I would have loved this 18-foot high surfer being my arty neighbor, when I was on the beach by the Surf Camp. The Spirit is especially dramatic late in the early evening when it is back lit by the setting sun, making for a beautiful silhouette. The Spirit of Imperial Beach statue honors Imperial Beach's surf culture and was installed in 2008. Funding for the $150,000 sculpture came from the San Diego Port District's public art program. The sculpture shows a 7-foot surfer toting a long board and also includes two children building a sand castle. This is, of course, a homage to the city's popular Sand Castle Days event each summer. A. Wasil, a resident of Coronado who taught art at San Diego State University and San Diego City College was the artist who created the cast bronze. I give "The Spirit of Imperial Beach" statue 5 YELP STARS for it's design and spirit meant to honor the birthplace of surfing and the lifeguards who protect and serve.

Coronado Avenue turns into Imperial Beach Boulevard at 14th Street. If you turn right onto Seacoast Drive and glance toward the structures, the red poles will display the letter "A" "R" "T" and if you look at the collection from different areas, the 3 red poles will look like extended banners fluttering in the wind. It's a very interesting landmark gracing Imperial Beach. There are two benches on either side of the sculpture where you are welcome to sit and gaze out into the oceans to watch the waves roll in and tides dance about along the beach. I love this artistic landscape beautifying the entrance onto the beach from Imperial Beach Boulevard which literally punctuates this place as exactly what it is... ART! Come and check it out!

There are three screens; playing different movies and plenty of parking spots. They are open Friday to Sunday for the drive in movies. They also occupy this space for swampmeet on certain days. Pro: lots of parking spots, bathroom for use, snack bar (cash only); friendly staff. Con: depends on the day and movie; it can get super packed, the entrance to purchase tickets can get long and extend to the streets; can be dangerous if no one pays attention. Bathroom is outdated, sometimes no hand soap or they run out of bathroom tissues or napkins. Other than that; such a great deal for new movie releases and in the comfort of your car. You can bring snacks, food etc; I always bring a pillow and blanked for extra comfort. Make sure to bring a radio if you don't want your car battery to die. I got one from Amazon for $20; such a great bargain and great system.

I can actually find a seat at the bar or just lounge in the back area on a couch. There are also tables and chairs to choose from. There has been a DJ, live band, karaoke or just plain music jammin. The highlight for me: the bar tenders ! They were attentive and friendly. Shout out to Justin and I forgot young looking female bartender's name. Shout out to her too This bar may not be as lit and inviting looking from the outside, don't judge. One ship was away on a sail in the afternoon this past Saturday, but there was more than enough to explore on the various vessels during our visit. Plenty to see and experience on each of the boats. We stepped onto the swift boat where staff educated us about its machine gun. And we walked through and checked out the different sections of the USS Dolphin submarine too. The HMS Surprise was a lovely ship with plenty of references to its use in films. The Star of India was like a museum all on its own, so many areas to explore and a ton of history to learn. The Californian was pretty basic, not very different from many other ships we've visited in the past. Steam Ferry Berkeley was the largest, with displays showcasing scientific instruments, model boats, artwork, the riverboats in Vietnam, the engine room, a torpedo caught by a fisherman, and a special exhibit featuring the "histories of the black pacific". There's a gift shop on site as well. Altogether, the variety of ships at the Maritime Museum made for an interesting adventure, a bit touristy, but worth the cost if you're into history or simply like boats.

The ticket also got you access to the other ships to walk around which was cool. But the coolest part was that San Salvador was sailed like they would have sailed it waaay back when. We got to see real rigging masts sails steering all being done by a crew and it was a totally amazing experience and such a perfect day. Bonus: we saw dolphins and it was a perfect day. Drawback: the gentlemen speaking throughout didn't talk into his mic often so missed a lot but oh well - who's really going for history?! such a good time!!. 2. I had a good with my tickets and called and tried to talk to folks in person and could never get someone. The tickets were cancelled but not refunded which was a bummer and staff in the kiosk even said they phone lines were messed up. A bummer. :(

No one ever mentioned a deposit was required, so I assumed my reservation was confirmed. When I arrived, I was told they didn't have my gondola reserved. It was extremely upsetting and honestly ruined my birthday celebration. What made it more frustrating was that it made me feel like it was my fault for not paying a deposit, even though I was never asked to provide one. Unfortunately, there weren't any real solutions offered at the time, and my friends had work schedules, so we couldn't simply reschedule. It was a very disappointing experience. I hope to return in the future and have the experience I originally planned, but I do hope there is clearer communication moving forward so others don't experience the same issue.

Even though it was a slightly hazy day we were able to see downtown SD and a lot of other cool landmarks that were all pointed out to us by Ian. I was really grateful that Ian showed us all the safety checks that he does prior to a fight that was very reassuring.
