What is not to love about the world's largest pipe organ! When I first moved to San Diego and passed by, I remember thinking it was quite striking. I also remembered thinking that I would love to get married there someday. Fast forward to 2012, and I did get married there. It is one of the most original backdrops that you can have for wedding pictures. Also, it is probably one of the least expensive venues, as it qualifies as a public park. Since that day in 2012, I have enjoyed the Organ Pavillon many more times. First, it is illuminated at night ,and it is always beautiful, even if there are no events taking place. Next, I absolutely love the tree lighting, Christmas carols, and other festivities there during the December Nights events. Further, they host twilight concerts during the summer, during which all sorts of bands play a variety of music at the pavilion. Also, there are often free organ concerts on Sundays. Most recently, we went for a guest organist concert which was taking place every Monday night. On that particular night, an organist played French music in honor of Bastille Day. We enjoyed the evening with our dog and a small picnic. If you are interested, you can check out a calendar of events and enjoy an evening at the park. read more

As you can see from my photos, the organ was tucked in safe behind its steel roll-up security doors when I came here with my parents. Despite not being able to see the organ itself, we really enjoyed seeing the concert space. Yes, the weirdly and ornately ugly building itself, but also all the permanent bench seating. You have to come on a Sunday to enjoy a concert here, apparently, which means I'll likely never enjoy a concert here, because Sunday is probably the least likely day of the week I would visit San Diego, for reasons and visions still unknown and/or indecipherable. Now, if I was actually staying at a hotel or rental in San Diego . . . . It's nice to pay a long quick visit here on your way to the Japanese Friendship Garden nearby. read more

Super time at today's free organ concert. May the 4th - May the Fourth Be With you! There was a guest conductor from a local church who did a whole planetary-themed program, from two Star Wars suites by John Williams, to music from Star Trek, 2001: A Space Odyssey & others. She was incredibly enthusiastic and gave us great explanations, and the vibe was chill. The free Sunday concerts at the organ pavilion are one of SD's best kept secrets, and much too good to waste on tourists! If you like it, please donate at the end too, to keep the tradition alive! It's beautiful here even when it rains and a lovely way to spend an afternoon in community with other San Diegans and visitors, listening to beautiful music! read more

The largest outdoor pipe organ in the world is quite remarkable. But what was even more impressive this past weekend were the performers during Balboa Park's free weekly concert (which happens on Sunday afternoons). San Diego Civic's Raúl Prieto Ramírez was amazing on the organ, even playing the instrument using his feet, performing difficult pieces too. And since it was trumpet day, Jonah Levy, a musician for the San Diego Symphony, did his thing on multiple types of trumpets, the duo putting on a great show for the audience. The umbrella rentals for $5 were worth the cost, shielding us from the hot rays of the sun while allowing us ideal seats in the center where the sounds of the magnificent organ project best. The hour-long performance we attended was such a treat, and the Spreckels Organ Pavilion is a lovely site that has the capacity to hold a massive amount of spectators to enjoy performances like such as well. Just not a lot of shade, hence the aforementioned umbrella rentals being ideal for certain weather conditions. read more

One of the mostorical pieces that you can visit is the Organ Pavilion that has certain days that you can come and listen to the performances . There are food places that are near by when I visit the park for a walk about they have food carts that with the sit down restaurants which has a great happyhour. The many times that I've gone to the concerts you could get seats that you could catch the performances they would the recitals and the week end music performances . The pavilion performances they have such great sound you could bring a blanket or have a lunch at the bench seats . One of the greatest events that will be returning to the Organ Pavillion with Christmas at Balboa Park . With the many workers of the event there will be many things that you could do and see with the many performers that will be performing at the Organ Pavillion. One thing that you can say is the Organ Pavillion is one of the oldest for the organ area gives you the wide view of the park that lead down Broadway of the walk to the fountain . With the many museums that you have choice near the Organ Pavillion there is many places that you can look at which are the nature walks to patio gardens . This is a beautiful, huge area where there are sometimes concerts/performances. There is a massive organ here, but not for the public to play, and more times than not, completely locked and out of public view. I've seen many people take quinceañera photos or graduation photos here, because the building structures are beautiful. It is free to come and take pictures, but im not sure if events or concerts here are free..that i recommend looking up. read more

I like to come on the off days when there isn't a performance, because I can listen to the players practice and there isn't a big crowd. Granted during the performance it's absolutely worth it, just come early to find good parking and seating. Speaking of, parking is always a battle! My tip is to watch for people walking to the lot and just following them The fact that performances are free is an absolute gem, and lovely that it's been in service for longer than a century! I just wish that it was taken better care of with my tax dollars. There are graffiti coverings visible and chips and cracks in the cement and detailing. All in all, a performance is well worth it for the music, the reverberation is absolutely insane (how do the players not go deaf)?? read more

I have been to Balboa Park 25+ times and walked by here half the time. I have never been to a concert or real music event here, but 1 time someone was practicing and I actually got to hear the organ playing and it was pretty amazing. I did got to the Diwali festival here in October 2019, the organ was not in use but this area is great for events like that. I also see many photo shoots going on in and around this area. It is a great location, part of the best park in San Diego, and there is plenty of free parking all around this area and in the park. It is not too far of a walk from the organ pavilion to any of the other main spots in the park. It is very close to the Balboa Park Japanese Friendship Garden which is also another good spot to check out if you are coming to the park. read more

Nothing like hearing the impressive skills of an organist jamming on a giant set of pipes in the middle of the park. This week featured a great trumpet player. I can imagine playing that organ so loud the trees would shake. If heat gives you bad music vibes, there are colorful umbrellas for rent by the stage. $5. They're patio umbrellas and you'll have to figure how to look cool holding it. Awesome possum of a time for music lovers. read more

While walking and going through the museums in Balboa Park we could hear the organ. Spreckels Pavilion is beautiful. The permanent seating area is large as the public gets free performances. Today the organist was practicing. He would stop and start, and play a section of a song over. It was nice having a seat and relaxing after walking for a while. read more

I have been coming here for their summer concerts, where they invite organists from around the world, to pay about 12 concerts, even Monday night, 7:30 pm - 9 pm each summer. I have invited neighbors to go get pizza at Bronx Pizza and eat it during the concert. Bronx Pizza is rated the best pizza in all of San Diego. Now those neighbors have passed away, and I have all those memories. I myself am a child piano prodigy (I am age 73 as I type this) and played on the Regis Philbin show when I was about in 6th grade. I love Bach ! I know every piece that Bach composed for the organ, by heart. I come to the summer concerts for anything Baroque. read more

The Spreckels Organ Pavillion is splendid, five stars or better. The 2 PM Sunday afternoon concerts are outstanding, except for . . . THOSE CURSED UMBRELLAS ! I guess the Park & Rec Department is hard up for ready cash, since it has allowed an umbrella vendor at the organ pavillion. The thing is, those beach umbrellas restrict the view of the organist from just about any conceivable angle. An attendee is basically at a huge outdoor radio event, if the organist cannot be seen playing. Sure, there are those who disdain hats or long sleeve shirts, and/or are too lazy to apply sunblock. Yes, they will benefit from the shade a beach umbrella provides. How about SITTING IN THE BACK ROWS so you don't block the view of those who actually want to see the organist performing? Or how about a section just for umbrellas? Get your act together , Park & Rec ! read more

I think if I had started out here it would have been pretty cool but since I made a couple of other stops before I came to the pavilion. Since there was no concert or anything or even someone practicing so it was pretty quiet and sparse. I'm sure that when it's active it's a different experience but when it's just a bunch of people aimlessly wandering around and reading plaques it's ok. read more

Spreckels Organ Pavilion is a great way for me to celebrate my 600th Yelp review.  It is one of my favorite places..  This open-air venue, located in the heart of Balboa Park, is absolutely outstanding for attending an event or concert -- especially an organ concert on the Spreckels Organ here.  The Spreckels Organ is the world's largest pipe organ in a fully outdoor venue -- and I believe the oldest.  It and the Pavilion were a gift to the City of San Diego in 1914 and built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition.  Visiting the Spreckels Organ Pavilion is like walking back to pre-World War I San Diego.  It's also a great spot to enjoy a picnic lunch while visiting Balboa Park. read more

Seating on the metal benches can hold 2,500 people, but is first-come-first-gets since there are no tickets. It's always there... the actual organ is usually always closed, but if you're okay with hearing rehearsals, the organist usually plays with it, but all you can do is hear it. The pavilion does have random acts and for the most part it's pretty entertaining. Throughout the years I've noticed that's it's also a good spot for wedding, quinceañera, graduation photos. We especially like the Jazz/big band acts that play. I've read that it's the largest organ in the Western Hemisphere. So that's cool. I really like when rando's try to jump from the stage to the ground and bust their ass. That's always great. read more

A few poems were read as the organist played. Our mistake we should've paid the whopping two bucks to rent an umbrella as other's did, next time. After the performance we were allowed to enter the building to see behind the scenes, all the volunteers was friendly. This takes place each Sunday for one hour. read more

Who loves free concerts? Show up at 2pm on Sunday's and you'll be in for a special treat. By starting time, a sizable crowd had gathered to experience the largest outdoor organ in the world. What looks like a piano with many layers of keys is just the "control panel" for an entire building that is the instrument. The organist played everything from the Star Spangled Banner to Bohemia Rhapsody. The program for each week is different. One of the special segments this week for movie music - from The Sound of Music. Doe a deer, a female deer...did I tell you that The Sound of Music is my favorite musical of all time? I can watch it over and over again. I was up on my feet during The Sound of Music organ medley. At first, we sat in the sun but it got to be too much. We then moved to the shade and soon got cold again. In the end, we found that some of the best seats in the house were not actually seats but rather along the long curved hallways that lead to the main organ structure. At the end of the 1 hour concert, everyone was invited to go inside to see the pipes and other components. It was a fantastic experience and the perfect break to a long day of walking around in Balboa Park read more

This is a marvel of engineering and artistry. If you have a chance to see it behind the stage, you should take the opportunity to see it. It is a very complicated piece of machinery as you can see from the photos posted. I prefer to hear the organ in an enclosed space where the sound of the notes resonates in my chest but this is the only organ I know which is located in an open space. So take the opportunity to enjoy one outside the confines of a building. read more

I absolutely love attending the Sunday afternoon concerts at Sprekles Organ Pavillian. If there's one downside it's the parking situation. While I have to say there is plenty of parking, sometimes it's a bit of a hike to the organ pavillion. When I was younger this wasn't a problem. As I've aged I have mobility issues in which affect my balance and doc tells me not to hike. A blessing in disguise as now if I want to go to the concert many times I must hike in. A non issue to me as I love hiking and complications of Diabetes robbed me of that. I'm here to review the organ Pavillion not my health issues , so I'll get back to the matter at hand. In the last 4 Sundays I've seen 4 concerts. ALL were topnotch. I've enjoyed it so much that I'm going to become a member of thier organization. I honestly feel that if I attend regularly it's my duty to do so. I highly recommend you visit at least once. And while you're at it take in some of the other attractions in Balboa Park. It's a great way for a family to have a fun affordable afternoon. Don't take my word for it. Check it out with your family. Make an afternoon of it and pack a picnic, and enjoy all that the Pavillion has to offer as well as Balboa Park. read more

One of my favorite spots in balboa park especially during the holiday season when it's all lit up. The architecture is beautiful and I love the long walkway on each side, it's a beautiful backdrop for any picture. We watched a few performances during December Nights here at the organ pavilion. The first one was the Polynesian dance team. It was a great performance very colorful and beautiful. Took me back to my visit to Hawaii. Then later on in the night when it got dark we came back to listen to the choir. At this point you could really see the beauty of the huge Christmas tree all lit up and the different colored lights hitting the pavilion. I had no idea the tree opened up! It was such a surprise and a treat to see that for the first time. The best spot to be is sitting or standing is on the stairs. You have a way better view than sitting on the benches. Especially if you are short like myself, since most people end up standing and block my view. I love this spot not matter what time of year it is, the holidays just add an extra touch of sparkle. read more

Located on one edge of Balboa Park, the Spreckels Organ Pavilion is the site of many weddings, photoshoots, and general hangouts. It's actually the world's largest pipe organ in a fully outdoor venue. Well, according to Wikipedia. There are free concerts every Sunday afternoon. I've caught a few, and they're quite magical. There are larger public events in the Pavilion, but you'd have to look these up online. I'll definitely have to incorporate this into my timeline of future trips to San Diego now that I don't live there anymore. Now the Organ Pavilion has lots of benches for you to sit and enjoy the music and bring plenty of snacks also during Christmas Season they have really cool lights here also .
