During our research before we left we saw a video talking about Bunsen. Just seeing the high quality of the ingredients made it one of our must try stops in Dublin. As we do when traveling, we start and end the day eating throughout the day. We popped into Bunsen to finally try the legendary burger around 4:30 pm. Because we were there at such an odd hour, we were the only people there. When you visit Ireland, the pub culture is real and most pubs start to get quite busy around 5:30 pm. Since Bunsen isn't a pub and wasn't located in a particularly touristy area , it didn't surprise me they were empty at that time of day. What stuck out the most at first was the super friendly service right from the door. We were sat at a small banquet of tables against the wall and checked out the menu from QR code link on the table. We were there for their original burger so that is what we ordered. No sides and water to drink. I couldn't be filling up too much yet. It was pretty early after all and we had a lot of places to stop yet. The menu isn't huge. They focus on doing one thing well and keep it at that. I like a restaurant that doesn't try to be everything. Our burger came out within 10 min and it was juicy, hot and fresh. Presented beautifully wrapped. We shared this one burger because, we knew we had lots of food to eat later. Immediately after eating the last bite I wanted to order another. It was really that good. Such perfection! This will be the burger I compare all others in Ireland to.

Ordered the fried chicken. Lunchbox 3 pieces. I guess, my choice or they like me?!! Anyway, ordered breast , thigh and wing. I didn't realize they Pressure FRY their chicken. The texture of the skin reminds me of Kentucky fried chicken. Very well seasoned. I'm ordering wings from now on as they're not the typical wings I'm familiar. Wing parts connected to big pieces of the back. The order overfills the box with chicken and Chips! All nice and hot and cooked to order. Reminder. CASH only! I'm a fan!

It is absolutely more than…read morelikely that I am displaying bias in my judgement in this instance, as Macari's is my local chipper, but they are damn good. And, to add credence to the statement above, Macari's was voted the best chipper in Dublin way back in '99 or 2000 (though this could have been Raheny people's irrational civic pride kicking in. For more info, see my review of Raheny). When I do go to Macari's, I unfailingly order a batter sausage and chips (just the chips if I'm trying to watch what I eat, rofl). The best thing about this order is that your batter sausage is guaranteed to be split down the middle, one hundred per cent of the time. Big name chippers like Leo Burdocks may like to think that they walk the walk, but do their batter sausages split down the middle, ensuring more surface area contact with the hot oil and thus increasing the square inchage of crispiness? They do in their arse. A little off topic, but isn't it strange how so many of the chippers in Dublin were opened by Italians? Look at all the Macari's, Luigi's, Forte's out there. You wonder why all these Italian immigrants decided to renounce their heritage, and instead of cooking magnificent pasta dishes in some restaurant at home, move to Ireland to sell fried crap to drunk people. There's a sociological study right there.

The pizza base was really nice, and the chips were hot and freshly cooked. I received my meal within 10 minutes of placing my order. Good service, good food, good price. Nice. There is a sit down option in the small diner-style restaurant, but the prices are higher, and if it's a nice day I would highly recommend taking your meal over to the Malahide Marina and soaking up some sunshine.

The waittress accepted and trasfered the order to the cook. After a few minutes, a friend of us joined us in the table. She ordered just a coke as she didn´t want to eat anything. The waitress replied they couldn´t carry on with our order because we hadn´t order a total that covered 9€ each. That non-sense rule made us to discuss about that and the cook just replied it was not a good business to sell 2 pizzas and a coke for 6 people, in a 9-seat table. We felt terrible as we behaved polite and we ordered a rationable amount of food taking into account the time it was (night) and the local was half empty. After arguing and realising there was no more explanation than exclusion by classism, we asked for the complaint form and the only answer we got was: we don´t have that. Anyway, we left really disappointed, being sure we will not repeat in there. For one of the guys in the group, it was the second time she suffered a discrimination like that because of the money you are supposed to spend as a customer in their business.
