Finding a hotel that strokes the fine line between these two divides is challenging. That's why I was so happy when I tried out Pension Natividad in Malate last weekend. While I heard good things about it, I was only able to appreciate it when I first stepped in. The place has an old-world energy to it, it was clean and pleasant, and they had the most wonderful covered canopy where I would see guests hang out all day. Considering that Malate is as noisy as they get, Pension Natividad was wonderfully quiet and serene. I can imagine myself hanging out there all day, finishing a book or writing one. Pension Natividad has a quaint cafe that serves a decent breakfast and some sandwiches. There used to be a pizzeria in here, but it has been closed down. That's a shame, as this would be a lovely place to have a pizza in. I do hope they bring it back. The rooms are spartan and simple, and devoid of amenities. Then again, this is a Pension House, not a Hotel, and as such I was not looking for these amenities anyway. I stayed in their most expensive room, (Single room aircon), which cost P1,500. There are fan rooms and dorm types, for those who want to save a bit more money. The front desk people were as pleasant as possible, and they did have a nice selection of supplies and food you could buy from them directly, at non-inflated prices. Their location is also ideal if you want to jump into the thick of things at Malate, or if you want to go to Manila's attractions. The baywalk is a short walk away, Intramuros and Luneta are pretty close by, and between all that, there are places waiting to be discovered in the streets and side streets. I finally found my Malate home, and it is Pension Natividad.

I'm not sure how the rooms are since we didn't stay there for the night (the place did seem very clean, and it gave off an old-world kind of atmosphere), but the restaurant at the ground floor was spectacular. It had a very homey vibe, red checkered tablecloth over small wooden tables and sunlight streaming through the large windows. The food was amazing, absolutely amazing, and at a decent price too! They serve a sort of noveau pizza, on a thin crust with a fistful of ricotta splattered onto the middle. It was heavenly. And only around P250. The coffee was great too - P30 for a huge, piping hot mug. They also have sandwiches and rice meals on the menu (although I don't know why you'd want to eat those when you can have their amazing pizza), and there's a fridge full of drinks and jars of pastries you can get from. I'm also a huge sucker for nice staff members, and the staff was so chirpy and polite, it was wonderful. When you visit I suggest you sit outside on the wrought-iron tables, the breeze from Manila bay passes through the vines hanging from the trees and everything is quiet save for the occasional car passing through the street. Manila has such extreme, obvious inequality that the neighborhoods for wealthy locals and tourists are centered around gated communities and malls with metal detectors. The more protected and catered to and pampered I was, the worse I kind of felt on an existential level. That said, I can't complain about the amenities within the Fort. The Shangri-La was the consummate luxury hotel, decked out in white and gold and marble, with a great staff offering top-tier service at every turn. I had a lovely room on a high floor, with a comfortable king bed and lounge furniture, and a rarefied view of Manila. The bathroom was clean and pretty, and housekeeping was excellent. The air conditioning was a little aggressive, and I found the room super cold when I walked in, but I guess that's how they keep the humidity under control. When I turned down the AC, the whole room got kind of damp. I got a massage at the hotel spa and visited a few of the bars and restaurants, quality establishments across the board. I heard from friends that the gym was outstanding, but I wasn't curious enough to go exercise. There was no casino, apparently setting this hotel apart from the others in its tier. I had a cushy, frictionless stay at the Shangri-La, my every need abundantly met. I am, in fact, a coddled tourist who did not even pay for this trip, and for better or worse, the accommodations made me feel this in my bones. If you're looking for a grand, lavish hotel in Manila, it'd be hard to beat the Shangri-La.

The hotel is quite some way from the main road, Taft. It is in one of the narrower streets. Though the location is more quiet compared with the main road, it can get noisy, especially when tricycles pass by. There are some affordable restaurants nearby, though, and we went to one for dinner. As the name implies, there are indeed orange accents to the hotel design, though the color is generally white and earth tones, which make the hotel look nice. Our room had a high and comfy bed, and the earth tones made it look relaxing. I believe the orange accent in our room was a leather seat. The free breakfast that came with our room were Pinoy breakfast meals like tapsilog and they were ok. I think we got a good deal. I heard that they also sometimes have promos for P1,500 rooms.

The hotel is located next to a large mall. We got to the hotel at about 9pm and were ready to check in quickly and get a good night of sleep. There was nobody waiting at the check in desk, but the process was extremely slow-- I am not sure if it was the front desk computer or the key system. After some time, our keys were finally ready and we were escorted to our room. The room was nicely appointed, although the room felt tight. We did have an amazing view of the water, unfortunately the view was skewed due to the construction going-- unfortunately the construction will be going on for a while. We were also disappointed with the finishings in the room, they seemed a bit outdated and worn. Given this is a Conrad hotel, we expected the quality of the room to be higher. Also, the room did not have a bathtub. The room did have a nice size shower that was a bit complicated. Despite the room being small and outdated, the bed was excellent. The bed was extremely comfy with nice fluffy blankets. The hotel does have a nice pool. The pool is very clean. We were at the hotel off season-July, so the pool was not too crowded. The pool is small so I could imagine the pool be super busy and perhaps a lack of chairs during busy times. The hotel also has a nice gym on the first floor. The gym is appointed with a good amount of equipment. The equipment is nicely spaced to provide room to move around. As diamond members we were offered breakfast in the lounge or in the restaurant. The restaurant has a large buffet for breakfast, so we elected to eat there-- best to go super early before the restaurant gets busy. During prime time, you may have to wait for a seat. We were fortunate to grab a seat with a view. The restaurant offering were wonderful. As diamond members we were offered a special menu. The special menu offered special drinks and food items. All of this is included in a menu. The buffet was nice, but the service could be better- drink orders took a while. Plus, tables around us were not cleaned readily. We did not like having our breakfast and looking at dirty dishes. On the executive floor, there is also a small executive lounge that is offered to gold and diamond members. They offer breakfast, snacks and happy hour. Lastly, the hotel offers good security. When you arrive, they check your car. Plus, you have to go through additional security when you walk into the lounge.

We're currently celebrating our 7yr anniversary and started talking about how great this hotel was again and I realized I never left a review. This place was super clean and everyone was very nice. The location was amazing and easy to walk to places. The breakfast was literally the best breakfast experience we've ever had at a hotel, I hope it's the same as it was back then. Use Grab to get a car lift and it costs about 250 php to get to Divisoria area. The pool and gym are on the 3rd floor, also on the same floor as the checkin Reception. Each entrance to the hotel and casino next door, secured with securities to ensure each guest's safety. Every bag and item must be xray scanned with each entry into the hotel. Complimentary International Breakfast with every stay in their dining room on the 3rd floor. I highly recommend staying at this modern hotel, also the fact that it is close to the airport proximity minimizing any traffic time with a flight departure.

Plus, as a diamond member I typically stay at Hilton hotels. As a diamond member we were provided access to the executive lounge which was useful while we waited for our room to be ready and after check out. Plus provides an opportunity to bypass the normal check in, which is great during busy times. The lounge is offered to gold star members and above. I would have rated this hotel a 5 star experience but had some hipcups. First of all- we requested in advance early check in. When we arrive several hours ahead of check in- we noticed they could not accommodate this request immediately. They said the room would be ready shortly, so we waited. We assumed that they would prioritize our room in preparation and be ready within an hour. After waiting an extensive amount of time, we learned that the wait would be several hours. We felt mislead and frustrated. We could of spent this time doing something in manila rather than waiting in the lounge. When it came time to check out- we asked for a late check out due to our flight departure time-- We learned that they could not accommodate this even though I was a diamond member-- As a diamond member they typically offer a 2pm check out. Given that the hotel was not sold out that day, I believe they could of provided this to us. Lastly, I had to request an upgrade- normally Hilton offers me an upgrade due to my status. Beyond my customer experience- the lounge was not well managed. The lounge was very loud-- kids screaming. Large families coming in-- usually lounge is limited to how many per a room/reservation can come in. Guest were on their phone and their ipads-extemely loud. I find this funny, as when I checked in the desk told me about what clothes are acceptable for the lounge but noise level is acceptable???? Due to these poor customer service experiences, I downgraded the number of stars provided to this hotel. Customer service is everything- be up front with your guest. On the positive side- The room was very clean and nicely appointed. The waitress in the lounge went out of her way to provide me fresh orange juice when it was not fresh juice squeeze day. It's pretty much your own little rented place for solitude. For around 50usd to 70usd, depending on the type of deal you get. You get a room with a very nice view. I guess this is what you pay for when you rent a room here. Oh, and wifi, and pool access, plus access to the fitness center. The bay view or the city view, from that high up is very nice, wherever you look at it. There's elevators with attendants during the day. At night they go home to their family. The rooms have a bed in it, depending if you like two full beds or a king. It's airconditioned, comes with a flat screen tv as well. There's a bathroom, there's hot and cold water. It's a small tank heater, but it's enough for a decent shower. You just can't stay in too long, doesn't bother me. then there's a toilet, it flushes. They even give you amenities for the bathroom. I've been here before they did a bit of a facelift. It looks like the same room, but with a fresh coat of paint. There's airconditioning everywhere now, I don't know if that's because there was the law graduates bar examinees staying there or because it's a sign of re-establishing their mojo. Anyways, I liked it, and thank you for the hospitality.
