Now open at new venue located a few doors away from old location doesn't have quite the charm of the old place. Food is still good.

This is just a really down to earth chilled cafe run by locals, with kids whizzing past; on scooters and skateboards. I like the bohemian style furniture out front, and the funky vibe of Kiwi music that pumps out of the speakers to set the tone. I really do enjoy the freshness of the battered fish, the crisp crunch of every chip and the delicious deep fried onion rings and squid rings. If it's not a fish and chip day for you, they have a variety of yummy burgers to mull over- you pay for what you get, it's more than enough, and there is so many different flavours to choose from too. One thing they could work on would be maybe a restroom, as one must walk down the road to the public toilets if they need to, and possibly making the prices not so steep. They have outdoor seating, as well which is needed as they are a popular spot.

After a long wait, Leigh finally has a fish and chip shop again and it is fantastic. In addition to…read morethe usual fish and chips fare they also have great coffee and a tasty selection of pastries. So far I have tried the fish and chips and cheese burger. Both were great and the burger was surprisingly satisfying. I added a potato fritter (homemade) to my burger and it really hit the spot. I've heard good things about their roast rolls so they are next on my list to try. Even if you're not feeling fish and chips, Leigh Eats offers a great selection of alternatives.

Yes well this just happened to me two nights ago when we decided to stop in Wellsford on our way up north, and I got LJ's Seafood. After waiting a ridiculously long amount of time, I ordered my hoki and egg burger, fries and a Coke. The only thing good about my meal was the Coke, because someone else made and bottled it. After insisting I needed a bag because I'm on crutches and carrying a tray would prove difficult, the dirty looking kid getting my food sighed and shoved my stuff in a bag. I open my little container ready to tuck into a sweet fish burger, but instead half of it had fallen out, it was sloppy and falling apart, there was way too much tartare sauce so it was soggy... I couldn't actually eat it, it was that bad. The chips were overcooked. Worst. Meal. Ever. And it was expensive, something like $14 for a combo. Gross.

We decided to settle for Matakana Market Kitchen. They have indoor seating that gets a lot of light from the floor to ceiling windows that face towards a nice scenic little ravine in the back. You can also choose to bask in the sunshine at one of the tables on the outside patio. The menu is quite large and a mix & match of a lot of different types of dishes to satisfy from toasty, fruity, hearty, brunchy, or classic style. The service was good and the place wasn't too busy at around noontime so we were able to enjoy a bit of piece and quiet. We settled for the chorizo & spud crush from the something brunchy section while my YEA opted for the pappardelle al pomodoro from the hearty side. The green goddess smoothie was quite refreshing after drinking some sea water during the morning snorkelling session. Both dishes came quickly and they tasted as described. It didn't blow me away but it was done with skill and care. The potatoes were nice and crunchy and eggs poached so that they were runny. The pasta dish was satisfactory and the pappardelle was a ok el dente. The ragu sauce was good enough. We left with full tummies and more energy in the tank for the rest of day so mission accomplished.
