We had been attend mass at a College and had gotten away from the traditional old stuffy parishes. The first two Sundays, we went to churches in Bothell and Kirkland. The third Sunday in town, my wife was sick and I went off by myself to St. John Vianney, which was using the old St. Thomas Seminary on Finn Hill, between Kenmore and Juanita. (Now the home of Bastyr University.) The congregation was actually friendly! What a change! This felt like mass at the college chapel. We found out later that a lot of this was due to the pastor who had taught at the seminary and had been raised protestant. The friendliness of the congregation continues today, although the location has changed. And several pastors have come and gone, but we are still the same parish family as some 20+ years ago, with many new additions, of course. We are in a fairly new facility, still on Finn Hill. We have a wonderful choir. (OK, I am biased - I have been singing with the adult choir since my now grown kids were in elementary school.) And we have some fantastically talented cantors (one of whom is a fellow yelper), as well as a great choir conductor and extremely talented choir director. It is worth coming here at 8:30 on Sunday mornings just to hear the choir.

Was in the neighbourhood and dropped in for their weekly Saturday night Vespers and "Tabesha"…read moreservice. The church members are relatively few but incredibly hospitable and welcoming. Within minutes you feel like you're already part of the family! There is a warmth about the space. The imposing iconostasis and the sword-wielding St. George on the immense curtain does nothing to intimidate one from sitting in one of the front pews. The space is a good mix of tradition and modernity - clean lines on the walls and a sharp projector screen as a worship aid, despite the beautiful icon and not-mistaking-it-for-not-being-a-church layout. The music is uniquely Coptic. For a Roman with some familiarity with the East, this was still a unique experience and I really enjoyed it. Joining in with the singing during Tabesha comes natural and it's very much okay to not be perfect. I'm also very impressed with the involvement of the little kids in the prayer services. I'd love to see more visitors come for the Saturday night service just as many visitors attend St. Mark's for their Sunday compline. The room is there and the soul yearns for it. Afterwards, there is freshly baked bread in the basement with a cool stamp on it. I hope to be back and encourage all Christians and people of good will to discover this gem of Kirkland.

What can I say? For me, it's home…read more Newly built church brings the ancient Coptic architecture into modern design and blends grandeur with grace. The people and pews are warm and inviting. Recently added Coptic icons decorate front wall and the addition of a dome painting above the main altar bring the worshipers a step closer to heaven. I'd like to see more icons on the walls as they are still bare. Downstairs is the main hall with full commercial kitchen which caters simple meals after the Sunday service. There are enough classrooms downstairs for all services and the entire structure is roomy.

When Kevin came to our branch for a book signing event, we were so exited to get a chance to meet him and talked about how appreciate we felt about the service. We were told we couldn't join the line coz we don't have a book. I bought the book but left at home. We explained that we just want to have a quick chat with him. Guess what? We were not allowed. What??? We can't talk to our pastor??? In which church you can't talk to your pastor? Sorry we can't join a church with no real community in mind. Very disappointing...
