It's the weekend before Christmas and the holidays are in full roar. Mistletoe, cozy fires, ugly…read moresweater parties, Egg Nog and Christmas cheer, it's been an incredible ramp up to the big day. This morning I took my dog out for a quick walk. We live near the Rosehill church, so often walk along their street front. I've been a neighbor of this church for six years, so the way I was greeted by members of the congregation was disappointing, to say the least. As one member of the church was pulling up, he rolled down his window and accused me of leaving dog poop on their lawn. I said 'No, I clean it up every time' and pulled a roll of doggy bags to show my intent. I'm not sure if he was familiar with the concept of doggy bags, as he continued to accuse me of either leaving dog poop or intending to leave dog poop on their lawn (this part of the interaction was unclear). He drove off in a huff. Then two younger members of the congregation were sent out to investigate the patch of lawn I'd been on. After surveying the lawn for dog poop, they came over and questioned me. What's sad about this is how far they've gotten from connection to their neighbors and community. If they were really present in the community, they'd see us walking our dogs past the church every day. They'd also see us cleaning up after our dogs every day. And sometimes, they'd even see us cleaning up after other dogs. When your first reaction to someone walking past your church is to accuse them of wrongdoing, you've lost all contact with Christian hospitality.
