Not great, but not bad either. They tend to be the less "in your face" version of Seattle life. When I first got to Seattle, I tended to use this paper to navigate around easier and figure out what events were going on. Less ads and a bit less junk to wade through to get to the point. And it was a fairly good resource to start living downtown. However, after living in Seattle for a little bit, you will notice that this paper tends to miss a lot of events. Especially if your taste is not mainstream. And the "safe" writing tends to get bland after awhile. So I still check out their listings for events and news online. But find that it's better to compare it with "The Stranger" to get all the information. read more

Not much to elaborate on if you already read my review on The Stranger. I was looking for an equivalent to Denver's Westword. A while back I started re-reading the Weekly occasionally to read the restaurant reviews. Then I stopped after I read a review that went on and and on about Zoka bars. If you've had one you know they're basically giant magic bars (sweetened condensed milk, coconut, choc chips, nuts, graham cracker crumbs, butter). That's the Weekly: stuck in about 1980. And talking about it as if they just discovered something really great. read more

I can't believe I've not Yelped The Seattle Weekly. Whenever I need to find out what music is playing, or what cool new independent movie there is to see, I consult the Weekly. This weekly is the better of the two major weekly newsies out there in Seattle. Its political view points are a bit more intelligently written tha in the other one and the articles on other subjects are also pretty well written. The classifieds are amusing, the pictures pretty well done, and the ads are helpful. Its another basic weekly but its a bit better than the others... and also the ads for local businesses are pretty tastefull as far as that can go when advertising is concerned. I've had occaision to have to call them once or twice for adverts and never been let down by their friendly staff who always check and double check their work against what you want/need. read more

For all my complaining about The Stranger, I don't have much good to say about its competition. Also free, and less angsty, it is nonetheless boring. Some good political writing and features make up for the general blandness. I think the Tom Tomorrow cartoon is really the highlight for me. I now get the random daily stuff from SW via twitter feed, and I really am enjoying SW now. They have funny non-stories with smart writers. And they have a great non-groupie approach to local music scene. I rarely to never have a physical copy of the weekly, but the online stuff is hot. I misjudged you Seattle Weekly. I cannot be the only one who loved Seattle Weekly's Game of Drones cover last week. The actual story by Rick Anderson was equally phenomenal. Rick's comprehensive piece illuminated Washington State's growing billion dollar drone industry and the accompanying ethical concerns. read more

The first rule of journalism is to write at an eighth grade level. The Seattle Weekly won't insult your intelligence level like that. In fact, they go into enough depth that I know exactly what to do if the avian flu pandemic ever hits. I'll quit my job and stay at home wearing a mask. Now that's good reporting. read more

I, too, used to be a faithful Weekly reader. Now I don't even bother picking it up. Especially bad is what has been passing as "food writing," dining out being of particular interest to me. It's difficult to wade through Hanna Raskin's horrible writing to get at what is ultimately just another mean, protracted and holier-than-thou Yelp review that somehow made it onto the pages of a weekly newspaper. The way she shits all over small businesses (restaurants) that are part of our community is reprehensible. But what does she care? She's not from here, hides her identity and probably has no intention of sticking around (if we're lucky). Real food critics know what they're talking about beyond what they Google. Most importantly, they WANT to be on the side of the restaurant. She just wants people to think she knows what she's talking about. Here's hoping that someday the quality of the food writing in this city will rise to meet the quality of the food.... read more
