In fact, if you've made your way back from the other side of Kings Heath on a Sunday morning by walking through the park and you feel disheveled you could pop in here to spruce up your Barnet Fair on the way to The Hare & Hounds for a sharpener. (Only a cad uses the phrase 'Hair of the dog'...). As well as being open between 10am and 2pm on a Sunday, the shop is also open until 7pm on Thursdays. Which is good to know if you need a last minute cut to look your best for late night shopping.

I think one of my reasons for disliking hairdressers so much is because when I was at University I grew dreadlocks. After a year of not washing my hair I decided to go to have the dreads cut off. When I got there the hairdresser was shocked at the state of my hair and made a really big deal out of it. At the end of the cut he charged me an extra 20 quid and told me to never come back again. I've had several hairstyles since. Since then I've had many Jason Donovan cuts and Justin Bieber style do's; this has only sought to compound the issue. Fino changed everything for me and now I sport a nice short and relaxed style. This is all thanks to them. A men's haircut is very cheap at 10.50, but I always seem to give the barber a 5 pound tip because the hairstyles suit me so well. The owners are Polish nationals that speak better English than most people that were born in the UK. If you fancy a chat whilst you are having your hair done then fino will cater to your needs and will provide this additional service. If you dislike small talk like I do then this is also the place for you as the barber will also quite happily cut your hair in silence. Next time you need a quick cut try and forgo wearing a hat and instead spend 10.50 and an hour of your time getting a nice smart haircut. Fino are always happy to help you look smart.

With my mind put at ease by comments made by people I don't know, I strode into Fino full of confidence. I then strode straight back out after realizing you can not pay by card. With my pocket furnished with a fresh £20 note, in I strode once more. There were two barbers, one with hair and one without. I took a seat on one of the sofas as instructed by the barber with no hair. Whilst sitting, it dawned on me that there was no obvious queuing system. As a Brit, this upset me greatly. My angst was soon put at ease when it became apparent that the two barbers were using their mirrors, not only to admire their handy work, but also to spy on the clients and make sure everyone was served in order. Soon it was my turn, and the barber with hair summoned me to the chair. Refreshingly, there was no prolonged preamble about what I wanted. I was asked how I wanted it, how short and given a choice of scissors or clippers for the sides. There was a wonderful silence for the next 15 minutes as the barber skillfully and neatly cut my hair. He did not want to know where I work or where I've been on holiday just as much as I did not want to know how long he's been cutting hair. Some people like the chatting and may miss it, but it suits me down to the ground. I have what the barber wants - money, and he has what I want - scissors and a steady hand. There's no need to pretend there's anything else to our 15 minute relationship. When the cut was complete, I duly paid my £11 and left satisfied. There is no glitz at Fino, but you get a good cut for a good price. I'll be going back, next time via the cash point first.

The only negative I need to mention is that there are no appointments. My advice is to wait it out, its only £12 for a trim and worth every penny. To top it all off this place is also bargain hunter friendly! For every 6/7 cuts you have you get one half price. Be sure to pick up a loyalty card and take full advantage.

Banter is fine, easy going. I have to say my haircut is likely as simple as it gets. Basically short sides and back and a number 2 on top. Hard to get wrong. But he always did a neat job with no messing around. You mileage may vary if you have some complicated cut. He'd probably handle it fine; I just don't know. I'd say at £12 the price is fair given local prices for a decent man cut. I only stopped going when I moved job and so it became a bit of a trek. I might go back. I liked the bloke and good to support a local independent too. I'd recommend the place.

Hub offers a professional service with a friendly, chatty atmosphere. I've always been happy with the results, although the prices seem to vary erratically every time you go in. I've given up trying to guess how much my haircut will cost me now. While it's not as expensive as some salons, it's certainly not cheap. It can be busy depending on the time of day you go, but the staff are attentive and attend to you straight away.

I knew (because of the name and the blood on the sign) that this would never happen here. The new papers would have it too easy to report that someone's been hurt in Xteme Cutz 3 so i knew these guys would be good for it. "Cut throat Shaves" and "Haircutz" are on the menu here and oaps have special rates. The salon its self looks clean and has these great blue neon lights hitting all the walls giving the place a really new age feel. I asked for my hair to be shortened and thinned (it gets really fat and bushy) and normally hair dressers take this as a que to shave all my hair off and laugh at me as i have to pay for it, but the stylist here always let me know what he was doing and kept asking me how short it was going to be. Walked away happy, paid less than a tenner for the service. Not bad at all.

It is all bit boy-racer-meets-Sweeny Todd for my liking. The neon lighting puts me on edge as do the pictures of some of the styles on offer. Fancy a Nike tick shaved on your bonce? Head to Xtreme Cutz! It is like the nineties never left us. With it being a barbers, and me being a woman, I've not had a haircut there. But let's just say I'd be a bit worried if my husband booked himself in for a trim. Then again, they seem to be good at what they offer.

It's owned and staffed by Mary and Julian, who offer a friendly service along with a bit of banter whilst you sit and receive either a contemporary style or just go for the basic short back and sides. The clientele range from young to 'eligible free bus pass' with the general ambience of the surroundings contemporary, uncluttered and basic, reflected in the mid-market price for decent hair cut. Man mags (nothing dodgy...honest) and newspapers abound.

I guess everything in life has a balance. One thing about Menz I don't understand is how they balance their books by charging only 4 pounds for a men's hair cut. A men's haircut is 4 pounds, a child's is 3.50, a pensioners is 3.50 and they also offer threading of facial hair for 2.50. Now I'm not quite at the age where I have excess hair growing out of my facial orifices, but my eye brows can get a bit bushy from time to time. To avoid looking like the mono-brow racing hero Nigel Mansell, I came here to have my eyebrows threaded. The experience was quick and painless and they did a really good job. I didn't need a haircut, but noticed that other patrons were having well placed styles put upon their heads. At 4 pounds for a cut you can't go wrong on price. Don't expect a Vidal Sasson cut; just expect a nice clean haircut.
