The seating was very American, I was hoping for more traditional basket tables and stools...but never the less clean and bright location. We were the only patrons at the time so service was good and fast. We ordered a variety platter of meat and veggies. The food was amazing. The beef top had great flavor and the chicken was tinder. This is a nice family owned place, food always comes out hot and fresh but it certainly takes a while so cut out at least 90 minutes for your visit. We got the Meat Combo Plater which had 4 different dishes included, all very tasty (see photo for description)! But I was left wanting a little more spice/heat. The menu say this player would feed 2 but I have a smaller appetite so I think it could easily feed 3 or 4. I hate to write this review but the glowing reviews made us drive 20 minutes out of our way to try this place. Very much not worth it. The food is ok. We had a beef dish and a lamb dish. Both were so greasy it was difficult to wrangle. This was Made doubly difficult by the real problem. We were dining at 6pm on a Sunday evening. No one else was in the restaurant but for some reason we still had terrible service. We got 1 glass of water each, 1 bottled beverage and then were completely ignored. To the point we weren't given any silverware with our entrees. A spoon would have made things easier but really probably not that much better. Yes I know how to eat Ethiopian food and I understand the traditional presentation of serving the food on the bubble bread. Both of our dishes were served in bowls and the grease problem made it difficult to grasp with the bread. This was maybe my least favorite rendition of the bread I've had as well. It was very moist like very very moist and made the whole experience lack luster. It's clearly a family establishment and the kids are nice but they are not servers. All of this might have been ok but for what we got the food was also quite expensive. We've done Ethiopian many times and often seek it out when traveling. This place wasn't it. The restaurant it's self is ok if old and fairly dirty. But the neighborhood is a little off the beaten path. Exactly the hole in the wall kind of place where I'd the food is amazing and the service is great you could expect The kind of reviews we saw. The food is so delicious and the family that works here is very nice! The portions are very large and the spices are excellent. Our party of 2 shared a veggie platter for 2 and the Awaze Lamb Tibs. Both dishes were very flavorful and we ate until we rolled ourselves out. Service can be slow, we waited over 45 minutes after our order to get our food, and they forgot to bring us our beer we ordered. The food was amazing! I used to go to Fasika in St.Paul, but they closed down. If you are a Minnesota native, you know that was the go to spot. Selam was so good. Love this place. The owner is so welcoming and comes by to make sure you're enjoying everything. Here, you're encouraged to take your time with your meal. My teens loved the coffee ceremony. As a group of three, we had a combo platter and samosas. The samosas were so fresh and hot. The combo platter gave us the perfect amount of variety, with the beef tibs being a real favorite. This is my favorite restaurant in the twin cities. I come here every chance I get. For a while I lived nearby and it was a battle with myself to not come here every day. I usually get the meat combo platter, but I've gotten some other things and never been disappointed. I'm don't know if there are vegan options, but there are good vegetarian options and the whole restaurant is pork-free. The folks who run the place are also really kind and fun. Some friends and I stopped in Selam for a late lunch, never having had Ethiopian but excited to try something new! My bf and I split the veggie combo and the awaze lamb tibs and were very satisfied with our choices. The lamb had such a nice level of spice to it and was the perfect portion. The veggie combo was massive and the lentils were 100/10! Service was great too, with both the owner and chef stopping by a few times to see what we thought and if we were enjoying our meals. My wife and I ordered takeout from Selam last weekend. We miss Lucy's Ethiopian Market and were looking for another great Ethiopian restaurant nearby. (Others in South Minneapolis are great, too... but just not quite Lucy's). Selam was WONDERFUL. We ordered the Selam combo, which includes both meat dishes and veggie dishes. The owner(?) or primary person responsible when I called was super friendly, taking time to explain the menu to me and recommended a few specific dishes to include in the combo. She and her colleague were also super friendly and kind when I picked up our order. Most importantly, the food was amazing - certainly among the best Ethiopian meals I have ever had. I generally prefer the meat dishes, but also loved Selam's veggie options. My wife generally prefers the veggie dishes, but also loved the Selam's meat options. To please both of our picky tastes means the food was spot on. I hope this restaurant does really well - they deserve it. Try it! read more

We accidentally walked into Selam Restaurant. We were not recommended it by anyone, nor had we heard about it before. Having eaten at a large number of Ethiopian restaurants in the Twin Cities, this is by far the most authentic tasting Ethiopian cuisine I've had, besides my moms cooking. The pricing of the dishes is quite fair. We had the vegetarian combo with lentil sambusa, and this one plate could feed two to three people.
