I came to Dr. Shah for hip pain, am an older equestrian athlete, and had tried anti-inflammatories, chiropractic, and physical therapy. So thankful for Dr. Selina Shah and her expertise to do PRP injections. After 6 months, I was on the verge of needing surgery for debilitating pain from a plantar plate tear. From beginning to end, she helped to make sure the procedure was as pain-free as possible. It's been about 3 months since the injection and even though it'd be unrealistic to be 100% healed, I'm almost there as it allowed me to travel so much to even log in 25k steps in a day before starting to feel any hint of pain (that went away quickly). Dr. Shah was first enthusiastically recommended to me many years ago by a dancer friend of mine. In that community, she enjoys something of a legendary status, almost a cult following, as it seems every dancer has seen her for one reason or another. I do kickboxing and some basketball and I've been back to her many times for many reasons as I age and my body finds new ways to fall apart in those sports. Because she's in demand - and sometimes travels with different sports teams - it may take some time to get to see her. Dr. Shah is simply the best. It takes time to evaluate an issue thoroughly and each region takes time. I respect that about her. She doesn't rush and sometimes if you have had problems for a while, it takes a while to peel back the layers to really get to the heart of the problem. With 4 knee surgeries under my belt (3 scopes and an ACL rebuild), I wasn't surprised when both knees started giving me a lot of pain and weakness. There were already signs of arthritis in my 30s and time only exacerbated this despite a very active lifestyle (daily stretching and alternating between swimming, hiking, Zumba, weight lifting, Pilates, cycling). Dr. Shah is a thorough physician with a non-surgical primary focus. I had a very large calcium deposit in my shoulder, and rather than sending me to an orthopedic surgeon who likely would have immediately removed it, she provided me with treatment options. I chose to avoid surgery and see if the deposit would reabsorb into my body after a cortisone shot. Fortunately, at my follow-up visit a month later, the deposit had indeed reabsorbed. After being referred for surgery for bi-lateral carpal tunnel syndrome, and then consulting with my primary care MD, he suggested I see Dr. Shah for an evaluation and to discuss alternatives to surgery. Dr. Shah provided a very thorough exam and suggested trying steroid injections. Bi-lateral injections were completed in December '23, and at this time (mid-May '24) my L hand exhibits no signs of the carpal tunnel symptoms and my R hand exhibits few symptoms (estimate 85-90% normal in this hand). While seeing Dr. Shah for follow-up, I also began to experience "trigger finger" in my R thumb joint. This was also treated by injection and the condition has not returned 3 months post injection. Dr. Shah and her staff have been easy to work with. Dr. Shah attended a top tier school, Vanderbilt University, and is a team physician for USA Gymnastics, USA Figure Skating, USA Synchronized Swimming, and USA Weight-lifting. Thus, she is listed as a sports medicine MD as well. She also treats performers at the San Francisco Opera, Berkeley Repertory Theater, A.C.T., and Broadway, among other performing arts companies. She is a former dancer and gymnast who understands how the body moves and heals. During the initial consultation, which was exactly 30 minutes in duration, she took detailed notes and asked pointed questions in order to make an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Shah was able to immediately diagnose an issue that a previous MD had missed. Her expertise is evident during the exam. She is knowledgable, firm, and matter-of-fact. You should expect a 15 minute wait time once you are in the exam room while she concludes with other patients. Dr. Shah's front desk staff, Amy, is amazing! She is courteous and efficient and one of the best receptionists/assistants whom I have encountered in a medical office. Amy follows up right away regarding necessary testing, appointments, insurance verification, etc. and checks patients in and out swiftly and amicably. She literally spent 5 minutes with me of what should have been a 15 minute appointment and said she did not have time to have a conversation with me. As another patient described this doctor in a previous Yelp review, it was the "most bizarre appointment I have ever had". I felt the same way when I left her office that day. Most bizarre appointment that I've ever had. If you are not an athlete, she does not want to help. I had hoped she would have insight into all of the muscular imbalances that I'm dealing with. I used to be an athlete - but I'm out of commission for a while. If it's not a blatant "here is what's wrong" issue, she has zero interest in you as a patient. Her complex questionnaire intake doesn't allow for 'prioritization' of a given symptom or pain description. She fixated on one that wasn't the biggest issue I was dealing with. About three months ago, I fractured a metatarsal in my foot. After a frustrating period trying to get clear information from my regular health providers to no avail, a colleague of mine recommended Dr. Shah for another opinion. I've been going to see Doctor Shah for a few years. I went initially due to pain in my right shoulder. I had seen an orthopedic surgeon who gave me a cortisone shot which didn't last long at all. Doctor Shah uses ultra sound guided imagery for the correct cortisone placement. She also uses sterile technique in the cortisone injecrion which, surprisingly, the orthopedic surgeon did not. Doctor Shah used the tenex treatment on my shoulder about 10 weeks ago. I've had great results. It is a low pain procedure and I've gained return of almost full range of motion that I didn't have with the cortisone. I'm falling apart at the seams and my hip now needs some attention. So grateful that I was referred to Dr. Shah! I am a dancer with hyper-mobile shoulder blades. After seeing multiple different types of doctors for what I thought was a shoulder injury, Dr. Shah was the first person who was able to accurately diagnose what the actual issue was- a myofascial trigger point in my neck.
