But when I spotted "Korean spicy deepfry chicken" on the menu, I was shocked. Unfortunately it was nothing like the Korean-style deep-fried chicken that I'm used to. Normally it is made with drumsticks or wings, fried twice, and coated in a spicy-sweet sauce. This was strips of chicken breast (ie. the driest part of the bird) with quite a bit of batter, some salad thrown on top as an afterthought, and some sauce on the side which was not spicy at all. On its own, the chicken 'fries' were just ok, though I needed a lot more sauce since they were so dry. The other offerings looked authentic, and obviously I had to try the kimchi. The kimchi was excellent and its addition vastly improved the chicken! The the dish I tried only garnered 3 stars, the kimchi earns one extra. I would like to come back and try some of the other items.

The staff was awesome and even joked with us when we came back for seconds. The beef was super tender - marinated beef in soy sauce with ginger, garlic,onion. It served with a little salad on the same - mainly purple and white cabbage and good properly steamed rice. They also make really good homemade kimchi. Plus its all organic? Triple Win! Dont forget to add the typical homemade Korean Hot Sauce - its actually not really hot, more sweet unhot chili paste thats like a sauce and goes amazing with the beef and rice. Only 80 Kr for a good portion. Go, eat Bulgogi and get a side of kimchi. What a fool I am! In my Studieskolen days, I passed by this place many times but figured it was…read morelike most Japanese-Korean mix establishments: BAD! However I was pleasantly surprised and now I know where to get my Korean fix in Copenhagen when I'm feeling homesick. Since it was a very cold day, I wanted something hot and comforting. The Samgyetang menu (310 dkk) appealed to me especially since it comes with small sides (banchan). Normally this soup is eaten in the summer, but I think it also goes over well on these winter evenings. Our server brought out a whole cornish hen sizzling in the stone pot on a wooden trivet with salt and pepper on the side. Spot-on presentation! However there was no ginger or glutinous rice inside the chicken, much less jujube or ginseng. Although chicken is the star of this dish, the rice and herbs play a huge role. This was very disappointing, even though the meat was cooked perfectly and falling off the bone. Before we were served the main (Korean) dishes, we received a little Japanese appetizers. One was a spinach salad (ohitashi) and a shrimp salad with bean thread (ebi sunomono). These were very nice and refreshing but of course I would have preferred a Korean starter. Soon after came gyoza/mandu, which was good. Right before the mains came out we got the banchan, and so prettily arranged! There was seafood pancake (haemul pajeon), carrot kinpira, kimchi, potato pancake (gamjajeon), and seaweed salad. The kinpira was a bit out of place, I think beansprouts would have fit in better. Though they were a little oily, the pancakes were good. Now the kimchi was excellent! I can say this with confidence since I am Korean, I've been brought up eating kimchi, and I do make my own. You can even buy it by the kilo here. Good to know. At the end of the meal we got a scoop of sickly-sweet strawberry ice cream and a pretty but not very tasty strawberry for dessert. I would have preferred green tea ice cream or even some seasonal fruit, the latter being more common in Korean cuisine. Since it is winter I would have been ok with no dessert and just a cup of ginseng tea instead. Although the missing ingredients in the samgyetang made me feel cheated, the banchan was mostly good and so was the service. I look forward to trying more authentic Korean dishes here.

In Copenhagen for only 2 nights on business (having never been here before) and I'm a little…read moreashamed to even be reviewing Fu Hao. My intent was to avail myself of all of the local Scandinavian food specialties to immerse myself in the culture of it all. On night 2, I couldn't take another meal of under-seasoned fish or rye bread. So, I did a search for ABS food (Anything But Scandinavian) and Fu Hao popped up. Like moth to flame, my dinner fate was sealed. Within 1 block of the central train station, this will be within walking distance of anyone staying around city center. It is on a quiet side street and has a fascinating mix of old Euro cement architecture with pictures of their dim sum menu on the windows. Around the area is a Little Asia neighborhood sporting a mix of other restaurants such as Thai and Japanese along with several Asian grocery stores. There were numerous bike food delivery people in and out of the place picking up while I ordered take away so they do a brisk take away business but the place was also completely full with patrons, both apparent tourists and locals alike with several tables of local Chinese patrons represented. It was so busy that when I stepped in to order, a woman got up from a table, took my order and sent it to the kitchen and later told me she doesn't even work there but she was there for dinner and knows the shop operators so well that she jumps in to assist them when they are in the weeds. It is that kind of place. She took my order, told me some history (the restaurant has been there operating for over 30 years) and then sat back down to finish her meal. That was a pretty awesome interaction. There is a full bar set up squeezed in above the cash register with a prominent Carlsberg beer tap, the obligatory waving good luck cat toy, and small Danish flag on display but no bar seats. The inside is small and compact, perhaps with enough tables and seats for up to 50 people all in. The menu had a full selection of dim sum offerings including some things I was surprised by such as tripe as well as pretty standard offerings you would find in most Chinese restaurants. The latter is what I would expect. The former is what impressed me as I would not think that full scale dim sum would be a hit with the locals (maybe they get sick of under seasoned fish too) but it must be and kudos to Fu Hao for being able to offer it so far from the motherland. The food was tasty and comforting to me. The dim sum is quite serviceable and I read the negative comments from others related to use of MSG by the kitchen. My answer to that is that MSG (stands for "Makes Sh*t Good") is a traditional and basic seasoning used throughout Asia. So while some disapprove of it, without it there is a degree of inauthenticity and that is a little like saying you are an aficionado of Chinese food but don't eat rice. It's incongruent. I found the food here to be pretty authentic which says something from the middle of Scandinavia. Copenhagen has a lot going for it but, in my opinion, world class native cuisine may not be on that list. Thank goodness though that they have Fu Hao (and other places like it) to keep their dining scene international and interesting. Would I eat from here again? Of course.

Lots of Thai curries, fried spring rolls, dumplings, tempura, sushi, and more. The people that work here are fine enough, but they tend to talk to each other in Chinese and you don't know what is really going on (but I do ;) They are good about coming by and clearing your plates regularly as well. Their soft serve ice cream dessert station is pretty awesome. It's just vanilla in cups, but there's 4 different sauces and 6 different toppings. I made 2 sundaes! Yum I didn't get sick here, so that's a good thing, yeah? This place is always busy so I feel like they go through a lot of product quickly and as a result, it's likely anything ever goes bad... So at least you're safe on that front.
