My first time on the bjj mats..ever..

Family - Loyalty - Respect. These 3 words is the credo of Sergio Penha's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy and is a perfect description of what you'll experience here. My review is from the perspective of someone with no combat sport experience, who was curious but always somewhat intimidated to check out Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Sergio, his instructors and students are all very friendly, welcoming and very tough! I've seen many of his students at all levels roll/spar and everything is at a high level of skill and energy. BJJ is full contact and I'm constantly out of my comfort zone but I'm in a controlled environment with some great BJJ practitioners who help me get better. I get pushed to my physical capabilities and every class ends with a feeling of accomplishment. It's very addicting in many ways as you become stronger physically and mentally while learning BJJ. Sergio is an amazing teacher with decades of BJJ experience as one of only 21 8th degree Black Belts in the world. He breaks down Jiu Jitsu in a way someone with no experience (like myself) can pick up. Every move is with purpose and it's explained to you clearly how and WHY we're performing the moves as we learn and perform them. Additionally, every single person I've been paired up with takes his same approach teaching others. Everyone is there to get better and make others better as well. I've just started my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey and I'm very fortunate to come across Sergio's. Sergio is so personable, friendly and his leadership trickles down to his students throughout the academy. There's a great positive vibe and everyone there is ready to put in work and push each other. Whether you're the greenest beginner like myself, or someone who's been practicing BJJ for many years, you'll feel right at home at Sergio Penha's. Enjoy...! =)

So I'm bias, Sergio is not only a mentor he is a Master of Jiu Jitsu as well! I could stop at mentioning his 37 yrs as a black belt and the countless number of great Jiu Jitsu and MMA fighters he's molded or shown the true meaning of pressure! Sergio's school is no joke! Everyone greats you with a smile and everyone is welcomed as a member of the family. He is without a doubt royalty in the would of Jitz! Now he doesn't get as much press as the Graces do but don't underestimate his influence here in the US! I recall when I first joined, one day I counted 11 black belts present in class! All the guys from whiteto black are top notch! I can say I trained with most of the big names in Vegas, guess if you rolled all of them together maybe they would have Sergio's level of experience! If your in Vegas and your at the beginning your journey, or if you've been around the block come, by the Spring Mountain location you won't regret! If your already in town and sick of training with a guy with a giant ego, or a part time teacher and a full time fighter?! You owe it to learn from the root of modern Jiu Jitsu! Again I'm bias, and I currently live in NYC and train with another legend, in Marcello. They are really one in the same, very confident, humble and masters of the art of grappling warfare! Honor, respect, family!

Sim is…read morea 4th or 5th degree black belt and you won't know it because he doesn't wear his stripes on his belt. He's probably the most humble BJJ professor I've ever met. I've never heard him talk down to anyone and he talks to EVERYONE with respect and kindness. He also still competes and wins! He has a group of competitors that smashes the competition and still so humble. The atmosphere when you step into the school/gym is chill vibes. You don't have to wear certain color gi's or the school gi. The team is awesome also, everyone is cool and chill. No one's trying to prove themselves and hurting other teammates. They're also great teammates by helping and giving advice. To me, I feel more like a family member than just another number coming in the doors. I have random conversations with Sim and it's not always about jiu jitsu. He cares about everyone and everyone's growth. There's a good amount of classes and several different times of day so more people can train accordingly to their busy schedules, Gi and no Gi. Ive met so many amazing people here from law enforcement to doctors, nurses, and other professionals of all ages and backgrounds. It's close to the 215 and rainbow so quick access to the freeway. There's a clean restroom and also clean showers! A lot of people come in their lunch break and then shower before they go back to work, super convenient! I definitely recommend this school/gym to everyone young and old, male or female, and they have a great kids class also! The price of membership is also less than majority of the schools in Vegas and not as good. Try a class and then sign up for 6 months (best deal & free gi) or just drop in when visiting. Today's class had about 10-12 black belts visiting from Japan, Ireland, and other places.

All the coaches are awesome, super knowledgeable, supportive and genuinely invested in helping you grow. Training here has totally changed the way I train. The guidance, mindset and encouragement I've received been truly life changing for me. If you are looking for a BJJ gym in Vegas, I would highly recommend!

We have had 2 disappointing experiences at Roll Society Jiu-Jitsu…read more About 6 or so months ago, I was searching for a local spot to supplement my son's primary sport (soccer) with some ground work, thinking jiu-jitsu could help with wrestling-like skills one day a week. We weren't aiming to become competitive fighters, just some extra training around his busy schedule. Initially, they offered a $25 drop-in class advertised for kids. When we arrived, there were no other children in the class. It ended up being essentially a private session with the coach, which they hyped as "more personalized," but it didn't impress us at all. The coaching felt basic, but the biggest issue was the hard sell started immediately, they pushed aggressively for signing up for more sessions or a full membership, even after I clearly explained that soccer was his main focus and we were only looking for occasional drop-ins. We tried a few more sessions (about 4 total), but then they suddenly informed us that drop-ins were no longer available and we'd have to commit to a monthly membership. That didn't align with our needs, so we stopped going. Recently, I noticed on Facebook that the same location had rebranded with a new name and what looked like new ownership. Hoping things had improved (especially for kids programs), I reached out via Messenger. They offered two free trial classes for my son, so we gave it another shot. Upon arriving, it was immediately clear it was the exact same people, same owner, just a new name on the door. They refused to honor the two free classes because we'd been there before (fair enough), but then said we could pay the drop-in fee which they'd previously claimed was discontinued, yet now it was back (now $30). I was fine with paying, but I wanted to observe if any other kids would show up for the "kids" session. None did. The staff (Joe) was rude and dismissive when I asked basic questions, and overall I was made to feel unwelcome. Later on, the person who I had messaged with about the free trials, followed up and claimed he was a new trainer there, and wanted to give my boy a chance to train with him, and everything that had transpired was because of a big mix up. That "Joey" (the rude staff) didn't know anything about our messages or his 2 free classes offer. I appreciated the follow up and the clarification, which is why I'm going to give them two stars instead of one. I get that gyms are businesses and need to make money, but I don't understand the disdain toward someone who just wants to use the drop-in option they advertise--especially when that particular kids class seems empty anyway. If you offer it, why get upset when people take you up on it? Overall, the inconsistent policies, high-pressure sales tactics, and occasional abrasiveness made for 2 frustrating experiences. It doesn't feel like a place that genuinely welcomes casual students or supports young athletes with busy schedules. It seems more focused on locking people into long-term commitments. We won't be going back, and I'd advise other parents to explore other options that prioritize the students over aggressive upselling.

So I feel he's both arrogant and obnoxious when provided with feedback he doesn't agree with. I had to tell him multiple times I was done with the conversation, this was because I was uncomfortable at that point. It definitely felt like I couldn't voice my opinion on his business He explained he didn't stop the kids from running out because he was busy unlocking another child from the restroom and that the reason he seemed annoyed/irritated when he came in and yelled at us all to move our cars was because he had gotten into it with the tow truck guy outside and had them unhook a car He also explained he's not arrogant, that it's just my opinion and basically wanted to know why I felt that way, I explained I've seen him interact with others and he wanted to know who/when, which didn't seem right if this is how he reacted to my review. He asked why i thought he was arrogant and I let him know because of how he was approaching from the review I left - i let him know he was being arrogant then and there As far as my son being afraid of him, I explained it was also due to one interaction they had and he said he speaks to the kids like a coach(which I explained from my opinion/perspective it didn't feel that way) My previous review mentioned my son got ring worm from borrowing the boxing gloves and he let me know that was impossible. I explained this was a gym and it was very possible but he wasn't having it so I stood my ground as well insisting he got it there because it happened after using their gloves which isn't a problem just brought it up as a precaution didn't need to be defensive about it He let me know that if I wasn't happy I could leave, I reminded him I paid for the year and it's not like he's going to refund me the remainder of the year. He said he wasn't kicking us out just letting us know we could leave if we weren't happy As far as the AC goes, he let me know the building isn't equipped with AC. He has 4 coolers installed which are on all day from the am until closing - I explained when I left the review it didn't feel like any cooler was on as the only hot breeze was from the 42" fan, no other. The reason for the one star was his approach and how he made me feel during this last interaction. I let him know I'd like to finish the remainder of the year for my son and not have to interact with him again.
