My review is from the perspective of someone with no combat sport experience, who was curious but always somewhat intimidated to check out Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Sergio, his instructors and students are all very friendly, welcoming and very tough! I've seen many of his students at all levels roll/spar and everything is at a high level of skill and energy. BJJ is full contact and I'm constantly out of my comfort zone but I'm in a controlled environment with some great BJJ practitioners who help me get better. I get pushed to my physical capabilities and every class ends with a feeling of accomplishment. It's very addicting in many ways as you become stronger physically and mentally while learning BJJ. Sergio is an amazing teacher with decades of BJJ experience as one of only 21 8th degree Black Belts in the world. He breaks down Jiu Jitsu in a way someone with no experience (like myself) can pick up. Every move is with purpose and it's explained to you clearly how and WHY we're performing the moves as we learn and perform them. Additionally, every single person I've been paired up with takes his same approach teaching others. Everyone is there to get better and make others better as well. So I'm bias, Sergio is not only a mentor he is a Master of Jiu Jitsu as well! I could stop at mentioning his 37 yrs as a black belt and the countless number of great Jiu Jitsu and MMA fighters he's molded or shown the true meaning of pressure! Sergio's school is no joke! Everyone greats you with a smile and everyone is welcomed as a member of the family. He is without a doubt royalty in the would of Jitz! Now he doesn't get as much press as the Graces do but don't underestimate his influence here in the US! I recall when I first joined, one day I counted 11 black belts present in class! All the guys from whiteto black are top notch! I can say I trained with most of the big names in Vegas, guess if you rolled all of them together maybe they would have Sergio's level of experience! I've been faithfully attending for the last 6 months with my family. I don't do reviews very often so i wanted to wait a while until formulating my opinion. It is challenging, but it's rewarding. It's scary initially, but it makes you more confident. You'll get "boo boos", but will become stronger the more often you attend. My daughter attends the kids class (MWF @ 4:30pm) and she LOVES it. The instructor is Master Sergio himself. He's an 8th degree Black Belt instructor of which there are only 21 of them in the world. He pays meticulous attention to detail and the kids soak up his instruction like a sponge. My wife and I attend the adult class immediately after the kids class which is also taught by Master Sergio. My body composition has changed drastically because of his training and I am no longer pre-diabetic. My wife feels much more empowered and is now comfortable rolling (Jiu-Jitsu term for sparring) with both men and women. If you are curious about joining or making a financial commitment, then don't worry, you can train here for free for a week with no obligation to continue. You'll meet a plethora of great people from all different occupational fields (Doctors, Lawyers, Law Enforcement, Teachers, IT Professionals, Entrepreneurs, Private Business Owners, etc) that all share the same things in common....getting healthy and learning Jiu-Jitsu! day 17 my final training session in vegas. fitting it is here. named simply after the man himself sergio penha. a true legend in brazilian jiu jitsu. he's an old war horse who's a brilliant technician and is all about one thing, submission and excitement. his academy 6 or more black belts. some of the cleanest mats around. and its fairly large. its about a year old so he has a lot of new students and a great time to come in, cuz a new school needs a new team. my trip had me feeling down cuz i felt trapped in vegas in a way. i have a buddy i am meeting in colorado and he wont be there til sunday so i'm stalling in vegas until he's a few days out from coming back. but meeting sergio and training with him lifted my spirits. his passion for jiu jitsu is contagious and all his guys and girls are all tough as hell! read more

I attended a women's self-defense class at this gym last month and it was such an awesome experience. I was pretty intimidated to go to the class just cause I didn't have any past experience when it comes to self-defense or jiu jitsu, but the trainers there were very patient and encouraging. The gym and their trainers are very welcoming which made the whole learning experience very rewarding. The class was 2 hours long and I was able to learn a variety of different techniques in self-defense in which I can use in real life. I have been fortunate to train with many blackbelts around the country. Sergio Penha is hands down the best instructor, technician and leaders I've met. You can tell the tone of a gym by knowing the head instructor. Sergio and his students fulfill their motto of "Family Loyalty Respect". In order to train BJJ you have to trust your training partners while still pushing the pace. Sergio's is a safe, fun and competitive place to train. Stopped in here during a trip to Vegas during an open mat on the advice of a friend who trains there. The competition was FIERCE, the rounds were long, but it was a great workout and everyone was very welcoming. It was an open mat so Sergio didn't have to be there, but he was, spending time and talking with his students (and even me). Crazy to see his red belt just hanging up in the locker room. If you're thinking about BJJ and live in/around Vegas, you'll be hard pressed to find a more focused, traditional BJJ school. Lots of talent here. read more

I travel quite a bit for work and for family events and I always make it a point to try and drop by some local gyms when I'm in town. Sergio is FANTASTIC.
