This school engages in racist scapegoating. I'm paraphrasing almost verbatim from a user account online: A bunch of hwyte graduating seniors from Seton Catholic High School broke onto the school to engage in some vandalism. They didn't steal anything, but broke some stuff, knocked over a few trashcans--general asshole behavior. On their way out, they spray painted a MASSIVE green d*ck on the side of the school. The night the act was committed, a woman across the street called the police to report that she saw kids painting a colossal cock on the building. She didn't get a good look at the main culprit because it was around midnight and the kids all had on dark clothing. So Binghamton Police report to the scene to investigate the graffiti and search the area for suspects. They didn't search long before profiling and detaining a Black kid walking nearby. As luck would have it, this kid attends Seton Catholic High School. "Jackpot!" the cops think to themselves while they illegally detain and question the boy. But unbeknownst to them, the boy is the son of local Black woman activist and street medic. So the boy knows his rights. He shows the cops that he has no paint on his hands or fingers and refuses to give the police any other info. He asks if he's free to go, and the cops have no choice but to cut him loose. The boy continues walking home but the police follow him the entire way. When the boy arrives home, the police stop him AGAIN and ask to search him. After denying them their unlawful search the boy goes into his house and tells his mom what happened. The police return later that night with razors and cut open the trash bags outside the boy's home. They were searching for any evidence linking the boy to the graffiti on the school. They find none. The following day, the school calls the mother and tells her about the graffiti and surveillance video footage showing a large group of students breaking into the school and committing various acts of vandalism. The footage isn't clear enough to identify any of the students, but the police have implicated one person--her Black son. Naturally, less than 5% of the student body at Seton High School is African American. The school asks her son to confess. The boy denies any involvement. The police call and ask to question the boy again, this time down at the station. The mother says only if he's formally charged and has a lawyer present. The police say he hasn't been charged and insist a lawyer isn't necessary. Today, a week later, the boy STILL hasn't been charged. The graffiti has been removed from the school. And the boy is scheduled to graduate on June 25th. But the school suspended the boy for 5 days off the mere ALLEGATION that he was involved. And now the school is threatening to prevent the boy from graduating. They've scheduled a mandatory meeting with the boy and his parents. At the meeting, they will likely threaten to expel the boy, thus delaying his graduation and preventing him from walking across the stage. The school wants someone--ANYONE--to go down for vandalizing the school, and figure targeting one of their few Black students is the safest, quietest, way to go about that.
