The appointments were well scheduled so I had time to address everything I wanted to with Angie. Not a single appointment felt rushed. I had originally planned a birth center birth and eventually changed my mind and decided on a home birth. The birth center is beautiful and comfortable, and I still had most of my appointments there. I had one home visit where I got to talk to Angie about different places I could have my baby, she brought a birth bag and a pool for when birthing time began. The team showed up to my birth and were so attentive to me! I thought for sure there was going to be a huge mess and carpet to clean after the birth but Angie had done such a good job with the chux pads that the carpet was completely clean. The team arranged my bed without me even noticing so right after my baby was born I could move to the bed. It was so perfect! After my baby was born, everyone looked healthy and comfortable, the birth team left the room so I could bond with my new baby. My husband got to weigh him, we got to participate in the newborn exams. It was just a great experience! I wouldn't have it any other way!

For every ailment I had during pregnancy, they had a holistic and effective way of addressing the issue. I was honestly blown away. However, the CNMs I worked with for the first several months were impersonal, not particularly supportive of what I wanted out of the experience, and difficult to get a hold of with concerns! I was about 5 months along when I met Dee, and I knew from the first visit that I wanted to work with her instead. She was compassionate, caring, and immediately I felt that she was invested in me, personally. Because of some circumstances that worked out in my favor, I got to have all of my prenatal appointments with Dee in my home. I loved that, and I wish I could have that particular bonus every time! She was always informative about my condition; she helped me maintain good nutrition and do everything we could to help prepare my body for childbirth and lactation. She also went out of her way to prepare me emotionally, for childbirth and postpartum. I had a couple of false starts to my labor, and Dee was patient with me as I texted her back and forth. I loved that she was so responsive and easy to reach. Once things actually got moving, Dee was amazing. She promptly came to my home with her assistants, and through every stage of my labor she was calm, encouraging, and professional. I had an absolutely amazing water birth with my son. I tore, and after we got moved out of the pool, she stitched me together SO much better than I had endured with my first childbirth. She and her assistants got my little family settled, made sure baby and I had started well with breastfeeding, got the house cleaned up, made us a meal, and started the laundry before they left, at about 3:00am. They were amazing. Dee returned the next day for follow up, as well as checking in with me over the next few weeks. I sincerely have no complaints from working with Dee as my midwife. My husband and I are moving this summer, otherwise I would employ her as my midwife for every child I ever have!

I do not believe that Birthing Your Way offers a safe environment for the patients or the employees. I took a tour of Birthing Your Way a little while ago when we were deciding where to birth our second baby. Heather, while polite, was fairly distant with us and not particularly welcoming. While we were touring the facility, a woman who was quite obviously in advanced labor tried to check into the center--or her husband did, since the mother was distressed and seemingly in a lot of pain. Heather acted almost inconvenienced when this laboring mother showed up--she seemed flustered and unprepared. The other midwife quickly tried to rush us through the rest of the tour, giving us a contract sheet and inviting us to sign then if we felt like we liked the facility. We left without signing. I was also concerned with how Heather talked to the other employees at the facility. She was very short and impatient with them and seemed disorganized and frazzled. The midwife who gave us the tour mentioned that most midwives do not stay long at the birth center. When we asked why, she vaguely said that they just move on to other things since many of them are students. However, after observing Heather's behavior for just thirty minutes, I wonder if her leadership attitude and lack of warmth and kindness towards her patients and employees contributes to the turnover rates at Birthing Your Way. Mamas, you want a birthing environment that is welcoming, unhurried, and peaceful. Where you birth your baby matters. I am truly happy for those who had a positive experience here, and I hope that happens for the majority of women, but I implore you to think critically about what you see here before you make a decision. Real changes need to be made before this center can be considered a safe place to birth.

We truly felt that our two births with her were exactly what we wanted, and she made them happen how we wanted them to happen. She truly believes in birthing YOUR way! I appreciate the high standards of professionalism we see, especially when it comes to communication. Every time we are faced with a decision or Heather has a suggestion, she is clear about the pros and cons, the potential benefits and hazards, and what a certain course of action might entail or require. However, the reason we will always go back to Birthing Your Way is the connection. Heather is clear and concise, but also kind and empathetic. Her willingness to listen to, help, and work with us quickly made her and my wife fast friends, and her knowledge, skill, and life-saving reactions gained her our trust forever.

Edit:: I'm still not thrilled with this office staff and Intermountain Healthcare in general, but I…read morehad to come back and write about Dr. Thomas because he really is amazing and quite possibly saved my son's life when he had the cord wrapped around his neck during delivery. He was always thoughtful and always made me feel like my thoughts and feelings were valid. He never rushed through an appointment or told me how to do things with my pregnancy. He was very personable, came in on a Saturday to induce me, and he even brought me a gift (a really cute car seat/nursing cover) after I delivered. If we decide to have a fourth baby, I will look forward to delivering with Dr. Thomas again. I'm pregnant with my third baby, so this isn't my first rodeo. We just moved to Utah a couple months ago and I was really specific with what kind of OB I was looking for: attentive, personable, someone who answers all my questions but also let's me run my own pregnancy the way I want to. I didn't get to meet dr. Thomas on my first visit, which I thought was kind of an impersonal approach to pregnancy. They just had me some in for lab work/a physical. How their practice is spread out is pretty confusing. My first visit, I was on the second floor. The lab is on the third. And my subsequent visits have been on the third floor. There wasn't hardly any direction on my first visits and it left me a little frustrated. And then there's the office staff... I had both of my little kids with my on my first visit. They have a small play area (with no toys) in their waiting area, and my kids are pretty well behaved, but I just got the vibe that they weren't welcome there. We do a Medishare, so we are technically cash patients. My previous OBs office thought this was great because it means they don't have to deal with insurance; but this office makes me feel like I'm an inconvenience every single time I come in. "Sooo you know you have to pay by 36 weeks right..." (yes I am very aware and only 16 weeks. You have my social and my address; if I don't pay it by the time it's due, then by all means, come after me.) "soooo you don't want to make any payments...?" (No, the whole bill will be paid in entirety next month, I've already cleared it with billing.) "soooo you know that you have to pay the ultrasound up front...no, we can't give you a bill before hand...sorry." And then they told me I can't bring my baby into the ultrasound, which I've never heard before and is really inconvenient because now i have to get a babysitter so my husband can come with me. So I haven't had the best experience with them. And then there's the issue with the pencils for the urine sample. Every time I've gone in, their pencils are broken and they just have little remnant pieces they expect you to pick up and use? I've told them several times, they don't even get up to look and replace them. How hard is it to just get a sharpie??? No one wants to use a half inch pencil piece to write their name all wonky on the plastic cup. The medical assistant is very nice and warm and personable and Dr. Thomas seems nice and thorough. I like him as a doctor and am looking forward to delivering with him, but I don't look forward to my office visits just because his front desk staff isn't welcoming and is super condescending.

She makes you feel like she truly cares and understands you and whether you've been a patient for a day (me) or a year that she's there for you and you are old friends. I'm long past my child bearing years but I'm in perimenopause and I felt seen, heard and acknowledged by her regarding this phase of life. She also took care and ordered blood tests and when those didn't come out in my favor asked me to repeat them before she treated me for disorders that may or may not need to be treated if the follow up tests were better. I haven't done my follow up yet but I like that they have a lab in office and you can stop in at anytime during office hours. I have high blood pressure and she also set me up on some blood pressure meds to help me deal with that. I wasn't expecting the level of care I got from this office so it was pleasantly surprising.
