They staff are very helpful, friendly and very competent about what the are selling. I also like the oval shaped display plan the shelves are laid out it gives the customer a good mini tour around and see their fresh product. Another added bonus is that it is located in a spacious food section of the indoor market and the place is very clean and tidy. If you lucky you might find a unique catch on display when you visit, last year they had a 1.2 metre Swordfish caught from somewhere in West Africa on display.

I'm sure the slippery fella was included in the list of 10 Most Diabolical Fish on Earth that I was reading about on-line the other day. Anyhow, face to face with my sub-aquatic nemesis, I was truly amazed by this place. They have just about every possible type of fish and seafood one can think of, and more besides. I don't know how common this kind of comprehensive fish/seafood emporium is elsewhere, but I reckon it has to be worth a visit to Manchester alone and if you have some small children you could take, all the better! It's like some kind of edible museum. An aquarium of exotic tastes, no less. The staff were incredibly friendly too. I was told that the Conger Eel is often bought by African customers and you buy it by the slice. Other residents included huge bream and carp, a plethora of jet black catfish nestled barb to barb at the front of one side of the gargantuan oval counter and several decapitated fish heads, which according to the monger, are bought and used for fish stock. Further still along this plank of plenty, was the seafood section replete with pink spider crabs, king and emperor prawns, and an assortment of shellfish that ranged from cockles and whelks to oysters. Got a bunch of fresh oysters, some crab meat and some shrimp. The oyster of course we ate right away. The shrimp and the crab meat we've had for dinner later that day. Quality was great. Fresh, smooth and creamy oysters. The crab meat was lovely sweet, full of flavours. With the shrimp we made some tasty seafood dip. Really a nice place to grab some fresh and tasty seafood. Friendly people, fair prices.

They're tiny pots of unseasoned boiled and chilled seafood from about 2.5-4£ a pot depending on whether it's prawns, mussels, cockles, whelks, crayfish, etc. Perfectly size for sampling if you can't commit or want to sample them all. There are condiments available for you to season after, but I prefer to eat them as-is, since plain boiled fresh seafood is already have their own briny flavor. Provided are forks, toothpicks, salt, pepper, mayo, Marie Rose sauce (ketchup mayo).

However, those brave enough to go down the pokey back road its on will find themselves rewarded with a lovely dining experience, complimented by helpful and friendly waiting staff as well as delicious cooking using locally grown ingredients. As I said, Forge advertise themselves primarily as a fish restaurant, so it's no surprise to find their menu dominated by fish and other seafood dishes. I'm not a big fan of seafood generally but I love fish and have found some of the dishes at Forge are both interesting and tasty, such as the halibut steak and the grilled Dover sole, which although expensive is worth the price. Aside from seafood and fish dishes, their meat menu is similarly impressive as it boasts a good variety of options including roast duck as well as a good range of different steaks. The restaurant may not be in the best location in Southport but it's worth putting that to one side and giving Forge a go, particularly if you're a seafood and fish fan.

But even though it's something of a concealed weapon be sure to book in advance. The place is nicely bustling even during the day and it's more than popular, so be careful!

    If you live in Nottingham or visit it often, when you think of a seafood restaurant you probably…read morethink of Loch Fyne. You probably shouldn't. Take a wander up Mansfield Road, or probably better still, hop on a bus or jump in a cab, as The Lobster Pot is quite a way up. It is worth going out of your way for though. This small restaurant in my opinion is the best fish / seafood place in the city (not that there are many to choose from), and it is a shame that it isn't closer to the city centre. Still, if it were, then the prices would probably be higher to cover higher overheads on property. I am a big fan of mussels, and this place does them wonderfully. Their menu has a good choice of fish and shellfish dishes and a small selection of meat dishes in case anybody in your party isn't keen on seafood. As far as I know though, there aren't any vegetarian options...at least, there weren't the last time I checked their menu online. Some of the dishes have an oriental bent, such as the thai fishcakes, prawn spring rolls and sesame prawn toast starters, but there are plenty of 'regular' seafood dishes. My personal favourites at this place are the smoked haddock chowder as a starter, a hearty, creamy soup which is quite filling in itself, filled with chunks of smoked fish and potato as it is. I then like to have a main course of mussels, usually the ones steamed in chilli and basil, although the more traditional Moules Marinieres are also great. A side dish of french fries goes wonderfully with them. I also sometimes indulge in a couple of fresh oysters, which can be bought individually. Two of these with a splash of tabasco sauce are enough for me as I find them quite rich, I could never eat a full portion as a main course. Various forms of salmon are well represented on the menu, although I have never sampled them myself. There is usually a specials board on display, giving options that don't appear on the regular menu. The restaurant boasts some very reasonably priced wines, with a bottle of house wine costing just under ten pounds, and plenty of others around 11 and 12 pounds. As this is a small place, I would suggest calling to book, especially at weekends and in the Christmas period. Another point in this place's favour is that during the festive period, they keep their regular menu on, instead of forcing a "special" Christmas menu upon you as many restaurants seem to. With the price of different fish and seafood varying so much, it is hard to give an average cost for a meal here, however I do believe with this place that you get what you pay for, and i've never found myself feeling bad about the money i've put down. Seriously, if you are serious about seafood, forget about Loch Fyne. The Lobster Pot wins, claws down!
