My Daughter cut her chin and needed stitches on a Sunday night, so we headed here after being sent by a Sutter Health urgent care center. The ER was hopping and we waited over three, nearly four, hours for the stitches. I get it, my Child wasn't dying--other patients took priority. The doctor who eventually performed the stitches was nice and efficient. The whole procedure took 15, maybe 20 minutes start to finish. Nine stitches to be exact. The shocker was the bill for over $2700. That's the rate with Blue Shield insurance (we have a high deductible plan) and we're on the hook for the full amount. I asked them for a review of the bill because it seemed so high (couldn't be right, right?) but nope, they came back to confirm that that's exactly what it should have cost. To be clear, that's just the facility fee from CPMC's emergency room. The doctor's bill was a separate change. I shudder to think what the bill would be if you actually needed an x-ray or some sort of diagnostic work up. Anyway, proceed with caution and check your insurance--the rates are here are sky high with no justification. Just because they can.

Well, let's count... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8... 8! 1) One that took my blood pressure, temperature and weight and showed me my purple couture outfit with matching green socks to be worn during my stay 2) One that inserted the IV into my arm (single hit to my vein, thank goodness!) 3) One that asked me about my medical history and took notes on a computer like a secretary 4) One that introduced himself and assisted the doctor during my operation 5-6) Two more nurses that were in the operating room when I entered that room 7) One that helped me post-operation in the holding room 8) One that helped me post-operation in my waiting room that gave me pain meds, helped me change, took my blood pressure every 30 minutes, took my temperature a few times That's 8 nurses plus my doctor and an anesthesiologist = 10 A total of 10 people helped with my 3 hour operation in which I was at the hospital for a total of 8 hours (check-in, operation Jenny T. and recovery time). Each and every one of them were friendly, professional, and knew exactly what each had to do for me (or is it to me?). The facilities was typical of a hospital, yucky. The operating room, which I walked into with nurse #4 was surreal and 10x scarier than a brain surgery scene performed by Dr. McDreamy on Grey's Anatomy. I had an entire minute to soak in the sterile room before the anesthesiologist turned me into sleepy town. But overall, I'm so grateful that I had a great surgeon with excellent health care workers. I definitely felt well cared for. I must admit, I watch way too many Korean soap operas and evil thoughts of dramatic things happening to me made me all the more nervous. My tip to you, don't watch Korean soap operas prior to surgery because NO, your body will not swapped out for another. Think happy thoughts and know that you are getting well taken care of at this hospital.

The OBGYN's here are knowledgeable and take their time in answering questions. My labor and delivery team was stupendous and adept at what they did. It was rough but they made it as smooth as it possibly could have been and I'm forever grateful for them! Postpartum was a nightmare but three nurses in particular were so helpful and never made me feel like I was asking for too much. Donna, Alba and Mary! I received assistance twice from Dr. Jorgenson's team at Sutter Health CPMC on Van Ness…read more I have a regular pain management specialist, and she has provided clear instructions to administer only specific IV pain medications, as others are ineffective due to my high tolerance and ongoing pain management regimen at home. During my initial hospitalization, Dr. Jorgenson promptly discontinued my pain medications and left me unattended for hours, which compelled me to plead for relief. His attitude was reminiscent of treating me as a street drug addict. I am highly responsible regarding my pain management and communicate explicitly with my pain specialist, Dr. Meredith Adamo, of the Tom Waddell Clinic. My subsequent hospitalization, immediately following the first, was markedly worse. Once again, I was treated as if I were a drug addict. Despite the explicit instructions documented in my chart, I was left without pain medication for five hours, during which my pain exceeded a level of ten. One aspect that Dr. Jorgenson handled well was delegating communication to his team's resident physicians and having them come with comments. However, they were unable to approve my medications. When I requested to speak directly with him, he declined to meet with me, and I was never able to speak with him after the first meeting. It was exceedingly frustrating to be treated as nothing more than a number. After five hours without medication, a resident doctor from Dr. Jorgenson's team approached me to inquire if I wished to transfer to the Davis campus. I consented but emphasized the urgent need for pain medication, having endured a prolonged period without relief. Although he refused to administer the medication, he provided the necessary paperwork for the transfer. I had to assertively state my intention not to sign the documentation to secure the medication, and even then, he offered the minimal possible dose, which caused me considerable distress. I again threatened to withhold my signature to obtain an appropriate dose that would facilitate ambulance transfer with manageable pain. It is profoundly disheartening to have to plead for pain medication that has been approved by my pain specialist, as if I were a drug addict. Healthcare professionals like Dr. Jorgenson undermine trust in the medical system. I only seek medical care when I am critically ill, driven by the fear of enduring unalleviated pain and being regarded as a mere number rather than a human being. Such treatment is unjust. I speak not only on my own behalf but also for others facing similar neglect. While many physicians are commendable, a small percentage, including Dr. Jorgenson, tarnish the reputation of the medical profession. Once again, this does not encompass all of the diligent nurses and doctors in the medical field who perform their duties wholeheartedly and dedicate themselves fully each day. I received assistance from Dr. Jorgenson in October and November of 2025.

My husband usually complains about food at any place he is, and he is doing well with the hospital food here. The nurses are excellent and he has been seen by doctors from the care team. It may feel as if there is a lack of communication before being admitted, but we found that the nurses and staff are working together to accommodate all of his needs and requests so that once he was in the room, everything was in order and specialist started showing up to see him almost immediately. The MyChart app is extremely helpful as I can confirm that his care is progressing well. Once he is taken into surgery, I will be updated via text in real time and can ask questions of the care team, if necessary. This is far superior to communication from other hospitals. We don't live close to SF, so the drive is a drawback since he is in for a week. And the larger hassle is parking. Valet parking is available, but the hours are limited and getting your vehicle is a challenge. Plus the cost adds up. This means that instead of having visitors twice a day, he will see someone once a day.

The Mission Bay location is excellent but when we have an emergency we are brought to the Parnassus hospital. The hospital is extremely busy with a variety of cases, it reminds me of an episode of the Pitt. The hospital staff does the best it can but with all the people coming in, it's hard to manage. We got triaged and waiting a long time to seen but I understand because we have a "problem" but it's not life threatening like some of the people walking in the door. So we wait. He was admitted and there wasn't a room available for about a day, it's not the hospitals fault. They are doing their best with what they have. Our health care system is broken and blaming the hospital with one and two stars is easy to do, we have only received the best care available when we have been at the hospital and I am grateful to the staff who do what they can. We live over two hours away and I drive to get care here because they are the best. People might not agree and I know we hate to wait, but I would rather be seen by the best.

My elderly parent unfortunately goes here and they rarely have certain life-preserving medications available where my parent who is not very mobile has to go multiple visits to get the same medication. It's always "come back tomorrow" or "come back next week" or "comeback in two weeks". This is a hospital pharmacy. There should rarely be shortages of any medication. Even some basic portable medical devices that most pharmacies carry have also been delayed. Again, this is a hospital pharmacy. The worst thing is they don't care and the a staff member not involved in the conversation will interject from the other booth, "Is it even covered by insurance?" even though she is not involved in the transaction and it has been covered for years, as if that is an excuse for not having certain important medications available. It's too bad, because the review should be something like 3.5 stars but the extremely poor customer service of the pharmacy brings this down to 1 star automatically. They need clean house and fix what's wrong here so the perceptions of the hospital are not dragged down by this disgrace of a pharmacy. I am willing to upgrade the rating once they prove to us that the pharmacy has improved. I don't see how this can change with the existing management and personnel as the culture as indicated customer service has strong resemblance to the DMV. It makes me think of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi episode where the guy says, "No soup for you!" except replace the lobster bisque with medications! "Serenity now!" ‍‍

While the staff at the hospital was kind, efficient and professional, I can't say the same for Doctor Wythe. The ER nurse took all the notes of my symptoms for 5-10 minutes, and I waited for another 5-10 minutes until the doctor showed up. Instead of looking at the nurse's notes, he asked me to repeat the symptoms. While I questioned why he didn't look at the nurse's notes, his answer was "because I am the doctor". Then he proceeded asking the nurse "what do YOU think?" in a very sarcastic tone. I was very weak and barely talk but didn't want to continue this drama, so I just repeated my symptoms again. The consultation with the doctor took less than 10 minutes witout involving any medical device. The billing price got back at $1,365!!! Absolutely outrageous!!! Moreover, the medications were not part of the bill. This bill is purely for the ER visit. The level of care provided is unacceptably remote from the price charged!!!

Needless to say, I wasn't feeling my best. The quality of nursing care was outstanding. Every nurse I met was knowledgeable, efficient, funny, compassionate, and remarkably responsive. Call lights were answered almost immediately, and despite what I know must have been a busy unit, no one ever made me feel rushed. What stood out most was the teamwork. I'm a very difficult IV stick and also required both straight catheterizations and a Foley catheter. Whenever hospital policy required more than one nurse to be present, someone appeared almost instantly to help. Throughout my stay I repeatedly watched nurses jump in to assist one another. It was clear that this is a team that genuinely likes and supports each other, and patients benefit from that culture. I also appreciated that nearly everyone providing my care was an experienced nurse. The only trainees I encountered were a couple of wonderful nursing students from Samuel Merritt and USF, who were friendly, enthusiastic, and appropriately supervised. The food deserves its own paragraph. It was genuinely good, and the dietary staff happily prepared customized meals for me every day as I recovered. That's not something I usually expect from hospital food. The facility itself is beautiful, comfortable, modern, and extremely well maintained. Everything worked exactly as it should, and even my guests commented on how nice the hospital was. As a clinician myself, I pay attention to how teams function. This unit was impressive. The staff was highly competent, extraordinarily efficient, and somehow still managed to be warm, funny, and genuinely enjoyable to spend time with. Highly recommended.

Everyone showed great compassion and the team was very effective. +They were able to give fairly accurate timeframes for every step of the process. +I especially appreciated the constant text communications, so I knew how my family member was doing and when I need to come back to pick them up. +The surgeon and nurse both individually called me to debrief the surgery and review post-op care. The meds were sent to the correct pharmacy and we had no trouble picking up everything and going straight home. +I also called the on-call doctor in the middle of the night and they got back to me quickly to address concerns. +All the staff we encountered were professional and helpful. Improvements needed: -One thing that they could have communicated better was that only 1 caregiver was allowed to be in the pre-op with the patient. My sibling came and had to wait outside. -The hand IV access was a bit painful according to my family member, but he is a hardstick. Maybe they can add a "vein whisperer" phlembotomist for hardstick patients. -The coordinator was a little hard to reach at the beginning of this medical journey, but she advocated for us and was able to swoop us last minute appointments so treatment wasn't delayed. From first contact with UCSF to the surgery, with all the imaging in between, it took about 8 weeks. Surgery dates are scheduled based on urgency of the condition. For us, we felt the timeframe was reasonable. -The CT machine went down on Sunday, the night before the appointment. They left us a voicemail on Sunday night to reschedule, but there was no one to talk to until Monday. We showed up for the imaging appt anyhow (because the doctor needed to see the scans the same day) and they were able to pencil us in at an alternative location nearby. It was quite nerve-wrecking on Sunday night and I can see how that can be confusing for non-healthcare background patients to figure this all out. Overall: some hiccups at the beginning, but the rest of it was mostly smooth and the surgery team was excellent. Primary insurance: Medicare

Waiting was not a problem so long as we were able to do the meeting in-person. Overall a satisfactory experience. Also, the specialist was as knowledgeable as we expected.
