Horrible experience I have been living in San Francisco for 10 years and never had the desire to ride this before, mostly because I had never heard anything good about it. Unfortunately, my experience confirmed everything I had heard. My child loves trains and buses, so we decided to give it a try to make him happy. We waited for two hours, and then out of nowhere they announced it was delayed. When someone asked how long the delay would be, the staff said, "I don't know." It was extremely frustrating -- isn't it their job to know what's going on? If they had been clear from the beginning, we would have left, but we thought it might only be a 10-minute delay. Almost 40 minutes later, they said it was closed and they didn't know when it would reopen. They mentioned there was a "free bus" around the corner, but people were fighting just to get on it because it was the only one they provided. Just a reminder: each ticket costs $9, yet no one explained anything or offered help. Unfortunately, I didn't learn my lesson. Wanting to make my child happy, we tried again another day. I honestly hope my child never asks to ride it again. After waiting another hour, just as we were about to get on, the man taking tickets told me -- in a very rude way -- that he would not accept my ticket and told me to move so others could get in. When I asked why and what he meant, he just repeated, "I'm not taking your ticket. Move." No explanation, no help, just rudeness. My husband told him we would buy another ticket, and even then he refused to let us on -- despite the car staying there for another 10 minutes. Powell-Hyde cable car driver had to have been the worst person for this job, He was by far the rudest man I have encountered. It wasn't just me he verbally abused, he targeted another couple too. It made the ride uncomfortable for everyone onboard- including my children. Once we arrived at our destination, a couple people came up to us and expressed their concerns regarding how awful the driver had been. read more

Okay, I did them. Can I move on? Yes, they are fun to ride. Yes, they are the most touristy thing to do in the city outside the Golden Gate Bridge. Yes, the Powell & Hyde line is the prettiest and most touristy of the three lines, as it runs past Lombard St, Alcratraz Island, and you can pick it up at the Embarcadero if you wish. Is it worth it? Yes and no. Once you do it, you do not need to do it anymore. The lines to get on these things can stretch up to two hours, the operators can be fairly rude, and some of the riders act like they have never been on a train before. They will fight you for the handrail parts of the train, and everybody wants to film or photograph themselves hanging out from the train. Do not get me started on line jumpers. You should still do it for history's sake. These are the last remaining cable cars in the world, and the ride on this line is pretty special. Just do not expect it to be like the opening scene of Full House where everybody's merry and giddy. It was more a mad house and a disorganized mess. I got on and rode for a half hour before jumping off at one of the stops. It helped I had a 3 day pass (order online), so virtually I could get on and off at any time during my time in San Francisco. Make sure you hold onto the handrails if you want to hang out. The hills are pretty steep and the consistent and sudden stops will have you on your behind if you are not careful. Now that I accomplished riding these vintage cars, I think it is safe to say I can move on. read more

One of those things you need to try at least once if you are in SF!! We had hoped to ride the route up from Fisherman's wharf then back down but even if you buy an unlimited day pass they seemingly still make you get off after going one direction and get back on and there can be quite a wait to do so. So our plan didn't work to ride it back down to our original location. Still a cool thing to do though and the hills are so crazy steep. We were not brave enough to ride standing on the outside and it definitely seemed like a tight squeeze at times from traffic passing by. We had so much fun riding the cable cars today! It was $13 dollars a person for the whole day and the pass includes trolleys and other public transportation (not Bart ). If your visiting the city it's a must and if you want to go back and forth from the piers to downtown union square then make sure you take the Hyde cable car. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) operates the cable cars in the city of San Francisco. The cable cars only cover off a very limited area of San Francisco as a whole which is mostly the north east quadrant which includes east of Van Ness and all north of Market. There are only 3 lines and 5 terminus points for the cable car system. The simplest of the lines which only runs along California Street has the western terminus end at California just east of Van Ness and the eastern terminus is near Market and Drumm near the Hyatt Regency and Ferry Terminal building. The other 2 lines are the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason lines. For the Powell-Hyde the northern terminus is at the south east corner of the park where the Maritime Museum is located just east of Ghirardelli Square. The Powell-Mason line's northern terminus is actually at Taylor street and Bay but the operators may ask you to disembark south of Bay. For both the Powell lines the southern terminus is at Market Street at the bottom of the Powell street promenade. Both the Powell lines turn west on Jackson and east on Washington when switching and turning to north or south. The closest stop on either of those lines for Chinatown is Clay street and then walking east a few blocks towards Grant. Both north ends of the Powell lines end or near Fisherman's Wharf area with the Hyde line being west and Mason (Taylor/Bay) being just a few blocks south but more east and closer the Pier 39. For the most part, the street cars will board or unload passengers where it is flat which is in many cases, the middle of a street intersection. All other vehicles must yield to the street cars and the lights will change to flashing when a street car stops in an intersection. This is your chance to get off but watch for cars that may not know better and not stop. One way rides are 7 dollars, payable to one of the operators on board. As far as I know the system is cash only as I've never seen anybody pay with plastic. You can also purchase MUNI paper passports for 1, 3, or 7 days which allow for unlimited rides on the cable car as well as the buses and streetcars of the MUNI system only. They are 23, 34, and 45 dollars respectively. There are other ways to get the passport which is on MUNImobile (app) and Clipper cards (regional transit) but I don't know how it works for clipper because there's no scanning/tapping on cable cars. If the cable cars are full say, they just left Market and you're at Bush, the cable car won't stop. You'll know if a cable car is full if the inside is full and there's people hanging off both sides at the front, two to a step. It is fun and allowed to ride standing while holding on to the side handle but you just need to be strong enough to hold on and stay on especially when the cars turn on Jackson and Washington. If you want to stop before one of the terminus points do not pull anything that looks like a string on the car. Simply ask the rear operator for the stop by street or attraction and they'll stop and announce the stop for you. They may even announce other unrequested stops like Chinatown (Clay), the Cable Car museum, Union Square, etc. read more

The wait time was about an hour or more. Long story short my experience was going to be horrible due to a cable car driver that was beyond rude, did not respect his/her own supervisor and kicked us out of the cable care saying he/she felt threatened by us. All i did was ask a simple question. I asked, "we had been waiting in line for an hour or more and the people you let in first (they were behind us in line) took the seats we had been waiting for. Can you please talk to them?" This cable car driver said, " you either get on or you wait for the next cable car". So I decided to talk to this persons supervisor. The supervisor listened to my concern but the cable car driver made the decision for his/her supervisor saying, "I want them out of my car". The supervisor did what that driver wanted not what he thought was correct. I cannot believe how this person said they felt threatened when all I did was ask politely and just wanted him/her to be fair.The picture I posted is of the rude cable car driver. He/she made one question turn into a big deal that nearly made this experience horrible. On the next cable car, the driver named Lance was amazing!! He made sure our experience was so much more fun and definitely made everyone on the cable car enjoy the ride. Thank you Lance for the amazing experience and for being kind and caring . No trip to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the historic cable cars. They are an icon of the city and are features in countless movies and images. The national historic landmark still operate as a real part of the city mass transit system although you have to pay a premium to ride. The system now only operates three lines - Powell-Hyde, Powell-Mason, and California. Two of the three start near Powell and Market Streets and the Powell BART station and end near Fisherman's Wharf although at different termini. The California line uses a different car and runs along California Street from near the Embarcadero to Van Ness. This rolling history uses original cars restored to near original condition. The cable is underground moving from a central power house. Cars grab the cable to move and release to stop. The operators are well trained in the grueling task of manually operating a century old technology in modern time! Functionally, the Powell lines do a decent job of moving you between tourist destinations. Most people just ride from downtown to Fisherman's Wharf or Ghirardelli Square, but you can also get on and off in Chinatown and Nob Hill. All lines serve the Cable Car Museum too. The California line is less crowded and less convenient for tourists. I prefer the more relaxed environment and nicer views, but it does not really help you visit the tourist spots. Combined with the vintage streetcars, you can really get around this hilly city in a rather unique way. The ride is quite rough and is mega popular. This can mean horrendous waits at both ends making for a very long ride. It is somewhat worth the effort though as a completely unique San Francisco experience. Late nights are pretty easy for a more intimate experience. Don't settle for the imitations, spend your money and time on the real San Francisco Cable Cars. SF is easy to get around without a car. At least as a visitor, I felt no need for one- we rode trains and buses. And we made a point to ride the cable cars. We arrived in the middle of the Pride Parade, and the cable was down so we watched the parade for awhile. Swung back by the turnaround and heard from a local not to stand in line there, but to go up a block or two and hop on. (Purchase your ticket ahead of time, or pay when you board.) We got on and got seats, and enjoyed the ride to our destination. It's a nice way to get around, and you get to see the city a little. The cars are ancient technology- cables and bars, etc., nothing modern. This and the steep hills bothered Sweetie a bit; she said it seemed like a roller coaster, and I can kinda see that. The driver and conductor are working to keep the speed constant, the cable tight (I guess,) etc. And the turnaround is a very simple turntable in the street- not like the railroad roundhouse I expected. The employees were generally friendly, and answered questions. One driver in particular was very good about warning when we were going to turn, go down a steep hill, etc., and helping people get to open seats. The price is a bit steep, but it's a fun experience. Pro-tip for "cable car turnaround location": Get there by 8am and there's barely a line. I took the cable car twice: 8am and 10:30am at the "cable car turnaround location" (i.e Outside the GAP store). The line usually builds up by 9am. When I took the cable car at 10:30am, I waited almost an hour to get on. Cable car rides costs $7 one-way. If you plan to take the cable car more than once, then definitely get the Muni 1/3/7 days passports since it's unlimited rides on the Muni including the cable car. The San Francisco cable car system is the world's last permanently operational manually operated cable car system, as a tramway whose cars are pulled along by cables embedded in the street. It is an icon in the City by the Bay, and was a key part of of my commute from the Powell Street BART Station to my former Russian Hill apartment. I would patiently wait in line, pay the fare, watch the tourists, marvel at the bell ringing and stick shift skill of the Cable Car operators, enjoy the view, get off at Swenson's, and walk down the hill with my ice cream cone in hand. I also love riding on the outside and hanging my body out. And in the morning I'd wake up and do it again. Amen! The Cable cars are part of the Muni system, and operate on two routes from downtown near Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf, with a third route along California Street. If you're a tourist, make sure that you pick the Hyde Street line when you hop on at Market Street. Otherwise you'll end up at the Projects at the end near Mason. If you're a Financial District type or want to go from the Ferry Building area to Chinatown or to hook up with the other lines, the California Cable Car is for you. The cable cars are also not to be confused with San Francisco's trolleys, which operate on Market Street. That's a different and cool ride in itself. read more

With the Powell St line being less than a block from my hotel and having purchased the CityPass how could I not ride the Cable Cars? With the CityPass Muni including the Cable Cars are free so no $5.00 out of my pocket to ride the moving National Historic Landmark. Though if I did pay $5.00 for my first ride I'd say it would worth it, half way up Powell St the brake driver guy says 'oh shit' under his breath and the next thing you know we started rolling backwards, that was kind of fun. I recently wrote a not so nice review of the cable car system in San Francisco. I had observed several empty cars waiting in line while people waited in line for a car to be sent. Well, after having visited the cable car museum I now understand why. The cable traveling under the streets can only create so much pull. They can't overload the system: it can only do so much work. What do you think of when you first think of when you say San Francisco....? OK after Rice-A-Roni... Yes, it's the Cable Cars!!! Either hanging off the side or them being flipped over in a crazy movie chase scene. We made sure we tried these touristy transportation traps!!! In the morning on the way to Fisherman's Wharf we walked up to the line and bought tickets to ride it, we stood in line for about 5 minutes and realized this thing was not going to be moving anywhere fast so decided to take the buses over instead and just ride it home from Fisherman's Wharf instead. It is 5 dollars each way. Pretty expensive and inefficient to get around town. When we catching it on the way back to our Hotel there was no one waiting to get on so we were able to grab a hand rail and lean off the side. I must say this thing is slow, scary roller coaster. It stops at every intersection and every time it starts to pick up speed going down hill the conductor pulls on the break. If you are holding on the the handrail it's quite scary since all it is keeping you on the thing is your grip. Also the other cable car and cars that pass your cable car come extremely close. I would not recommend doing this more than once since it's a waste of time and money and not really all that safe. read more

Seriously, you could walk faster than the cable car. You could take the regular Muni bus 4x for less than it costs to board the cable car. The cable car does not take transfers. The cable car stops at seemingly every block. The cable car is usually filled with annoying tourists asking the driver to stop and take pictures. Cable car operators are either really funny or total a**holes. If it's raining, you're guaranteed to get soaked if you stand on the outside. Sounds like this thing really sucks, doesn't it? You can't really put a price on something as historic as the cable cars. If you're a local like me, a MUNI pass will let you board them for free. It's not the fastest way for me to get to Market st. but it certainly is relaxing and has great views along the way. I personally enjoy talking to the tourists and giving them tips on places to go. Hmmm...I would just so move here because I really really like San Fran and of course the cable cars! Don't get me wrong I love NYC, but if only it had cable cars... When I visited San Fran with my 2 girl friends the guy who collects the cash was clearly hitting on us. The cable car was pretty crowded, but there was room. He didn't allow others on, but kept saying that we can get on. Then he kept talking to us and asked us for our names. It was weird because that guy is old enough to be my dad. Any way back to cable cars, they are really really neat! I love being able to go through the neighborhoods riding this thing, while taking pictures. I love holding on to the pole, with wind in my hair and going down hill. I can't wait to go back to San Fran, so I can ride another cable car! read more

Bottom Line: A historic mode of transportation that is practical for San Francisco's steep hills and a quintessential activity for tourists. I love America, Americana and American history so I love San Francisco's historic cable cars. I am still fascinated with this 140+ year old mode of transportation so when I am in the city I ride these cable cars as much as possible and sometimes without a specific destination in mind. The MUNI employees that serve as the gripmen and brakeman are grumpy more often than not but I will not let them ruin this experience for me. (Also, I try to sympathize with them on how annoying the tourists must be at times.) Depending on the time of day and destination, the cable cars can be a mechanism for commuters to get to work, a substitute for a school bus or a really neat tourist attraction. Of the original 23 lines in the city, three remain today. The California Line is most popular for commuters but in the early morning hours I will see mothers taking their kids to school via the Powell-Mason line. The Powell-Hyde line is definitely the most popular line with tourists and has the best known stops along the way like the famous Buena Vista Café. Taking a ride late night when the gripmen let go (literally) can be thrilling and you may get to experience a high-speed cable-free ride downhill (not for the faint of heart). The current rate for a ride on a cable car is $7 which is pricey so I think a better deal is to get an all day or three-day MUNI pass which includes the streetcars and busses too. Also, the $7 fee does not include any transfers. In other words, you can't take the Powell-Mason Line to the California Line and switch cars without paying another $7. If you are going to ride the cable cars, it's a good idea to review MUNI's tips for how to ride the cable cars. Reading some Yelp reviews may help too. It's good to look like you know what you are doing and even better to actually know that you are doing when it comes to this historic mode of transportation and less-than-patient MUNI employees. To fully appreciate the manual transportation, consider jumping off the Powell-Mason or Powell-Hyde line at the Cable Car Museum and Barn. I live on California and Larkin, so I ride them daily as a commuter. I feel lucky. Little cramped durning tourist hours. The California line is more a commuter line, but the Powel lines are mostly tourist lines. I've learned so much about these things. More then necessary. One thing is do NOT call a cable car, a trolly. THEY ARE NOT TROLLIES. Cable cars are pulled by a large cable under the ground that connects back to the wheel house. Trollies and old fashion streetcars are power by electric lines above the track and have on board motors. Also do not confuse the cable cars with the bus things that look like them. Those are tour lines. Cable cars are on tracks, not tires. They not have steering wheels, they have wenches that the gripman uses to grab a cable under the street like a big pair of pliers and that pulls it around. The conductors main duty is watch for people getting on and off and check for safety, and take fair. Here is a tip from a local: if you are riding alone or with one person maybe on the Powell lines, don't wait in line at the turn station as you will be in line for up to an hour. Walk up 2 blocks to the first stop. They usually have room for 1 or 2 people when they get there and you can grab on and only wait 15 minutes. read more

For tourists it is a preferred mode of transportation to get you from one stop to the next. It is the only moving landmark. I would imagine this would be more affordable to locals that do not want to deal with car and parking expenses. Just so everyone showers first, of course. They do get crowded. Andrew Hallidie, an immigrant from Great Britain, witnessed a heavy street car being pulled by a team of horses up a steep hill. One horse lost it's footing and the horses and the car slid back down the long hill. Needing to change this mode of transportation he invented San Francisco's cable cars. Today they are the last of permanent cable car transportation in the world. I've watched too many movies where they ran and jumped on to the running boards, while the Trolley was moving. My entourage had to hold me back from attempting this great feat. Damn, maybe next time. I did get to stand on the running boards, so there. I'm sorry, but I had higher expectations for you. Especially since people generally think "trolleys" and "cable cars" when they think about San Francisco. The bf and I had no problem getting ON to the trolley at the Civic Center(?). My biggest mistake was telling the bf I wanted to get off at Lombard to look at the famous road and go down & come back up. Because after that, we weren't able to get back onto a trolley. The bf and I waited at a trolley stop for 30 minutes. Which is nothing compared to the guy and his gf who had already waited 50 mins before we got there. Four cable cars had gone by without stopping, and none were full. He had called the city twice to complain. The only advice? "Make sure you wave them down." I am willing to testify that this stranger HAD in fact, waved the trolley down. Unfortunately, they breezed by as if we didn't exist at all. (And we were only at the stop after the first stop at Fisherman's Wharf/Embarcadero!) The last time the guy called, all the city could say was, "We're sorry." Yeah, whatever. The bf and I ended up taking a cab back to the BART (We could have taken it back to the hotel, but we still had money left on our tickets that I wanted to use on our last day there. Besides, our hotel was only a block away from the BART). It cost the same as the trolley ride back (including tip). $6 for one-way, $14 for round-trip. Take at your own risk. read more
