The food at Shaddy's is sublime! It not only feeds the body, but also the soul. You leave feeling as though you've eaten a true home cooked meal. So many delicate flavours and contrasting textures in my falafel wrap. Everything is freshly made with fresh ingredients. A rarity when eating out. A true find and lovely service! This place seemed super weird at first, but it turned out to be decent. From the outside I couldn't tell that it was a strange combination of Persian-Mediterranean-Canadian cuisine, but my celiac friend wanted to eat here because they advertised a gluten-free menu. (Most of the gluten-free offerings turned out to be wheat-free anyway, like seafood, but it was a nice gesture.) I ordered fish and chips, and my friend had mussels for an appetizer and a cheeseburger (without the bun) and a baked potato. Our food was just fine--in fact, my fish was better than what I had had earlier in the week at a seafood restaurant. My friend was happy with her mussels and burger, and the waiter was friendly, helpful, and pleasant to deal with. (We were also the only customers in the restaurant, so it's not like he was very busy.) Once I got past the strange hybrid menu and the surprising decor (lots of potted plants on the floor--bromeliad-looking things), I enjoyed a perfectly solid dinner for a reasonable price. read more

Very disappointed with this restaurant. Although the service was friendly and timely, the food was not up to expectations. We chose the Shish-Taouk advertised as "sliced chicken breast off our upright broilers", for $20 each. The chicken was shaved and the amount was worth at best $10 per plate. Have had shish taouk in other cities and always very good, this Charlottetown restaurant won't be on our radar in the future. read more

We were in town and looking for an alternative to pub food, which is ubiquitous in Charlottetown. Shaddy's advertises itself as a Mediterranean place so we thought we'd give it a try. You certainly won't be escaping pub food here - they've got a full selection including fish and chips, burgers and seafood chowder - but you will find some worthy alternatives. My friend and I each ate an appetizer-sized plate of falafel which were great. Well seasoned and fried to perfection. Each was served with a tiny pile of mixed greens and pickled vegetables. Her chowder was on the bland side, but not too bad. Service was friendly and prompt, and we didn't pay too much. All in all a good spot in a somewhat culinarily limited town. read more

I recently visited this establishment with a good sized group, more than five people. We each had a different entree and shared an appetizer. While the decor was on par with other Lebanese restaurants, all any of us could truly recommend for food or beverage was the water sans ice. I would be very surprised to see this restaurant open past the upcoming tourist season. read more

When my wife and I found ourselves looking for a quick dinner on early on in the week when fewer restos are open, we made our way over to Maple Cedar. Having come from Ottawa, which in addition to being the national capital of the country is also the shawarma capital, it was a bit weird how few shawarma places there are in the area. The menu leans in a mostly traditional Middle Eastern direction, although they do have pizza, donairs and garlic fingers too. We went with the shawarma ($15) and falafel platters ($15) for dine-in. It was nice to see a flow of customers, despite it being a Tuesday, and our food was in front of us in good time. My shawarma platter had thick pieces of chicken on top of a bed of savoury rice. I would have liked to see a mix of white and dark meat and some crispy bits, but it still had a nice, rich flavour and was moist and tender. Of note, the garlic sauce had more of a aioli-like texture than toum normally does. It tasted fine, but this would anger Lebanese friends of mine. The falafel platter had a generous serving of eight of the crispy chickpea fritters. The platter's composition made it a sort of build-your-own wrap, with sides of tomato, shredded romaine, pickled turnip and tahini with pita. We found the tahini a bit bland, but the falafel were spot on and not at all greasy. A container of baklava ($10) that we took home was flaky, savoury and sweet, and had the most noticeable flavour of orange/rose water I've ever had in baklava. On a return visit, I went for something quick and easy to-go, the large shawarma wrap ($11). After a short wait after a few others, I had my shawarma and classily ate in my car. It had a lovely and crisp exterior from the griddle/sandwich press, plus more traditional ingredients than most shawarma places - chicken, toum, pickled turnips and the clincher - fries. No salad in these bad boys! If they had a better toum, it would be a front runner for the best shawarma wrap that I've had in the province. Maple Cedar may have a broad menu to appeal to a smaller customer base that's less familiar with Middle Eastern food than big markets, but they're still doing right by their culinary origins.

We met Shaddy at the Charlottetown Farmer's Market in 2010 and have been back more times than I can count. We make the trip from Boston to enjoy their amazing, authentic Middle Eastern cuisine.
