Pure Barre in Homewood is my go to spot and I like how it's very cutesy, very mindful, very demure :) The instructors make sure to learn your name before class and do a great job at helping you adjust your form to get the intended impact of each move. They're also good and shouting people out throughout class to help keep us motivated. I've tired both the classic class and define classes. The classics kick my butt the most but define isn't far behind. I like how each class is different and helps you get stronger in different ways. I honestly hate the idea of sweating and intentionally being in pain, so I motivate myself with cute outfits and post workout treats, like a smoothie from Farm Bowl. I feel like I get my money's worth every single workout and I can feel myself getting stronger each time. I can now hold a 30 second plank and use the weights much more easily, but it took awhile and I still have plenty of room to grow. Bonus points for the friendly, girl power environment!

But there comes a time when you just need to mix it up and try something different. And when it was Luan heading it up, you know when it comes to the cutting edge of fitness in Bham, he is the man and so follow him I did and I am so glad I did!!! There is a "cross-fit" aspect to the conditioning workouts, although with a definite twist. Everyday is not a 1,2,3 go and hit your redline. You actually spend time during the week working on positioning and form. There is one day focusing on active recovery. Some days they will throw in steel maces which are so much fun and beyond challenging. It's all about the whole body, including what you put in your body as well. To top things off, during every class time, there is a simultaneous class running in strength training and Olympic weightlifting. Because its not all about conditioning, but all recent studies in fitness and keeping your body in top condition is including strength training. And with Luan at the helm who has devoted his career in the fitness world to the study of Olympic weight training, this is the real deal. And don't be afraid if you have never done it. The trainers are there to work your through and make sure your form and movement is where it should be. WH has even formed an Olympic weightlifting team that has been competing around the southeast and doing really well. But not only do you get top equipment and instruction, the community is one of the best I have ever been associated with. Encouraging, open, caring and just people you want to hang with. You really do end of feeling it is your home away from home. The people of WH are here to help you succeed, reach for your best self, and make sure you do it safely. No other gym I know of has the same level of professional and intentional coaches and staff. They have gone to great lengths to make the gym both as useful and accessible to as many people as possible. For example, there are regular class options for those who want to be apart of a class, there are drop-in options, and they now have open gym option for people who just want to use the facility to train on their own. Not to mention if you pay for regular classes, you also have open gym access whenever the doors are open. Suffice it to say that if you're looking for an awesome gym in Birmingham, chances are high WHA will meet your needs. Lastly but also importantly, the facility and equipment are top of the line and competition-ready. The strength class uses the Rogue Olympic Weightlifting barbells and plates, and the conditioning side has Concept2 rowers, SkiErg, and Assault AirBikes in addition to also having more Rogue barbells, plates, and dumbbells as well. So much more to say, but Wheelhouse is an easy 5 stars!

I had to wait for both the tanning bed and the massage bed to be programmed and start, when normally they're up and ready by the time I get to them. There have been a few times I've had to Inform the staff that their bottles of cleaner were empty,. This shouldn't be the case if they're just standing or sitting around playing on their phones. As I left, neither one of them looked up from their phones to give their usual "have a good day" or whatever. I've cancelled my membership. Partly because I haven't been using it enough. But also, this the location that is most convenient to me and the service is lacking

The women's sauna is constantly broken or smells like sewage, and it's been that way long enough that it's clearly not a priority to fix. They also completely erased a huge part of the club's community when they removed the basketball courts. That space brought people together, and replacing it with indoor pickleball--without asking members--says everything about how decisions are made here. Most of the events are geared toward the senior population, so calling this place an "athletic country club" feels misleading. And the last‑minute changes to heated classes, suddenly moving them outdoors when it's 60 degrees and cloudy, make no sense. It feels like they're sacrificing quality just to squeeze in more bodies. It was heartbreaking to lose the cycle classes as that was the only community I had been able to build there. When the gym is crowded, it's barely usable. I've seen the saunas so packed that people are standing shoulder to shoulder. It's uncomfortable and defeats the purpose entirely. And while most of the staff are friendly, it's hard not to notice that some employees show up smelling like weed, which doesn't exactly match the "premium" image they're trying to sell.

They have childcare and even a cafe with healthy offerings (one inside and one by the outdoor pool for summer days). They also offer towels, lockers, shampoo, razors, etc, , personal training, small group training and educational programs. I have participated and taken advantage of all of these services and amenities, at some point. It's the nicest health and wellness facility in Business, and prices are reflective of this fact. It's worth every penny if you are able to take advantage of offerings. Unfortunately, the sauna and steam room are often closed, in need of repair and classes require advanced reservations and fill up quickly.
