Very busy on a Saturday morning with many choices of fresh veggies, baked items, frozen to go foods, and a deli area. We purchased a reduced porridge bread which would be used as toast so freshness was not an issue. Another purchase were some huge mushrooms. There is definitely something for everyone. read more

I'm not sure if this is an expansion of Echo Hill's empire, a family splinter group, or just more Mennonites seizing opportunity, but anyway, it is absolutely worthy of a stop. The strong game here is the bakery. Yes, there's shoofly, but there's any funny cake- and I don't think I've ever seen that sold commercially (but we bake it at home). Whoopies? Hellz yes. And best of all, fasnachts for the Lenten season. If you don't know, fasnachts are a PA dutch tradition, a type of cruller or doughnut that feels like it's typically made of lead. Here, they're actually pillowy soft. Not what my traditionalist spouse endorses, but my stomach is grateful for the upgrade. Also a ton of prepared meals to go - check it out! read more

I stopped in (pre-Covid) to check out Shady Mountain because I was curious about this place after having seen its ad in a publication several years ago, somewhere along the way. The market is located out in the country and is a bit of a drive to get there. The market itself looks charming from the outside. Inside is a little cramped if you have more than 6 or 7 customers, which seems to be ongoing during the time we were there. Shopping carts are very limited too, so first come, first served. I was impressed with the reasonably priced deli items for meats and cheeses and picked up a few pounds of cheese while there. I also bought some produce, a few baked goods, several small sized frozen casserole dinners, homemade mint tea, and a pretzel. The employees were very nice, helpful, and polite. We enjoyed the tea and the pretzel was ok, but I'm not a big fan of the casseroles. To me, they were okay, but I thought they lacked some flavor, and could be improved with a little more meat and spices. On another online site, these casseroles are a huge hit with local customers, so it might just be me and my expectations. Don't let that stop you from trying them as they do have a nice variety with something that may suit your tastes. The baked goods were ok, but I am very picky about fruit pies and not a fan for pie filling. Having said that, most central PA people would enjoy these pies. As for the sweet rolls, we enjoyed them and thought they were good. If I am in the area again some time, I might consider stopping in to check out their variety of items. Once again, nice people, decent selection, and good prices. Check it out for yourself. read more
