It's always an amazing experience when I take my dog to Shaffer Animal Hospital! I have a senior pup who comes yearly for bloodwork and vaccines, and the staff at Shaffer's always make it as stress free as possible for her. We usually see Dr. Kelsey Smith as Tiki had a good experience with her the first time we saw her, so we always request her through the app when we book appointments to keep things consistent. Both Dr. Smith and all the techs we see give my Tiki so much love between the scary parts of the visit that she still gets excited to get out of the car and get inside. Our daughter's took her our dog in for an allergy and they told my daughter's that someone would be back to handle the billing. They came out of the room into the main area several times after waiting 40 minutes to find it empty. When they finally saw someone they told them to wait in the room and someone would be there shortly. Obviously they didn't communicate and went on their lunch break leaving the customer and their dog waiting for nearly 90 minutes. Time to find another veterinarian. read more

We have been bringing our dogs, Mitzi and Lola, here for at least 5 years now and couldn't be happier. Previously we went to another vet in Altamonte and felt like they were indifferent to out animals, Shaffer on the other hand has been nothing but welcoming and seem to have a general concern everytime we come in. How do I begin? The staff is very kind and cordial. Always a smile on the face and a good waiting area. They even have a place for the kiddos to hangout while you are waiting. I've never been in the waiting room more than 15 minutes before we make it to the examination room. Once in the examination room the doctors are super cool. Dr. Gerrish is really THE dog whisperer. She is so cool and makes every effort to make sure the experience is good. She also makes sure you get the right treatment applicable to your situation; not just what's the most profitable. Many times we have walked out with a bill that was much lower than expected. Went online to request an appointment for one of my dogs.   After 2 days, I have not received a phone call, text or email.  Absolutely nothing!!!  I have a total of 7 pets that require yearly visits to the vet for shots and medication.  I spend over $2000.00 a year in basic vet expenses.  Then add emergency visits. This is the second Vet in Oviedo that has ignored my request for an appointment.  This review will also show up under their business name since I contacted both on the same day and received no reply. Since I moved to Oviedo 8 years ago, I have always tried to support local small businesses.  Each time, businesses in this town don't return phone calls or show up as promised.  I don't understand, if you have enough money and don't want more business, than say so on your web page.  Here, try this, "Hey I'm rich and don't need you".   I understand as a business you might be busy, but I work retail and am too.  It takes 2 minutes to send an email to reply to someone.  Common courtesy seems to have died in this town. read more

Shaffer is by far the best animal hospital around. Everyone, from the veterinarians to the front desk, are caring. They go above and beyond. Early last year, my dog had a questionable polyp. Dr. Patel was able to refer me to a specialist who removed it, and it turned out to be cancerous. All my follow up visits have been at Shaffer, every 3 months. Dr Patel takes her time to give Sully a thorough exam and she is extremely gentle and caring with him. He is not afraid to come to the vet's office because they give him lots of love (and treats) to comfort him. My dog is my family and I wouldn't trust him with anyone else. read more

I called today to kindly receive an estimate for how much a teeth cleaning would be on my 7 pound Min pin, since I drove by and saw their sign about February being Dental health month, and discounts being available. well.. as soon as I said I never had been there before, the girl who picked up the phone informed me that she was unable to give me an estimate. All she could tell me is it would be 62 for the initial required visit, and anywhere from 80-140 for blood work and whatever else. Ok, fine, no biggie. but what really bites is that I asked for a third time if she could give me even a BALLPARK price, like, $500-$1000 ? but she couldn't even give me that. I wanted to compare to another vet I was considering for the procedure, but the girl wouldn't budge and said that it depended on what the vets find at the initial exam. lol, like WHAT. It's a freaking dental cleaning that you PROMOTED outside of your office and you're not even going to give me a ROUGH ESTIMATE ?? I called Aloma Jancy and the lady was not only super friendly and helpful, but she told me exactly how much the price would be, which came out to be the price of Shaffer's initial exam and blood work ALONE, without the cleaning itself. Aloma Jancy's price DOES NOT depend on ... whatever Shaffer's price depends on. It's a flat rate. (this is where you people lose business) I wasn't looking for a bargain, i was willing to pay upwards of $400, but since you people apparently make new clients pay $62 initial exam fee just for a QUOTE, i'm not surprised you don't have more business. let that sink in.... "oh, want a quote? that'll be $62 please). PISS OFF. there's enough careless vet's out there, and this one is clearly in it for the business. I recently had to put down my BEST FRIND of 18 years, Brody a Jack Russell Terrier who I loved dearly. He has been through many tough times with me especially in the past 8 years. He was with me all the time and always made me smile and feel warm inside. I have been bringing Brody on and off to Shaffer as I move a lot for business. I recently moved back to Oviedo and knew it was Brodys time, so I went in to Shaffer for what I called counseling. They, especially Debbie, were all sooo nice to me and helped me to understand the procedures to put Brody to rest. It was very hard for me as many of you may already understand. Putting to rest such a beloved dog to me, my family and many of my friends was going to be one of the toughest experiences I have ever had to do. )-; I gave Brody his last meal in the back of my SUV (in the back of the Vet. Parking lot) a treat of McDonald's plain hamburger which he enjoyed very much! Then they told me they were ready for me and Brody. This is actually an update from my previous reviews. I never heard back from Shaffer -- BUT -- apparently they DID run the urine analysis on the sample they told me they were discarding. So credit where it is due. I only became aware of this when Seminole Trail Animal Hospital (STAH) requested records. So GOOD for Shaffer running the tests - but BAD for them never notifying me. As for my experience with the new vet (STAH), a much (MUCH!) better experience. Not only did we discuss a wide range of possibly causes for Lucy's condition and arrive at a multi-stage course of therapy, the cost was a fraction of the cost at Shaffer and NO PRESSURE to buy expensive "add ons" and NO additional costs without informing me and getting approval. I've ended my business with this vet. I've been there a few times for teeth cleanings and check ups, but the last straw was my dogs leg problem. Basically, they will try to sell you overpriced stuff you don't even need, or may not be that necessary. My dog was limping one day and I rushed her to the vet to be told by Shaffer she had a torn ligament and it would require surgery of about 1,500-2,000 by a specialist. Now, my baby is worth anything, and I'm no doctor, but I'm not sure how he could tell she had a torn ligament without any Xrays or anything. I decided to take my dog to another vet for a second opinion, but had to make an appt for the next day. That night the dog was walking fine-she had a shard of an acorn or something jammed between her paw pads-being why she wouldn't walk on it. Shame on me for not inspecting closer-but shame on that vet too. F. Oh, and I wasn't seen till 35 minutes after my appt time. Update: To this day, my dog has never had any problems again with her leg. The vet's staff also never called once to check in on my dog who needed "prompt surgery" because she was in "so much pain". read more

Take your animals elsewhere!!! This place needs to take lessons in customer service and read a book on How To Run A Business. They have ZERO regards for your time and appointments made. I used to (will never again) take my four legged family members there. The vets don't talk to each so one tells you one thing and the other states the total opposite. Made an appointment and after waiting 20 minutes for someone to come outside and speak to us, because they still are not allowing anyone inside because someone might bring covid inside with them. I was told they gave me the wrong information on the time that my dog was able to eat before the procedure, so she could not be seen today. After asking them 3 times on the phone to verify this since it was different than what we were told the last time for the same exact procedure. So, after I arranged my work schedule so I could bring her, but that just didn't matter to Vet Patel. They need to realize they are NOT the only vet in town. I took my dog here who blew oUt her knee she was 13. I was told she would be better euthanized however I regret listening . to them and not getting a second opinion . I watched my dog struggle being put down and it was horrific. I have had many animals put down and never have I seen this they kept showing me multiple things to raise bill that weren't needed and only cared about making the most money vs what the dogs really needed. My 2nd emergency visit with 2 different pets within 16 months & I would definitely recommend their services .

I had a very positive experience here. (See last paragraph for short version) On September 11, 2014, I accidentally closed a van door on my dogs muzzle as she attempted to jump in. It was a sliding door which was closing pretty hard. She is a small 14 pound dog so I immediately began to panic thinking I killed her or broke her jaw once I saw all the blood. This happened at about 4:40 PM and I was admittedly tired and already overwhelmed as I had just gotten home from the airport after being out of state to care for my grandfather in hospital. Because I typically take my pets to pet alliance for vaccinations and services, I have no relationship with a specific vet that I can call in an emergency. Luckily, Shaffer's was right down the road and they told me I could come in despite them closing soon at 5:30 PM and me being an emergency. When I got there, one of the front desk girls immediately opened the door for me when she saw me coming with my dog wrapped in a towel. They took Lulu and began to check her as I filled out the paperwork in the front. The staff gave me water and tissues when they saw the condition I was in. About 5 minutes later I was called back to give the information on her vaccinations and last procedures. Then the vet came out to explain what she believed and to ask about X-rays. I want to stress that the doctor was trying to comfort me the whole time by explaining very clearly what she believed was wrong. She let me know that it was mostly a small fracture and that she would be ok and compared it to a human injury (nose fracture) so that I could understand it better. Before this I could not stop crying because my pets are everything to me. They did the X-rays, which showed the doctor was correct, and then gave me the medication she would need for pain and inflammation. They didn't try to sell me other services, food or anything like some other places have. Plus they were surprisingly inexpensive for having been an emergency visit, getting 2 shots (antibiotics and inflammation), medicine, and 2 cans of soft food to start me off on for her soft food diet she needed to be on. I'm talking less than $260. When I took my cockatiel to the vet for an emergency it ended up being $450 (no X-rays and just got medicine) and up so that's what I was expecting. My only complaint for why they didn't get 5 stars is because they said they would call me the next day but did not. TL;DR? Great place, staff and service. They take care of your pets AND you by giving superb explanations on your pets condition. Not expensive and they have a really handsome cat receptionist. Wish they would have given me a check in call like promise but I can always call if something's wrong anyway. Highly recommend!!! read more

Wife loves this vet, especially after a former vet killed one of our dogs. Our dogs stay here when we take trips and they don't seem too upset which tells us that they feel alwright here. We have even had this office send us pictures of our kids when we are on a longer trip missing them. We have had to walk three dogs across the rainbow bridge here over time. Two of our own and a rescue. As hard as that is we were treated with respect and they tried to make the situation as comfortable as possible. We still regularly bring our dogs and rescues here for treatment and kennel. read more

I never write reviews about places but I made a yelp account just so I could write a review for Shaffer Animal Hospital. I brought my puppy in last Friday because she wasn't walking on her back leg. I was told that they were completely booked but they wanted to take her in the back to check her vitals just to make sure she was okay. I think the vets realized how serious my pup's injury was and they moved me into a room immediately to continue her examination. As she was in the back the staff CONSTANTLY checked in on me because I was a wreck and could not stop crying. I mean at least every 10 minutes someone walked in to check on me. She ended up needing surgery on her leg. They called AVS, made the appointment for me and gave me everything I needed for AVS and I was on my way. They took such great care of me and my fur baby. They are the most caring animal hospital I have ever been to. I fully trust their staff and I will never go to another animal hospital ever again. Thank you Shaffer Animal Hospital! I love this place! I recommend it to every pet lover I know. The doctors are extremely caring and helpful - yes, even the young vets. The staff is professional and sweet. I am shocked that anyone would write a negative review. I think the part of the negative review that bothers me the most is the comments on ethics. I have found the doctors and staff EXTREMELY ethical, professional, caring, humane, and fair. I have been a client since 1999. I found the Shaffers through a recommendation from an animal rescue. At first I only had my ferrets as patients because Dr. Jeff is an expert on ferret health. Over the years, I have had advice from all of the doctors who have worked in this practice. Between the time I found the Shaffers until about 2003, I would bring my cat and dogs to various closer veterinary practices because they were located closer to my home. In 2003, I decided to move all my animals records to Shaffer's because I felt I was wasting time and money at other practices. I moved all of my pet's records because the vets at Shaffers were extremely fair in their approach to medicine. I get advice in how to make my pet's health better for a long healthy life. I never feel pushed in a direction that is unfair to my animal. I always feel like I have the information to move forward in a positive direction that maximizes healthy years, and in times of disease, helps minimize suffering. The doctors always give good options for treatment and are honest with what can happen with the choices. I am ultimately the one who makes the choice based on an educated decision. I feel I can genuinely trust that I am getting good advice. I am someone who will pay for a second opinion if I feel like a need one. The technology available in their office is top notch. The vets have always been willing to review X-rays with me and explain the diagnosis. The vets will also recommend specialists if they feel that is the best option for my pet. I have brought in my dogs, cats and ferrets. I have also brought a couple rescued animals in over the years. I feel giving excellent veterinary care to my animals is part of being an excellent pet owner. Part of any excellent health care is having the options presented and explained, and then the patient/family to make the best decision based on many different factors. read more

My husband and I have used Shaffer for a few years now for our 3 fur babies and we were very sad to move to Atlanta and find a new vet. We came to Shaffer after having a terrible experience with Banfield and couldn't believe the difference in customer service and quality of care for our pups! We had a very bad experience with Dr. Molly Jette at Shaffer Animal Hospital last year. Our puppy was vomiting for a few days. Instead of giving the puppy right medicines, she kept telling us that he needed a surgery. Although she cannot see any thing in his stomach from x-ray, she told us it could be something stuck and hide in the narrow area of his abdomen. We trusted her, however the vomiting didn't stop at all after the surgery and it cost us $1500 in total! Another doctor at Shaffer gave my puppy some medicines and he was recovered in two days. We were very upset about the unnecessary surgery, we felt that Dr. Jette didn't care about the puppy's health she just push us to do the expensive surgery. I recently had to have my fur baby, Snuggles, put down. It has been 5 days and I still cry at the drop of a hat. Dr. Patel at Shaffer was the most compassionate vet during the procedure. I held my baby to the end and Dr. Patel allowed me time alone with Snuggles before I left. Yesterday, 6/25, I got the call his ashes were there. Another bad day for me but the staff member who checked me out was another caring person. I can't say enough good things about this vet. We have been going to Shaffer Animal Hospital for approximately 3 years with our two Boston Terriers. Just general checkups..no big issues with our dogs. However, last week our 10 year old Boston Terrier was in bad shape and I took her to Shaffer. Upon arrival, they took Chloe from me almost immediately and started to treat her. Dr Kovacs was concerned in Chloe's treatment and in making her comfortable. Before the day was over, my husband and I decided to put Chloe down. It was the hardest decision we ever had to make but Dr Kovacs and staff were super supportive (a sweet vet tech even brought Chloe some snacks before hand, which Chloe...as sick as she was, gobbled up.) We arranged for cremation with Shaffer and we picked up her ashes yesterday. Debbie (at the front desk) was so nice and sympathetic. We were very pleased with the cremation box we had purchased and the timely manner in which we had gotten Chloe's ashes back. It's devastating to lose your four legged family member but the staff at Shaffer made it easier to deal with. read more

I have an 11 year old yorkie and have been going to Shaffer Animal Hospital for a very long time, mostly because it was conveniently located & I just did not feel like going through the whole hassle of changing vets. I have always thought they were a little pricey, however after getting a $700.00 quote for a dental cleaning decided it was time to make a change. After some research and reading many reviews I decided to try Winter Springs Veterinary Clinic at 131 W State Road 434 in Winter Springs and I am so glad I did. Not only is the staff there wonderful, I feel like Dr. Morales really cared about my pet and my concerns, AND the dental cleaning (including anesthesia, extractions, and antibiotics) cost us only $160.00. I highly recommend Winter Springs Veterinary Clinic! Will not be going back to Shaffer Animal Hospital. read more
