I managed to track down My Nawaab and it was far better than my already fond recollection They have perhaps the broadest range of Pakistani and South Asian Cuisine I've ever seen. The service is top notch and I cannot herald the staff enough for their warmth and friendliness. As a stranger on my own, I was made to feel so at home. As a huge bonus, they have my absolute favourite dessert in the world, Oymali, which I last had in Cairo. As a grand finale when I returned for a second night in a row before driving onward to York, they personally made sure that I had a helping of faluda. I do hope to come back again and a special thanks to the wonderfully lovely staff at My Nawaab.

Khan's - Saag dhal, £3 with two roti.

For my purposes, as a curry café, Khan's ranks as one of the best food places I've ever eaten in…read more Khan's is a basic-looking takeaway with seating for about a dozen customers. What drew me in was their advertisment '4 roti or naan for £1'. Reading the menu, it became clear that Khan's has a decent curry selection, including six or so vegetarian curries. The owner is really friendly, and on confirming that their saag dhal features fresh spinach (not that common even in smart Indian/Pakistani restaurants) with roti made fresh to order, I knew I had found a good place which would feature highly on my Curry Cafés of Manchester list. Khan's prices are unbeatable - saag dhal with 2 roti or rice comes to just £3.00! Other vegetable curries include bhindi or mixed veg. They have some curries ready to serve from a small bain marie, but the veg for my saag dhal was cooked fresh to order with chana dhal. I asked for just a bit of chili but for me it was still fairly hot, so I would suggest a cautious approach in ordering if you don't like too much heat. They are quite happy to leave out the chili if you don't want it - one of the pluses of food being cooked to order and therefore made to your individual taste. The saag dhal portion was enough for me, with the freshness of the veg and the spicy flavours hitting the spot. The roti are large-sized, well-cooked but soft. Khan's is set up quite professionally for flatbreads with both dough rolling and automatic roti machines. Also, if you looking for a regular takeaway in this area for pizza, curry or whatever, I can't speak for the rest of the menu but Khan's is cheap as chips (12" Margherita £3.50) and therefore worth checking out. I like Khan's enough that I would make the trip from central Manchester just to eat here, especially given how cheap, fast and frequent the train service is from Piccadilly - at 8 minutes and under £2 for a return ticket it is easy reached. The freshness, cheapness and tasty authenticity of the food, plus the friendliness of the owner are the draws for me. Plus, Levenshulme is like a big Aladdin's cave with all the architectural salvage shops and so on, offering plenty of interesting doorways to duck inside if time allows.

Anyway the part that surprised me most was when I ordered the Qabily Pilau dish. Besmati rice with lamb and a side tub of lentil Dahl came to only £3.50. I actually asked the counter staff if it had meat in it or just vege. He assured me it had lamb in the dish. #TG Service was quick n they seemed very busy with three cooks on and delivery drivers in and out of the shop. My food came in a decent sized potion and there indeed were tender cubes of lamb in my pilau. The lentil Dahl could have been cooked a little longer but apart from that the meal was fairly decent. For such a smashing price I'm not complaining. Will definately be back to check out other parts of the menu.

"We quietly opened it 5 months ago and have been slowly building the business". They're currently only open 8-10pm due to Ramadan commitments. Something which must be costing them given the expensive traditional tandoori ovens there got installed. What it does show is that they're passionate about the authenticity of the food and see this place as a long term investment. They're here to stay folks! The chicken and lamb Karahi is cooked on the tandoor "Pathan style" with plethora of spices and takes 15 minutes to cook. My first venture was however all about the legendary Chapli kebabs and Peshawari naans! I first tried this huge spice filled meat fest at a wedding in London. They're a delicacy in North Pakistan area of Pakhtun and Waziristan as well as Afghanistan. The richness of flavour absorbed in the meat is incredible and the naan breads served with it are soft, delicious and rather large. I can't wait to return and try the rice dish and update my review! Just as me and my other Whitworth-Park dwelling friends would stop off at Adbuls or Gemini after a night out, he would never fail to stop at Saajan. Fast-forward 5 years. Single male student is still a student, but now, like many mature students has emigrated south to Didsbury. He still has a penchant for fast food, but not many residents of Didsbury share his fondness, therefore he was most upset when he found out that there are no late night kebab houses in Didsbury. So the resolution to this problem is that after a night out in town, he simply gets off the bus in Fallowfield, purchases his Saajan kebab and gets back onto the bus to Didsbury feeling content. It's very rare for such an establishment to survive for so long without even the slightest hint of a rumour about cockroaches, rats or gross staff (a la Abduls and Gemini) to tarnish its reputation, so Saajan must be good. My friend is also generally very lazy, meaning that Saajan must be damn good.

The fact you could stuff yourself with deliciously saucy and spicy meat and salad on a bit flat bread for £3 was just brilliant. And I genuinely always liked the taste of all three meats: chicken, lamb and shish. I managed to have a perfectly time opportunity and excuse to go last week after probably about 4 years. I went for lamb. Problem is, and I knew this before, a kebab doesn't travel too well. Before I was only living 5 minutes away but now it had to cope with a 20 mins drive so the bread was saggy and the meat a bit cold. Nothing to do with the Sajaan guys however. My main criticism would be about the quality of the meat. I think it went downhill as my lamb was chewy and full of nerves. I still like the flavours but despite the fact the price has gone up (£3.80 now which is not that exorbitant for a full meal) the meat is not as good as it used to be. Would happily go back for the chicken or shish, hopefully in the near future though.

Situated along the illustrious curry mile, a mile-long stretch lined almost solely with Indian restaurants and Kebab shops, The Village escaped my attention until recently. I think its English name subconsciously made me think it would be less authentic than the more originally named options. However, I couldn't have been more wrong. The Village is a Pakistani restaurant that opened with the aim of providing high quality authentic Pakistani cuisine from the Lahore region, something it felt Manchester was lacking. Experienced and talented chefs prepare all the beautiful food, supervised by the "King of Chefs", Ashraf. They have an incredible 5-course deal for £7.50. It isn't really 5 courses, as naan and rice both count as a course, but it is a great value for money deal. You get popadoms with all the sauces (including a spicy yoghurt one I've never seen before) followed by either Seekh Kebab or Onion Bhajis, then any curry of your choice with both rice and naan, and a coffee to finish, all for £7.50! Remember to keep hold of the sauces from the popadoms as the chilli yoghurt compliments a Seekh Kebab perfectly. The fish curries are excellent and can be had with any sauce. They also do a range of deserts including some exciting ice cream flavours. The staff are charming, particularly one large bubbly joker, who makes a string of (genuinely) funny jokes whilst taking your order and delivering your food. Service is fast, but not rushed, and you'd happily sit there for an evening.
