Do not do business with these guys. Baker Painting was hired to paint three sides of a two-story,…read morewooden commercial/residential building in Grand Marais, Michigan, constructed in 1883. I was looking for someone who would pay attention to detail to restore this building to her former glory. What I got was a hack job, that went way past the deadline to complete the job and a faulty paint job with rusty nails staining the entire building. They claim to warranty their work. They do not. In fact, they will not even return a phone call or email if you call to complain. Stay away from these guys. This is a father/son operation. The old man, Albert, is the front man/con man. He will look you in the eye and promise you what you want to hear. He is a smooth talker. Do not fall for it. There are a lot of reasons I would not recommend Baker's Painting of Cedarville, Michigan. The biggest reason is they cut corners and don't guarantee their work. They failed to properly prime the old nails on my building and the rust immediately bled through the paint as early as the day they finished the job. With as many years at they have in the business, they knew they needed to properly apply a non-water based rust inhibiting primer on all the nail heads to prevent them from bleeding through, but they did not. As a result, the paint job is a complete loss. I had hired another company seven years earlier. The properly primed all the nails and that paint job is holding up well eight years later on the one side not painted by Baker's Painting. So, I know that the technique and simple technology exists to avoid this problem. Baker paint simply thought they could cut corners and that the nails would not bleed through so quickly. They were wrong. I, unfortunately, was not able to be on the job site the days they were doing the priming, otherwise, I would have caught the problem. The day I did the final walk through with John Baker, I pointed out the rust already coming through. He side-stepped the question and said this was natural. I knew it was not. I spoke with his father, the boss, and he said he would come out and look at it. He never did. From then on they never returned phone calls or emails. Wanting to uphold my end of the deal, I mistakenly paid for the job before they resolved the issue. I will not make this mistake again. I trusted them and they let me down. I should have known something was amiss with these guys when they showed up at week later than their agreed upon start date of June 16, 2014. I even provided free housing for them, since they were from about two hours from here. Once they started the job, they frequently would not show up stating "rain was forecasted." Then of course, it would not rain. What was going on was they had multiple jobs going on at the same time and they were just leading people along. Albert said he estimated the job to take 10 days. It was completed on July 18, two days past a month from when it was suppose to be completed. I kept saying it never rained on those days and Albert would say, "I have to be able to guarantee my work." Well, that's the biggest joke. They do not guarantee their work. Another scam Albert employs is part way through the job he will express that he underestimated the job and looking for sympathy will ask for more money. DO NOT fall for this. If you are considering hiring Baker's Painting, I invite you to come look at the paint job they did on my building at 14281 Campbell Street, Grand Marais, Michigan. It's easy to find. It houses the Campbell Street Gallery. It's the one with all the rust running down the sides from all the rusty nails and lousy paint job. Avoid disappointment DO NOT hire these guys.
