We brought our two dogs here for the first time last weekend as a trial run for our upcoming vacation. We first did a tour of the facilities, and found them to be very clean and well run. When we walked in, there were not dogs barking wildly at one another as we have seen at other kennels. Each kennel has solid sides so they don't feel threatened by other dogs nearby. The dogs have their own run that during the day the door is lifted so they can go outside. We put our dogs together in one kennel and the owner will separate them during feeding time, so that one is not stealing food or causing problems with the other one. A nice touch! The dogs also will not interact with other dogs during their stay, which is good for us, as one of our dogs does not do well with others. Don is the owner and is very nice and soft-spoken. He seems to have a very gentle way about him. On the phone, he may sound a little standoffish, but when you meet him in person, you realize that it is only his soft-spokeness and he is very friendly. My dogs who are normally anxious around new people did not seem to have that reaction with him at all. Prices are extremely reasonable. Bring your own blankets or dog beds as separate ones are not provided. They do offer additional services such as baths for an additional fee during the dog's stay. Our dogs left there calm, and not stressed at all. I feel extremely comfortable bringing them back for a week during our vacation as I know, they will be in good hands. read more

We adopted Monty this fall. He's a medium sized dog about two years old. Right out of the shelter, he was really "mouthy" and didn't have any doggie manners, plus he has a Very High prey drive. I was pretty nervous to start boarding him, just because of his behavioral issues. Well I'm so glad we tried Shangri-La Kennels! Monty has been there several times now, and we honestly won't go any other place. The owner Don is kind, he really knows dogs, and he runs a clean & safe kennel. He's been flexible and understanding when changes happen in our schedule (we even did an emergency drop-off once without calling ahead). Thank you to Don and Shangri-La Kennels -- not only do you make our lives easier, but Monty loves visiting you. We will be back, for sure. (By the way, Monty doing great. The runs are spacious and very clean. Dogs have individual spaces and are safe in their own private indoor/outdoor runs.

I called Shangri la in APRIL about booking my two dogs in October, owner stated at that time everything was all set that he just needed my vet records. I called him today about vet records and vaccinations and he totally denied I called and stated he never approved it as that time was "blocked" off, not only that but he was totally rude and condescending denying everything! If you can't do it fine, atleast let me know before now and not be a douche about it!! read more

I took my dog here about 3 years ago and have been bothered by my experience since then. The owner had my initial review removed, saying that I was never a client, which makes me pretty mad. I'm giving my review now with more detail to prove I actually had the experience I know I did. I wasn't aware this was training that would use "forceful" techniques. I was instructed to get a chain slip collar that I was instructed to pull back on with both hands forcefully (both hands all the way out holding the leash, then pulled back suddenly to the chest, accompanied by a full step back for momentum) whenever I needed to "correct" my dog when she was pulling on a walk, or when she felt anxious around another dog. The owner would show this "technique" using enough force to swing my dogs body around from the force on her neck. I found this alarming and upsetting. At one point he suggested I go up to a prong collar and obviously I refused. I remember him telling me he was teaching my dog to "respect" me. I went to positive reinforcement training to actually develop a positive relationship with my dog and my dog responded well because positive reinforcement training is actually scientifically proven to be effective. In my opinion, forceful training is at best misinformed, ineffective and cruel. The owner clearly does not want a review like this out there. I'm sure how he responds will be telling. read more

It was a little nerve wracking leaving our 15 year old cat Ezzy for a week just after having an issue with his health Valentine's weekend. I must say I am thankful for Shangri-La kennel taking such great care for Ezzy and being so assuring that he was doing well with taking his meds and his loving affection towards the staff. When arranging our two Great Danes to be boarded the owner informed us we could bring some comforts from home such as a blanket or toy and food. The older more mellow Dane is on just a collar. when he came home from Shanghai-la with matching wounds on both front legs I called to ask if maybe he had been in a different harness? No, he wasn't. So I asked about the bedding. He said you didn't bring any.. if you do not provide any comforts for the animals in your care you need to be extremely clear about communicating that. A simple 'if your dog sleeps in a bed -bring it ' would have avoided my poor boy being abused and having to sleep on concrete . He's a Great Dane it's especially painful for someone of his stature to be compromised that way. I have photos that I am unable to link in the review . His wounds are 2-3 inches wide 4-5 inches long red , seepy, and swollen. When I called to question the wounds I asked if he had noticed them. I saw them right when I laid my eyes on him. So it is also unsettling a dog in care could have two large wounds that could go 'unnoticed'. When mentioning toys and food would have also been the time to mention bedding . I want to avoid this from happening to anyone else's loved one . read more

We have been boarding our 6-year-old Welsh Terrier with Shangri-La since she came to our home as a puppy. She is also groomed and was trained at this facility by the owner. I have read the other reviews on this site and am appalled by their content. Our dog has experienced many health-related issues over the years-including serious allergies, knee surgery, torn CCL and recurrent ear infections. In addition, she is a terrier so her behavior can be challenging. In every instance, she has received the most humane and professional care possible. We can communicate about her needs before she arrives, during her stay and are provided a comprehensive review of her status when we pick her up. Over the years of owning many dogs, we have used many kennels and this is by far the best. I do not believe that reviews should be used to advance an issue without consideration for objectivity around the situation. I know how emotional it can be if your pet is in pain because I have experienced these emotions but projecting the blame on to a business that has a long history of exceptional care is inappropriate, in my view. read more

We have boarded a total of 8 dogs over a period of over 30 years with the folks at Shangri-La kennels and have always felt that we left our beloved pets in the best care possible. Some needed medical attention, some were at advanced ages, and all were as well cared for as they would have been in our own home, perhaps better. After all, the owners background includes the training of Seeing Eye dogs, and local professional dog people refer dogs to them regularly. We feel that the area is lucky to have such a top notch dog care facility, where the owners know what they are doing, and their kennels offer unquestioned safety and comfort to all pets. We haven't needed their grooming help, as our dogs have always been short-haired, but we have observed them grooming dogs with problem coats and conditions, and that care and service was delivered with the same skill as the boarding portion of the business.
