Seeing first hand his ability to create stunning pieces of vastly different sizes, in the early 1990s, I commissioned Jonathan to paint a beautiful mural (an image of the ascent up Flagstaff Mountain) in a restaurant I owned in Boulder (the Creative Café). Years later I commissioned him to draw what turned out to be a wonderful portrayal of Bear Peak (located in Boulder County). In addition to my walls, Jonathan's art hangs in the homes of my siblings and friends. Capturing the essence of his subject, his art never loses its dynamism and originality. Supremely talented, Jonathan is also project oriented; he gets things done regardless of the medium he is working with or the piece's size. I can't recommend this artist enough!

Though a very hot day, we enjoyed the tour. We had heard about this project and living nearby in Boulder we thought it would be fun to do with some friends who were visiting and staying in Lafayette. The Cupcake was a favorite of some as well as the Butterfly made from washers. If we have time on a cooler day, we will try to go back and see the rest of them. As we were leaving the area, we could see a couple more from the car but walking up to them is actually ideal.

Terry Seidel is a sculptor by inclination, an art collector by avocation, an accomplished…read morebusinessman by experience, and a gallerist by chance. Early in his career Terry needed a side gig and, experienced with plaster, decided to start a swimming pool company. Mr. Pool was founded in 1978 and has become the preeminent regional source for custom pool and spa design, construction, and maintenance. Terry was always interested in art and began to use the wall space at Mr. Pool HQ in central Boulder to display art, partly in collaboration with Rule Gallery in Denver. This led to well-attended opening receptions which began to get a little raucous for a residential area. Terry looked for a more isolated space and found it at a foundry in North Boulder in 2016. He started with a small portion of the foundry complex, but eventually took over the whole thing when the foundry folded--thus Seidel City was born. The main building has been remodeled into three large gallery spaces, a sculpture studio, and a residential suite. The Tin Shack, the former foundry, is now a fourth gallery. There's also a stage with space and facilities for musical performances. Art show openings have become a major event, attracting hundreds of people. Terry has spent over 50 years making art, collecting art, and developing deep relationships with a wide variety of significant people in the art world. He consistently puts together shows of national interest. This place is one of Boulder's real hidden gems. There is a fairly extensive Mr. Pool mailing list, but outside of that, Seidel City is rather out of the way and not well-publicized. Terry runs a regular schedule of exhibitions, performances, workshops, and lectures in an environment he calls an art lab. You should seek this mecca out. Seidel City is open by appointment plus public opening receptions for new exhibits.

The NoBo (North Broadway) Art District is Boulder's only official arts district. It dates back to a…read more2009 revival of the First Fridays arts open house tradition and now encompasses more than 350 professional artists and creative businesses--mostly in the North Broadway and Lee Hill corridors. Administrative offices are at the NoBo on the Corner location which also includes work, meeting, and exhibition space. The Bus Stop gallery is a formal exhibition location while the NoBo Art Center is a more casual work, meeting, and exhibition spot. A group of 20 to 30 studios, galleries, and related businesses is open from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the first Friday of every month. There are regular exhibits at the three NoBo gallery spaces (Art Center, Bus Stop, and On the Corner) plus the independent East Window gallery. The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art is planning to construct a large new building plus related facilities at Broadway and Violet Avenue which will be the North Boulder Creative Campus. Construction is estimated to start in late 2027 with completion by late 2029. The Art District is actively working on the streetscape with sculptures, murals, lighting, and other installations in progress. NoBo also curates members' art in local businesses. There's a monthly podcast, a newsletter, a book with member profiles and NoBo information, a calendar of events, and a comprehensive Web site. North Broadway was an underutilized part of town only a few years ago, but is becoming a vibrant area filled with modern housing, new businesses, and a rising arts scene. It should really be impressive over the next few years.
