Eric, Ryan and his entire staff are both excellent instructors and know the Bighole & Beaverhead like the back of their hand. As I now fish over 30 days a year and have experienced numerous guides and outfitters in those outings, Sunrise Fly Shop is who I measure those shops & trips against. And throughout those trips, there is only one other shop (located in Washington state) which rises to the level of customer service and expertise that Sunrise provides. If you want someone to introduce you to flyfishing...they are gentle and patient. If you want numbers...don't be surprised if you need to ice your arm after the trip. We have had days with 40+ in the net. If you want to hunt a 20"/4+ lb. brown trout, they know the secret spots and tactics to make that possible. We've had days where a fish under 20" was "meh." If you want someone to simply break down your faults and get you to be a better caster, they are great instructors adapting their coaching to your coachability. Their diverse staff and excellent skills will put you in the right boat, with the right guide on the right water to make your trip successful and memorable. We've pulled out 25" brown troat from water that looks like a chocolate milkshake and is running at 6x the rivers normal speed. We have slain 20" trout on the Beaverhead in late October when the river is barely moving. We've had amazing days when you have to remove ice from the put in. While the summer days are always special on western rivers, don't discount the fun and success you can have on the shoulder seasons when guided by Sunrise Fly Shop. It's called fishing, not catching, and on those slow days, the staff keeps a positive & hopeful attitude while aggressively trying tactics you didn't know existed to make your day on the water as fun, pleasant and successful as possible. Sunrise is located on some of the most beautiful water in SW Montana and I'd put the Bighole, when guided by Sunrise, as the apex fishery for big browns. If you haven't fished the Bighole, you owe it to yourself to visit! And Sunrise Fly Shop is the team to use to make that investment of time, travel & money produce the highest yield.

Unfortunately, we arrived at the same time as a big heat wave. Water temperatures reached 73 degrees so the trout went into hiding but we had some fun catching whitefish. The next day we fished the Beaverhead with Mika and had a great time. We caught a bunch of browns between 16-21". He knows the river like the back of his hand and predicted where we would find fish. He also gave us a couple good recommendations for spots to fish on our own the next day that helped us get more browns. He's the best guide I've worked with and I will use him again on return trips. My only reason not giving 5 stars is because I wish the shop would have let us know the impact the heat was going to have on the Big Hole and recommended another river. But we still had a great time.

Wow, hands down the WORST dinning experience of my life. We had a table of 5 come in, we all order…read morevery simple breakfast. It took an hour and a half to get 5 plates out. Not only that, when the food did come out; my huevos rancheros was so cold, and the eggs were cooked the wrong way. My friend didn't even eat his ham and cheese omelet because the eggs weren't cooked. Our lady who served us, never came over once to check on us and avoided eye contact the whole time. We didn't even get a reason of why it took so long. The place wasn't even busy, we had 5 tables who came in after us get servered before us. We are in town visting some friends who could bring a ton of business here, but they will never be back. Don't waste your time or money!!!

This spot has a large u-shaped bar with seats all around (forcing you to talk to others)...they have a tiny dance floor, slot machines and animal heads on the wall. The bathrooms are clean. The moment I…read morewalked in the creaky old front door and saw the antique lobby furniture and decor, I knew some lady in a white dress from the 1800's was never going to leave. Sadly, I didn't experience any paranormal activity, but I slept wonderfully in my cozy bedroom at the end of the hall and down a few steps. This place is quaint and cute! When booking, pay attention to the room type-some of the rooms come with a private bath, others have a shared bathroom. There's a lovely seating area and coffee in the morning so you can mingle and chit chat with the other guests. After all, you probably bumped into them in your bathrobe on the way to the bathroom anyway. Might as well have a cup of coffee together!

When we checked-in, Ronnie, at the front desk, informed us that our standard room with two beds…read moredid not include a private bathroom, so we would have to use a shared public shower and separate toilet. She said she already rented the the only other room with two beds that had a private bathroom to their one only other party. We could get a different room with a private bathroom, at an additional cost. We were already paying $169/night! These days I thought standard hotel rooms all come with a private bathroom! Well then this is a historic hotel, located in the historic Virginia City of Montana,, where originally there probably was no indoor plumbing! So who knows what a historic standard room meant? This standard room without bathroom looked to be about 12' x 12', with two twin beds, one night stand, and wash stand nicely crammed into it. Perhaps there was room enough for two adults if they were munchkins who had only the clothes on their backs! So I asked Ronnie if there were any rooms with a shared bed with private bathroom. She immediately offered my sister and me a room (without additional fee) with a full bed, two night stands, an old-fashioned vanity, chair, and very small closet that had a private bathroom. While a vast improvement, there was still only enough room to walk in the room after we piled our suitcases on the vanity and luggage rack. My sister reported that her side of the bed sagged, probably due to previous guests sitting on the bed while dressing since there was little else to sit on. This room had so little walking space that we felt even the housekeeper wouldn't be able to clean our room without knocking over our preecariously-balanced belongings. With only one other party, I really don't understand why we weren't offered what we had reserved, let alone a free upgrade, in the first place. We would not stay here again.

As a long time fisherman but first time fly fisher brian not only produced dozens of fish daily for us but the way he teaches is hands down amazing. He is extremely calm and his patience as a teacher blew me and my family away. He is constantly watching and correcting you through the day. Teaching you about the correct ways to cast, fish locations, flys to use and refining your skills. It's amazing how he can do all of this as he spent 9 hours rowing down the river in 85 degree temps. He never let up. We had fish in the boat within minute of hitting the water. Thanks again Brian for the great memories and your fine teachings.

As a female just learning to fly fish, there are plenty of ways I could be intimidated or belittled or demeaned. But Brian always treated me with respect and consideration and kindness. At one point, just like a chick, I was crying in his boat. He could not have been more professional, supportive and compassionate. When you want to engage with the great outdoors, whether you are an expert or novice, Brian is the man you want for your guide. Spend some time with him, you'll be better for it.

It is the perfect location. a half a block off of Main street. Just far enough for peace and quiet and close enough for all the fun things to do in Ennis. The owners, "Swaney" and Mandy are especially wonderful hosts who go above and beyond to make their guests feel comfortable during their stay. The welcome packet of Biltong alone made my South African husband light up over this little piece of home, but their hospitality was much more than that. They were always opened to having a chat, or providing advice and guidance to us on where to visit, things to look for or just simply asking how our adventures went. Because of family, we've come here many times. I've stayed at Moriah several times over the years and its really nice. Clean, comfortable, and quiet. Great landscaping. Good water pressure. Lots of cable channels (we found NFL channel for a Packers pre-season game when we couldn't find it anywhere else). New owners took over in August, and they were very nice and friendly. Myself and my niece had a room, my sister and sister-in-law another, and my cousin and his wife took a 3rd room. I don't want people booking this place up all the time, but it is worth sharing because its the best place to stay in the Ruby Valley.
