If you're reading this, you know how hard it can be to trust someone with your hair. A few weeks ago, I was going through the same process... looking up "best salons" and doing my best to find pictures and reviews of individual stylists - trying to pick a "good" one before I called to see if they were available. I was calling on Thursday, getting ready to leave on vacation the following Monday. We were planning a photo shoot the next week, so I was taking a HUGE risk going to get my hair done right before our trip, and with someone who I had never worked with. I called many places, but naturally, some of their master stylist were booked till the end of time, so there was no way I would see them last minute. I finally stumbled on Shag Spa and Salons. They've been in the Woodlands 11 years, and had many different stylists. I looked through their reviews, and further researched any stylists I thought might work for me. Enter Alex! First of all, I was so happy to see she had an IG page with her previous clients before and afters (@alexatshag). Because I couldn't assume her skill based on her years of work (as compared to a master stylist), I needed to see what she had done in the past in order for me to feel comfortable enough to sit in her chair. I've had some awful hair experiences (as many of you have), so needless to say, I was very nervous! I wanted a soft balayage and a trim with some face framing pieces. Simple, yet considering the circumstances, it could have been a disaster! I called Shag to start asking my questions.. Alex heard the receptionist doing her best to answer, and eventually got on the phone so we could talk. I poured my nervous heart out to her ( I really want this, but I'm scared!) Haha. She listened to what I wanted, explained her process, and opened up her schedule on her day off so we could get er done. I met her early the next morning, and before she did anything, we sat and talked and looked at pictures and she again further explained her plan. At this point, all I could do was sit back, let go and enjoy the process (literally - I love my hair being played with!). Alex was AMAZING. She took her time, talked through what she was doing with me, answered all of my nervous questions, and was SO sweet and happy the whole time. She mentioned she loves what she does, and you could feel it - she genuinely enjoyed painting my hair and styling it! The results speak for themselves. At the end (this took several hours), we were both so genuinely pleased, and I was pretty much shocked at HOW good it came out. I've never had my hair look like this before! She was so excited at how great it looked - it made me feel even better about what I had come in for! I mean, I knew I liked it, but when your stylist is sincerely stoked at how great it looks, you know you did well!! I am SO happy Shag was here for me, and that someone like Alex works for them - I have been in the Woodlands two years, and have finally found my hair stylist!! I absolutely LOVE my hair.. Brittany is amazing…read more Pros: - Brittany is a bonified certified DevaCut Specialist - she's so knowledgeable about the various textures & types of Curly Girls - she was amazing with my Super Curly (aka kinky textured, 4a 4b) - she walked me through step by step of what she was doing - she was soooo quick, it took her about 1 hr & 1/2 (which typically takes me all day!) - I left prepared with a Deva Curl "prescription" specifically for my hair, telling me which products to get - I learned techniques I never knew before - she's such a friendly sweet lady Cons: - Absolutely none !!! ... well maybe that i live in CA & she's located in TX, haha!! But that's not her fault. I live in California, but was visiting family in Texas. I've been researching getting a DevaCut for a few years now... But it's kinda a scary thing to do when you've grown up for years as a Black woman not having "proper" education about "your" kind of hair. Being only given Damaging options of Relaxers and Weave and Braids and Wigs (which I refuse) OR Heat Damaging options of Blow Outs, Flat Irons, Press and Curls. So while in town, I just researched DevaCut on Yelp and low and behold Brittany came up with these great reviews. I called on Wed and she gave me an appointment for Friday! Woo hoo! My instructions were to come dry & detangled. I arrived early because I was nervous and excited and didn't want to be late. Brittany put me in rotation as she was finishing another client (who was also getting a DevaCut for the first time). I told her my struggles & to just work her magic (I figured if I was going to go for it, why interfere with her judgement of what needed to be trimmed...). I don't think she ever used a brush or comb - & she educated me on this . The products smell so good, don't leave gooky residue & I'm sold. She also recommended a great book that has great tips for those transitioning into healthy hair. I bought the products she had in stock & I'll buy the rest on Amazon. I'm excited about this journey. If you're in the Tomball/ Woodlands area of Texas, Brittany is the DevaCut person to trust. I'll be coming to see her when I'm in town.

While I was getting my cut I mentioned that I had recently got highlights at another salon that were pretty underwhelming and I was curious to know if she could give me what I wanted. So I booked a Saturday for my color and Brittney hooked me up!!! She patiently worked to correct the previous color and gave me exactly what I wanted. And I love love love the results! If you have curly or wavy hair and live in the Cypress, Tomball, or Katy areas, you have to go see Brittney! She's easy to talk to and very knowledgeable about products and how to style your hair after you leave the salon.
