If you're reading this, you know how hard it can be to trust someone with your hair. You do your best research, hoping whoever you pick will do a good job... or at least not completely mess it up! A few weeks ago, I was going through the same process... looking up "best salons" and doing my best to find pictures and reviews of individual stylists - trying to pick a "good" one before I called to see if they were available. I was calling on Thursday, getting ready to leave on vacation the following Monday. We were planning a photo shoot the next week, so I was taking a HUGE risk going to get my hair done right before our trip, and with someone who I had never worked with. I called many places, but naturally, some of their master stylist were booked till the end of time, so there was no way I would see them last minute. I finally stumbled on Shag Spa and Salons. They've been in the Woodlands 11 years, and had many different stylists. I looked through their reviews, and further researched any stylists I thought might work for me. Enter Alex! First of all, I was so happy to see she had an IG page with her previous clients before and afters (@alexatshag). Because I couldn't assume her skill based on her years of work (as compared to a master stylist), I needed to see what she had done in the past in order for me to feel comfortable enough to sit in her chair. I've had some awful hair experiences (as many of you have), so needless to say, I was very nervous! I wanted a soft balayage and a trim with some face framing pieces. Simple, yet considering the circumstances, it could have been a disaster! I called Shag to start asking my questions.. Alex heard the receptionist doing her best to answer, and eventually got on the phone so we could talk. I poured my nervous heart out to her ( I really want this, but I'm scared!) Haha. She listened to what I wanted, explained her process, and opened up her schedule on her day off so we could get er done. I met her early the next morning, and before she did anything, we sat and talked and looked at pictures and she again further explained her plan. At this point, all I could do was sit back, let go and enjoy the process (literally - I love my hair being played with!). Alex was AMAZING. She took her time, talked through what she was doing with me, answered all of my nervous questions, and was SO sweet and happy the whole time. She mentioned she loves what she does, and you could feel it - she genuinely enjoyed painting my hair and styling it! The results speak for themselves. At the end (this took several hours), we were both so genuinely pleased, and I was pretty much shocked at HOW good it came out. I've never had my hair look like this before! She was so excited at how great it looked - it made me feel even better about what I had come in for! I mean, I knew I liked it, but when your stylist is sincerely stoked at how great it looks, you know you did well!! I am SO happy Shag was here for me, and that someone like Alex works for them - I have been in the Woodlands two years, and have finally found my hair stylist!! I absolutely LOVE my hair.. When I first got there I really enjoyed looking around at the clothes, purses, jewelry and products they have. I was booked with this one young lady to cut and color my hair. She started it then all of a sudden she had to leave. Thank goodness there happen to be another lady that was off, but decided to stick around to see if they had any walk ins. I'm glad I was put with her she was much better. She was more personable and outgoing. She did a great job on my hair. I will be returning and using her. I am disappointed in the fact that I wanted dark brown color and I told the first girl what I wanted. She did at least get the color set on my hair, but it did not turn out to the color I asked for. Very good service the first time I went in, wanted to get the same service so I went back into color my hair again I was given a different person. The service was horrible, whatever they used to color my hair wasn't meant for hair in my opinion. I left with extremely dry locks and lost 50%of my hair... my name is Irina Michalak btw! My last review for this place was over a year ago, so I thought I'd write an update. I've now been coming to Shag for several years. I've watched as the place has grown in clientele. The staff that works here is great! My wife and I recently had a child. Even though I only see Tiffany, the rest of the staff around her always asks about my little one. I really enjoy that they remember you here. As for my personal stylist experience, Tiffany Mutolo (she was recently married and has a new last name) continues to be amazing at what she does. I see her once every two weeks. Her penchant for perfection is obvious in all she does. She first performs my men's cut, then shampoo/conditioning, and then styles it. After she is done, she looks my head over and makes any last minute adjustments to my hair. I know we are supposed to have specific appointment times, but she does not sacrifice quality and thoroughness in the interest of time. So, you won't feel rushed -- but you will leave with a haircut/styling that you'll be happy with. My wife also sees her as well and loves her work. As I mentioned in my last review, I have only seen Tiffany -- so your mileage may vary with another stylist -- but they all seem very friendly. It's difficult to write this review, but unfortunately I feel the need to inform others of my experience at Shag Salon & Spa. The stylists rent booths at this Salon, so it's not necessarily the Salon that is getting this review. I moved from Chicago and had yet to find a stylist in the Houston area. I called Shag Salon & Spa and unknowing spoke to the hairstylist's son who booked me with him the following morning. I asked what they charged for highlights/lowlights. I was told $185. I asked about the cut and I was told they started at $65. David was very personable and I thought it was going to be a good experience. I wasn't thrilled with the cut because The my bangs were bulky and he cut a lot of hair. The entire time, he said absolutely nothing about cost. He spoke of styling celebrities in Beverly Hills, so I thought he must be good to have done so well. While checking our he bagged up two products without even asking and they were charged to the Salon. Unfortunately when I went to check out, it came to exactly $1047.50. I'm sure the look on my face said it all. There was no option to refuse to tip. I paid it and then cried all the way home. I was conned into believing I was getting a cut and highlights/lowlights. That's what I went in for. I did NOT get a Brazilian Blowout (and apparently received a 10% discount). I'm still devastated and attempted to communicate with the stylist numerous times to no avail. I did not get what I asked for and am very unhappy with the results. There are absolutely no reviews on him, however, he's apparently worked in many places in California and Texas. The place looks amazing and I'm sure they do a great job but if you're looking for a pedicure, this isn't the place. I walked in and the lady that does pedicures wasn't there. So I had to leave and find another place. Which I did, Top Coat. Shag is definitely more of a hair salon. read more

There are very very few hair stylists I've ever been happy with and had failed to find one in Texas. I have extremely thick uncooperative hair and wanted to do a big change! The salon was great and the staff seemed very sweet, but unfortunately I didn't get a great stylist. I hate name dropping, but trying a new stylist can be so scary. Her name was Sandra. My regular stylist wasn't available and I wanted it cut before my trip. I got Sandra and she didn't do a very good job on the cut and she was rude. I got about 4 inches cut and wanted a bob. I showed her several pictures of what I wanted. She got done and didn't do the layers that I wanted, so I asked her to and showed her the picture again. So she cut the layers and showed me, but they were way uneven. The shortest layer on the right was longer than the shortest layer on the left and there was one big piece way shorter in the middle. I showed her and she got loud with me, saying that since my hair is curly, I shouldn't get it any shorter. A. I know my hair B. You shouldn't have made the one piece way shorter than the rest C. Why would you be so rude!? I took a big breath in and just asked her to style it and not cut anymore (because who knows what would happen?). There was no point in being rude back to her. So I got home to style it myself and wowwww... when I pull the top layer back, the right is like a whole inch longer than the left. Not "A line" bob longer. Just bad stylist who cuts your bob longer. I am new to using this salon, my services received were full makeup with lashes with an updo. I paid 145 dollars for the worst make-up and updo I have ever seen. Sadly I had to rush home remove the make up, the lashes were falling off and redo my hair. The person that performed my updo admitted she really didn't have any experience doing updo's, I actually had to start pinning it up myself at The salon, she left me unfinished because someone else came in and needed a touch up on their hair. This was going to cause me to be late for my workplace event, due to time spent once returning home to make myself look presentable... I then arrived 45 minutes late. I cannot recommend Tyler Harvey enough! He is a legit MIRACLE worker!!! I live in Chicago but had my wedding in Houston. I was so worried about what I was going to do with my hair, I have very fine, thin, curly hair.. I've never left a hairstylist feeling confident and totally happy with my hair bc it's so difficult to work with.. I never knew my hair could look this good, this man seriously works magic! Not only did he make me feel super glam, he also worked his crazy magic on my bridesmaids who all had different types of hair. I know this sounds hyperbolic but Tyler Harvey was legit LIFE CHANGING! 2 years later, I'm still getting compliments on the work he did at my wedding! Last year I had a baby, and around 3 months after giving birth my hair started falling out, and the texture changed. Mortified, I texted Tyler on his personal phone at like 7am. Not only did he immediately respond and calm me down, he really listened to all of my concerns, and tailored a new hair care regime that within a week got me back to normal! I dropped my old stylist in Chicago (who was recommended by vogue and had a 4 month wait) for Tyler because Tyler far surpassed any and all expectations! Huma has done it again! After a rough start to 2018, I was ready for something new. A day or two before my appointment, I saw a post from another of Huma's clients who went platinum. I mentioned the post to her and while I didn't want to go platinum, we decided to go VERY blonde. Add to that a super sharp angled bob and a Kerastasse treatment to get my hair back into shape and -- voila! I am a new girl ("girl" of a certain age, anyway...). I'm a bit loathe to write this as I'm afraid she'll get SO busy it'll be hard to get an appointment with her, but when I need my spirits lifted, Huma is my gal and she should be yours too! Oh, see that 4th pic? That's me about a week before. My hair had gotten pretty long and I was way overdue for a cut, color and treatment. The true sign of a great stylist, like Huma, is when your hair looks this good even when it's grown out and you're over due for a visit to your stylist! After almost 2 years of not going to get my hair professionally done, I came across Shag. I am new to the area and decided to give them a chance. From the 1st phone call to the receptionist all the way through my haircut and color, I was VERY impressed! The staff is professional, courteous and goes above and beyond to make their clients feel comfortable. I cannot say enough positive things about Sydney, my stylist!! She took my hair from a home colored reddish/brown that was mid-length and hadn't been cut in years to an amazing a line bob with FANTASTIC color!! I have gotten complemented on my hair at least once a day since she did it last Friday. I can say 100%, without a doubt, I have found my stylist!! I wanted to try something new and decided to try Balayage. I spent a lot of time trying to find a place I felt comfortable with going to. I liked the photos at Shag and called yesterday to get an appointment. I was scheduled for 10:45am today (the next day) for Balayage and a hair cut. I showed up at 10:35am and was told I was not on the books but yet they had my contact information in their computer. I have never been here and the receptionist who took my information took my contact info. She took time to enter me into the computer but didn't schedule me. They told me there was nothing they could do for me. Needless to say I am pissed I took a day off work to get my hair done since next week is my birthday. What poor customer service and a total waste of my time and effort. I will not be coming back here due to the level of customer service I received. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. I used a temporary blue color- out in 4 to 10 washes to put a few streaks in my hair. After 24 washes I made an appt at 3 pm. The stylist told me she was doing a color strip and put me under the dryer. She left and came back about 40 minutes later. Did it again. Then did something else and put me under dryer again. At this point it was almost 6 pm. She said 3 more hours. I was there until 11 pm- letting her know frequently that this was too long. At the end- I have the same amount of blue in my hair and she told me they charged by the hour. $480 for highlights and lowlights and a trim. Contacted the manager the next day and she said they don't charge by the hour. Call all the time and still have not received a response from the first call saying they owed me a refund. Pricing on website shows $160 for the services I was given. She did not even do a color strip it turns out! This is absolutely ridiculous. read more

First of all let me say my hair is cute, and it is a well cut bob. I lost about 3-4 inches of hair on the bottom I worked so hard to grow out to get a specific cut that is a shag and nothing at all what was cut. I showed 2 photos of a style longer in the back and a shag from there on up. Now I'll have to grow again. In the meantime, it's a nice bob if you had wanted a bob. read more

I have gone once to Heather for my haircut and I really liked what she did. She took alot of time with me which I appreciate but I'm hoping that our visits can become more streamlined and a bit faster. I have very thick long hair and I like a decent amount of layering. She thinned out the thickest area around my head which alleviated alot of weight in my hair. It felt so much nicer and easier to maintain after that. It was like a light beamed down from the heavens onto my hair-pure magic. I will update as I go more often and will definitely be rebooking with Heather. The atmosphere really isn't my thing and I like the look of more hip salons like Skyrokh Salon. I also like when they use Aveda or more natural products on my hair but for a decent haircut I will go almost anywhere. I'm pretty anxiety ridden with going to a new person and can't jump into just going anywhere. I'm hoping my next visit proves to be five star worthy again. read more
