I've been eating at this restaurant ever since I was 3 years old in the original location. Standard order for my family at the big round table is the iconic soup #1, young chow fried rice , fried chicken and their famous oh-Teh ( fried dumpling). I am delighted that their soup#1 still has the same taste over the past 5-6 decades. I am mildly disappointed in the fried dumpling. I am sure the chef is third generation by now, but he needs to learn how to make that ultra thin layer of crispy skin that holds all the dumplings together. We ordered it 3 times recently in 3 different occasions and the crispy flour skin were all fails. Also, that familiar taste and aroma on the first bite of the dumpling is now missing. The fried rice is not the same taste and quality and the fried chicken is no longer the same as before. Somehow the batter is different and not crispy like before.
Overall, it is still a good place to eat. If nostalgia is your goal, only the soup #1 is still the same.
Service is a little lacking, the servers keep hiding in the back of the restaurant.
They are going to be relocating to a new location very soon due to the subway construction on West Avenue. Hopefully they can train their chefs/cooks to bring back some of the iconic taste from their original recipes. I will still keep coming for that Soup #1!!! read more
