The interior is vast, and beautifully decked out; something that comes as a bit of a surprise... you certainly wouldn't think that the salon was quite as grand and that it occupies such a large space when viewing it from the outside. Being the stylists to celebrities like Sian Lloyd the weather presenter, Coray & Co. are not the cheapest salons in town, but they are definitely one of the better ones! Women's cut and blow-dries start at £43.90, and men's start at £28.90 They offer a full range of hair and beauty services including: cuts and trims, extensions (human hair options available), colouring (semi-permanent and permanent), manicures and pedicures, waxing, body treatments, facials and tanning. The decor's a bit dated and the signed photos on the wall don't really endear the younger generation (do you really want to look like June Whitfield or Sian Lloyd?), but this is a salon that has a long history in Cardiff and is still around while many of their competitors have come and gone. Maria Robinson is one half of a husband and wife team that both run their own salon. Maria runs Intense Hair and Beauty and Carl runs Carl Cutters, both of which occupy the same commercial property. It's a sensible arrangement that keeps things simple, and although there is internal access to each of the businesses, customers enter through two different exterior doors. The shop front of Carl Cutters is actually on Adeline Street, whereas Intense Hair and Beauty faces out onto Carlisle Street. Maria is a really friendly, affable person that seems as though nothing could shock her, or upset her easy, well balanced approach to the world. It is not surprising then, that she has carved out such a successful living in this area. Offering really high standards of customer care, and really taking an interest in the locals, (she was born and bred in Splott herself), they understandably come here in their droves. Since, like some sort of modern-day goldilocks I have tried several different salons based in Cardiff. Yet none quite come close to La Zarou Bros. The same salon my Mum has been visiting for over 20 years - it's where you'll find me EVERY Thursday after work. They have a few salons in the city centre yet my favourite is in Churchill Way. It's somewhat like those American style barber shops - but the female version. The staff aren't just friends they're family. They know you by name and remember conversations they've had with you from months ago. No typical 'off on holiday' or 'we're having nice weather' talks will take place here. What's more despite having long hair I'm not having to worry that my card will decline at the point of payment. My blow-wave (wash, blow-dry into loose curls) costs less than £20 and it's a given that I leave every week feeling as though I should whip my hair back and forth - or at least whisper "because I'm worth it". Note: All the staff here are super talented and most have 'done' my hair at least once yet my all time favourite person here is Alex - not only do I trust him with my daily drama and gossip but I also let him near me with scissors!

Replying that I was going to the cinema, but didn't knwo what I was going to see, the hairdresser next to me joined in the conversation. To my great enjoyment, the entire hairdressing salon was then involved in the same conversation about what I should go to see.

Ah, Martin, how my unruly hair adores you…read more You'd think that long layers would be an easy cut to master, but you'd be surprised how many stylists manage to chop off too many inches and then flatten the remaining locks with a straightening iron. Not here. Martin, the salon's owner, prices haircuts by his hands at a reasonable £40 - and he cuts it like I would if I had the skills! It's refreshing when a stylist listens when you make a request, but has enough knowledge to talk you out of a bad decision (like when I wanted fringe and Martin promptly, but politely, explained that it would be very hard work with both natural curls and a cowlick). I can't comment on the beauty treatments offered, but as it's right around the corner from my flat and the prices are competitive, I'm definitely booking my next one here!

On the other hand, if you're given a seat right at the front of the shop at least you won't have passers by gawping in at you when you're in that unattractive, towel-up, pre-cut state! Prices are lower than you'd pay at most city centre salons, and the blokes I know who have had their hair cut here have been happy with the service.

The result was fantastic! The picture I included was near the end of the day (I neglected to take a photo of the initial result) so it looked a bit messier than it initially was, but you can still see the very pretty design! - MAKEUP - (£40) I was with Sarah for my makeup and she was very friendly and fabulous. She was a bit more hesitant to take full control compared to Matthew, but she was still nice as she slowly realised that I don't know much about makeup myself! The end result was lovely though and she even taught me which spots I should contour if I were ever to try it myself in the future. The staff are always polite and very accommodating offering drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) magazines and generally talkative. There are apple macs you can use while your colour is setting. They make a point of remembering you from previous sessions so as to create a real report. They text reminders to keep you informed. It's a very stylish interior hair salon. Opening late on thursdays. Word of advise book in advance.
