I'm listening to Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" right now, and baking a nail file into a cake for the hell of it. (Sidebar: It was all a big mix up and the judge laughed about it before tossing it out. My reign of terror can now continue unfettered.) I have no basis for comparison since this is the ony run-in that I've had with the law, so I have to use television, movies and rap music as my baseline. So here are my pros and cons: Pros: I did not get sexually assaulted I got to eat pizza All of the cops were really cool I was not victim of the dreaded "shanking" Cons: There was no old, hardened prisoner to provide me with sage advice No one offered me a tear tattoo I was forced to watch According to Jim Honestly it wasn't a bad experience, but being forced to watch According to Jim was enough to scare me straight. I would have preferred the shanking. That show alone cost them two stars. Don't test the law in Campbell County, kids, they have cruel, Jim Belushi based torture.

But this time I got speeding ticket from a State Trooper who is smarter than the Waze app. (He used moving radar, got me on I-71 at mile marker 34, which is not half a mile from where the speed limit raises from 65 to 75. This guy knows exactly how to game the system.) Working with Attorney JR Bernans was a breeze. He advised me on the current state of the local prosecutor (some recent personnel changes at the courthouse added some nuance to the case. We discussed strategies, and probable outcomes. And while I know that everyone will not be as fortunate as I in their legal disputes, JR was able to reduce my speeding ticket to a nonmoving violation. This guy is GOOD at his job. He will loose evidence from the time it's presented to the time it's supposed to be handed over to the judge. He shakes. He was at one point called into the judges chambers, and you could hear the judge yelling at him out of frustration. He asks to leave the court room to talk to his assistant. He asks your witnesses, "What questions should I ask on the stand?" He tells witnesses your case cannot be won without them. Two of my witnesses in the court hearing that day asked me if I thought he may have been under the influence of drugs. He does not do research. He does not put time into your case. If you hire this lawyer, you may as well make a stand during the hearing and ask for a continuance for his incompetence. Save your 11,000 dollars and do not hire.
