I have now had two negative experiences at Sharkey's Cuts for Kids, and unfortunately this most recent one was for a very special occasion for my daughter. My first visit (about a year ago) was for a haircut. I selected "first stylist available" because I wanted to give someone a fair chance rather than automatically booking one of the highest-rated stylists. We were assigned to (I believe) Leanne. The haircut ended up significantly shorter than requested, and the layers were extremely choppy. I chose not to say anything at the time because my daughter is very sensitive and would have left in tears if she sensed I was unhappy. I fixed the cut at home. This past weekend was my daughter's Daddy Daughter Dance -- a very special event to her as a 7-year-old. I booked an updo and mini cure and specifically selected a higher-rated stylist to avoid repeating my previous experience. The only notification I received prior to the appointment was a 10-minute time change. I was not informed that the stylist would also be changed. When I arrived, we were again assigned to the same stylist I had previously had concerns about. The updo took close to an hour. At around the 35-minute mark, the style was coming together ok and somewhat reflected what I had requested, which did include braids incorporated into the back. However, the entire style was then taken down and redone into a messy bun base with braids leading into it and hair pinned around the bun. While braids were part of the original inspiration, the final execution was significantly worse. The braids lacked clean sectioning, structure, and definition, and appeared loose and uneven. The finished look did not resemble a polished salon-quality updo and felt more reflective of inexperience than professional styling. The only positive part of this visit was that they placed us into a "Day of Beauty" service rather than what I originally booked, which included makeup. This ended up being slightly cheaper because the updo was included in that package. However, this was not clear during online booking. The website lists "hairstyle" separately from an "updo," so if an updo is included in that package, it should be clearly stated to avoid confusion. Unfortunately, the makeup application was also poorly done and barely visible. I understand that makeup for children is meant to be age-appropriate and light, but there was hardly any noticeable product applied. The service cost $55 plus tip. I always tip out of respect, regardless of satisfaction. However, the biggest issue was durability -- the pins were placed incorrectly and the style began falling apart before the dance even started. I had to redo approximately 80% of the updo myself, including re-pinning and redefining the braids. It ultimately looked much better once corrected at home than it did leaving the salon.. As a licensed cosmetologist since 2010, I understand technique and the importance of proper structure and pin placement for longevity. I booked this service not because I couldn't do it myself, but because I wanted my daughter to enjoy the full salon experience for a special event. I'm disappointed not only in the quality of the work, but in the stylist switch without notice -- especially after intentionally selecting someone specific, so I wouldn't end up with this particular stylist after my last experience. For the price paid, I expected a polished, secure updo that would last through the event. I truly hope this feedback is taken constructively. My intention is not to attack anyone personally, but to express genuine disappointment after repeated experiences. read more

What an absolutely horrible experience. We came in for a first hair cut experience which includes a photo before and after. She took an image of my son where he was hardly paying attention and I said hold on and tried to get him to smile. She said "it's fine" and just put the camera away. What are you looking for?: I said I like that it's long. I like it thick on the sides and back. I want it to keep the overall same shape just trimmed a bit to be cleaner. She started taking a lot off the sides and I said wow you're really taking a lot off. She said I need to or it will have wings on the sides. I said we asked to keep it long but okay. Multiple other times I mentioned she was taking too much off. The top still had length at this point then she lifted it off and just hacked off multiple inches. My son was very upset and my husband asked her to stop for a minute so he could calm him down. She kept buzzing at my kids head with her trimmer despite being asked to stop. He left with a very visibly crooked essentially military style haircut. They didn't make us pay but it will take months for my son's hair to look remotely like his own again. The people in line behind us witnessed the experience and wisely chose to leave. The idea of this place is nice but I'd recommend going to people who actually know how to cut hair and follow directions. read more

I wish I could rate higher than 5/5...This is hands down the BEST salon around for children! Our favorite stylist is Angela. We've been here twice. Once for my daughters first haircut (you get a keep sake lock of hair + certificate with picture + mani, balloon & ring!)--which was super awesome for her & us! & another recently for a wash, cut & dry. This time, my daughter had surgery & was in a wheelchair, which was tricky to navigate. Angela & staff were extremely helpful & accommodating. Angela went above and beyond! Cannot recommend her enough. She washed my daughter's hair twice, as it's been difficult for us to do so in her wheelchair. She was running a bit behind so while she painted my daughter's nails & she asked another stylist do French braids so it would help us with the constant snarls she was getting--all out of the goodness of her heart, took time to make our girly feel special & pampered. I will forever go to Sharkey's to see Angela! She does a fantastic job. The other women at the salon are very friendly as well. Salon is magical & very clean. Bonus, you get free donation chips to donate to an organization to help children-- of your choosing! Highly recommend! read more

The good reviews don't hold up for what I experienced today. Beware that past reviews must of been for folks that use to work there because Lindsey has no patience to cut children's hair, and can't even bother to wipe any hairs during or after she is done. It's like she's on a marathon. Poor cashier had to step in and try helping by offering rags, a roller, and powder. She also can't line up either for the life of her. Super unprofessional and any concerns you express is out the window. Better off taking your child to a barber shop and buying them a ballon and candy elsewhere. She seems to make everyone uncomfortable by how she handles paying customers. read more

My son turns 1yrs tomorrow and they were so amazing! He moves a lot and is unsure of things. He questions every noise, movement and just about anything else lol. But the whole time they worked with him and me to fix the haircut I did before..aye lol. I live a ways away, but I will be going here for haircuts either way, my son had such a great experience. read more
