I had been on a search for a hair stylist who would work with me to style my thick head of fine hair. As a runner, I needed to keep my length to put it up in a pony tail but I also wanted something sassy and stylish. My friend Michelle Rigano referred me to Jen at Star Salon and Style. Jen took time before my appointment to talk with me and discuss the options for how to wear my hair. From the moment I sat down in the chair I knew I could totally trust her and I was right! I have the best style that I've ever had and I'm almost 62 years old. We had a delightful conversation as she effortlessly styled my hair which other hair stylists have struggled and wrestled with. She is an artist, a delightful person and even though I live in Brookline and the salon is in Medford, it is well worth the commute. After having my third child, I needed to find somewhere closer to home to have my hair cut and colored. Enter the extremely talented Sharon at Star Salon & Style. I found her through my daily Dunkin' Donuts fix. Her clean and stylish salon is conveniently located next door. Sharon is so personable and knowledgeable. She warmly welcomes me like I'm a close friend. I have thick curly hair so it is imperative to find an experienced curly-girl stylist. Sharon also does my color. She has masterfully matched my natural color to cover up grays with one process color and has also artfully applied beautiful balyage. Each time I've been thrilled with the results. While waiting for my color to process, Sharon ensures I'm set up a drink and a magazine. Upon applying my color, Sharon provides a thorough cleansing wash and a relaxing conditioning scalp massage. She then takes her time to cut my hair w carefully placed layers so it can naturally air dry minus the poofy frizz. The best thing about getting my cut and color with Sharon is how well it grows out. When my childhood bestie (and hairdresser) moved away I was hesitant to try someone new. My brother and I actually met Sharon (Owner of Star Salon & Style) outside of work and immediately loved her presence and personality. I later discovered that she owned her own shop. Being a strikingly attractive blonde that she is, (big fan of her hair), I decided to visit her at her Salon so she could doctor up my blonde mane. Well, it's now been a little over a year and I absolutely LOVE the way Sharon foils and cuts. I have found that a lot of hairdressers when applying bleach, always like to leave a little bit of a root which requires one to return to the chair for "touch ups" constantly....my natural color is very dark and yet, the way she places the foils, I am able to go like 10 weeks without terrible roots. HUGE PLUS. I believe her prices to be very fair and I find that she really looks out for her clients. She's very cool in the salon and is always professional. So I never write yelp reviews, but this most certainly deserved one. I had Jen give me my first real haircut, it was a bob back in 2011 and honestly no one has cut my hair better than her! After she left Naz in Lexington I lost contact with her and this past week I finally found her... I recently got my hair colored earlier this month at a different salon and it became yellow and weirdly colored, so I desperately need a highlight and cut. Found her at Star Salon and nothing has changed, she's still the absolute best I've been to and I've had 3 or 4 others color my hair since losing contact with her. Star Salon is so cute and the size of the salon makes you feel super comfortable as there is only 3 chairs total, so the attention is focused on you. I never felt as though Jen was rushing through but felt as though she paid close attention to what I wanted and delivered perfectly. Amazing salon!! Followed Jennifer from Lexington - I'd probably follow her wherever she moved!! I have A LOT of hair and I am VERY picky...my hair is my thing. Before going to Jennifer, I tried several salons in the area, not wanting to make the hall to Boston I was frustrated because after 4 different salons I was about to give up until I started seeing Jennifer over 7 years ago!! What I love about her is she LISTENS to what I want...sounds silly but we've all been to those stylists that will cut until their hearts are content even if I ask for a trim?! Jennifer's priority is making sure I walk out the door happy. She recently did my hair for my wedding...I wore it all down, she curled every inch of my head leaving the dramatic sexy waves I wanted...let's just say everyone complimented my hair before the dress!!! Nice, modern salon with reasonable prices. When my old hairdresser retired, I checked out various salons near my home in Medford and didn't really feel comfortable in any of them until Star. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and the ambience/décor is great. I've been going for over 2 years. I got my hair cut first by Stephanie and then (after Stephanie moved away) by Felecia, who also does my partner's hair (cut & color). We both like Felecia. I have short-ish hair, done in androgynous cut with a lot of razor; my partner has long hair. Note - they charge a fee for last-minute cancellations and no-shows, which I think is fair (but some people don't like - flaky people, I imagine). Another potential downside for some might be the location - it's on the extended strip mall that is Mystic Ave. Very convenient from Medford or Somerville with a car, maybe less convenient if you don't have a car. read more

My hairdresser of 5 years up and moved to California and I was LOST! Who could possibly know how I like my hair cut, colored and styled?? Not to mention I am blonde and not many hair dressers can do blonde with out it turning to brass after 3 months. I heard about Sharon through a mutual friend who had been going to her for years. I tried, I loved, and two years later I am SO HAPPY. I am 36 years old and EXTREMELY picky and critical when it comes to my hair. Sharon is the BEST. No panicking for me. Matter of fact, I took my lap top today and cranked out work emails for two hours while she cut and colored my (long) hair. After going to the same hair stylist for quite some time, it is very hard to start new with someone else and have that perfect cut and color. Being new to the New England/Boston area, I read many great reviews from Star Salon & Style. I booked an appointment with Sharon, the owner, and she did an absolutely AMAZING job on my hair. I have bright blonde hair due to previous highlighting, and my natural color is a dark blonde/light brown. Sharon kept my original light brown color and incorporated fresh, beautiful blonde highlights into my hair. It looks fantastic, and I will be going back to her from now on. I have been coming to this salon since they opened in the new location and I have never been disappointed! I have been going to Lisa for lash extensions for the past almost 5 years and will never leave! She is an expert in her craft and so easy to talk to. I recently got my hair cut and highlighted with Sharon and she made my hair look and feel amazing. She was so easy to explain to what I wanted and it was executed perfectly. This woman is capable of making someone's hair for example mine, look from "rags to riches" and EVERYTIME I need advice on what to do next to my hair she knows exactly what will look best. I recently moved here from California, and after having the same stylist for 15 years, I was very nervous to go somewhere new. Jen was my stylist and I could not be happier. The location is convenient, no problems with parking. Both of the stylists at are professionals. However, Sharon worked on me and she was beyond amazing. The consultation was done very professionally and relaxed at the same time. She gave me a gorgeous cut, color and highlight. The customer service and the whole atmosphere is friendly and up bit. When I moved to Boston, 4 years ago, I would travel back to NY to get my car cut (where I was from) . I had a few "okay" cuts up here but nothing special. After finding Sharon, I have not been back to NY since! I love the way she cuts my hair and she is great with color. I would highly recommend her.
