I've been coming to SGD on and off since they opened a few years ago. It's a little far for me, so I might make it once every few months. I've been impressed by their programming, social and events. I always know that when I go to SGD I'm going to feel safe and have a great time! This past weekend I had a friend visiting from London. She's an avid dancer and can dance w/ the best of them, so of course we chose to spend our one evening together at SGD. Late in the night, she lost her phone and we approached Miguel the owner of SGD to help us. He was super helpful, we exchanged phone #'s and he helped us gain wi-fi access to geo-locate the phone. He said the regulars are all super honest and ethical and that the phone should be here somewhere. Turns out, the phone dropped out onto the floor in our car. So crisis adverted! I guess in summary, what impressed me most was Miguel. The confidence and integrity in the business and community of regular dance patrons he's built. It was an absolute pleasure to experience that. I think some venues I've been to woulda said "Good luck to you!" But Miguel was concerned, helpful and supportive! If you are looking for a dance studio / community, I can't recommend SGD enough. I live a bit far and now will make more of an effort to dance here more regularly. read more

Came here and had so much fun! The night we came they had line dancing in one room. It was a blast! The lady leading it was great! I was keeping up but some steps I wasn't and the people around kind of helped. Very kind of them! Then we went to a different room for some Salsa! That room was packed and at one point was hard to walk through. I would definitely come back for another night of dancing! Oh, the parking was limited. We were lucky and found on in the parking lot but get there early! read more

They have whatever you are looking for in dancing. I enjoy the line dance classes, Latin classes and have even done a ballroom class. Friday night dance and showcases have been amazing! Would recommend for anyone adult wanting to dance regardless of age. read more

I give this business a five star rating all the way. There are three amazing rooms for Dance plus the bonus, outdoor floor when the weather is nice. The instructors for both the Fitness and ballroom dance classes are inclusive, welcoming, and friendly, in addition to knowledgeable in their dance category. Socials on the weekends are so much fun and you can meet lots of new people and dance the night away. If you want a fun place to work out and build your muscles or cardio this is the perfect place. The fitness community here is like no other. They are so inclusive and welcoming. The classes can benefit both beginners and Long Time fitness people. I am so happy to be a part of the special community and plan to be for the foreseeable future Also, as a bonus, the facility is clean and well-maintained. Shawn and all her employees do a great job making SGD and Diva Den run smoothly. I've been a member of mini other gyms/fitness facilities and then have been maintained better than SGD. read more

It's a lovely space and their instructors are very knowledgeable. I think if Covid wasn't going on, I would give this a five stars; those coming here really seem to enjoy the place. However, I was not under the impression that masks wouldn't be worn here. I don't need a reply to this from the owner - I know you've already put stuff up about how the studio doesn't apply the state's mask policy. It just made me super uncomfortable - especially because another patron got in my face to tell me I didn't need to wear a mask there. It would be one thing if everyone was spread out, but it's not. So - dancing space? Cool. Mask rules? No thanks. That's just how I personally feel about the disregard to Covid, and if you feel the same way, then I wouldn't bother coming here. read more

Love this place! Shawn does a great job keeping ballroom, Latin, and country dancing open in PDX. I have so many positive things to say about SGD and I am constantly trying to get my friends to come try it out. Personally, I try to go *at least* once a week and I'd love to go more if I could! The lessons are fun, the socials are a BLAST, and there are so many unique features that SGD offers to make them stand out: tacos, bar, multiple ballrooms, outdoor dancing... Oh! And the membership program?? An absolute steal! Honestly, dancing changed my life. I've met so many great people (especially at SGD) and had so many wonderful experiences. I am thrilled to continue dancing at such an awesome location! For those just looking for a venue, the facility itself is beautiful and definitely worth checking out as a rental (especially as the rainy season starts limiting us to indoor locations). The space is open, well ventilated, has a kitchen, balconies, and three rooms (plus the outdoor space) available for use. Parking lot plus lots of easy street parking makes it easy for large groups. Plus, I've always felt safe walking to and from my car at night. There's honestly so much more I could say about Shawn's but you definitely need to check it out. My Dancer friends love this business. Thank you Shawn for keeping it going. Very popular. Special events have bands and multiple dance styles in various rooms inc. Country, West Coast, Salsa, Bachata and Country swing. We do wish that she would offer more Ballroom as it is not on their schedule of classes or events. We all count Shawn Gardner Dancing as our go to for fun. There are other places we go, but this is on our list. You must like busy places on the Fridays or it may not be for you. We like the energy. Regardless of "personalities" by the owner or managers, which we have never had a bad experience with, we don't go there to schmooze the staff. We go to have fun. read more

Horrible first experience. Beginning hip hop I was happy the lights were fun and the ladies were supportive. Then some manager ignored OUR (plural) request to keep the lights low then started snapping photos of us while older dudes just start filing in watching my booty roll. I flipped when I told her politely I dont give permission to use my image.. . She said she already posted it. First, it's illegal. Second it's a safety issue for me! Do not go there if you do not want to be in a fishbowl, multiple people just walking through your class watching and talking. I was appalled that this was happening. They do not listen or care about your experience. Just how it looks on their site. Be a school, make sure you have some paperwork disclosing what you should expect, respect your students learning process and for God's sakes put your Phone down!!! Ps. I have 20+ years of dance experice and I have never seen such disregard for student privacy. read more

Zumba is so much fun here on the fancy dance floor with the night club lighting. The instructor Britney is great and brings a lot of energy to class. I didn't have the same experience as the last reviewer. I've been there for a couple of months now and never experienced anyone taking pictures or walking through class. read more

This last year my daughter was eager to try a new Dance Studio for a fresh look at dance styles and technique. Our choice ended up being a Big Mistake. We both found Shawn her self very rude and kinda stuck up. This Dance studio was overpriced and unoriginal and they just weren't very professional. At the same time, her instructor was very hard on her at a beginners level. The other students that have been attending for awhile didn't make her feel welcome at all. She came home from practice crying a few times, which is just unacceptable. She didn't join dance to be bullied by other kids, but to make new friends and learn new dance styles. We will never be coming back to this place. This year we will be going to the Sherwood Dance Academy! We have attended there before and we think that they have an amazing staff. They are very knowledgeable, kind and patient. They teach way more dance styles with a variety of levels at a variety of times to fit anyone's level and schedule. And the students are also kind and very welcoming to new dancers. If you decide to try Shawn Gardener Dancing out, I hope your experience is better than ours was. read more
