I wanted to take classes here. I signed up and was required to pay $165 to register, pay for a month of classes, and buy a uniform t-shit. After paying I was sent a packet of materials which included a list of this woman's rules. A couple of the more egregious ones follow: - your cell phone must be off but making audio recordings of class are encouraged for home practice. (I would normally use my cell phone for this task ) - you are enjoined from studying hula elsewhere. If you wish to leave this facility and join another you are required to ASK PERMISSION from the director of this facility to do so, and you are REQUIRED to wait A YEAR before resuming the dance. If you do not come to an in-person class when you were expected and do not let the director know in advance, you are not ever allowed to attend an in person class again. I ran afoul of this as in spite of leaving 2 hours prior to class as I was not able to find the studio in time. I don't blame them for my crappy navigation software, but I had no way to let the director know that I wouldn't make it because I was driving and trying to get there so I ran afoul of the rule against in person class attendance. I did not think I would be allowed to return and ask for a partial refund of the monies I paid. Her response was crickets. I have been in numerous dance classes over my life and have studied ballet, jazz, modern, middle eastern, Irish step dance, ballroom and Scottish country dance. Not once ever have I run across a list of (insane) rules or such harsh, inhumane punishments for human failings. There are abundant on line resources for learning hula and another school closer to me which I may check out but to be honest I'm feeling a little gun shy. Despite not being able to experience this school, the red flags in the packet leave me quite confident in suggesting you look elsewhere for training of this sort. read more

Hello, Since we last spoke I requested a refund for my costume, uniform, and slides. Can you at least send my uniform first? I will send you the rest the amount after I receive my uniform. I need proof that I am not being scammed before I send you more money. I've been deceived. I was told I was going to get these items and I'm confused because everyone in class had received their items and they did not finish paying. Instead of receiving any of my items I was told to pay more. I felt left out as apart of your halau from the beginning. It's not fair or just for me to send you hundreds of dollars and not receive anything. I payed you my tuition diligently there is no reason for me to be treated as an outcast. Especially when we were told that the remaining of the balance would not be due until after I received the package from you. Even after you continued to reassure me that it was coming, I trusted you and continued paying your class fees on time and participating. Regards I've messaged you privately as well by email and text. I look forward to your response either by email or phone as you have not responded to my previous requests for a refund with a denial or approval. I will take this down if not this will stay posted. As for the public I felt completely left out by the entire school. No one helped me take care of this and get my uniform. I watch new students come in and receive their uniforms and costumes and had not paid fully and I never received mine. My review is to not attend virtually at all. The experience was different for those that are in person obviously. I had friends and family chip in and help me attend this school and they looked forward to seeing me in my uniform and kept asking about it and never saw me in my uniform. I attended virtual private classes and group classes and paid for essentials to be a part of the team. Hula classes are expensive. I do not recommend this school. I enrolled my three-year-old for the first time here. It's been a little over a month and my daughter loves it! She's in the keiki hula every Sunday for 30 minutes. They offer her class online, which is so nice especially during this pandemic. The dancers have a nice uniform to wear and learn not only how to dance hula but the Hawaiian culture. I'm so proud of my little one for picking up the words so quickly (numbers, colors, body parts, and dance move terms). Kumu Lisa is excellent and has wonderful assistants. The so called "kumu" offered a $30 try it to see if you like it class. Needless to say I did not like it. She refused to reimburse my money. Very negative and not a good teacher. Joining this Halau has been an absolute joy. I appreciate the mixture of professionalism, fun, physical challenge and mental challenge offered in the hula classes. To know I am not just learning a new dance art form, but also receiving a cultural education. The welcome, grace and honor of the people within the Halau is so much more than I was seeking and I am grateful for it. There is a reason the word 'Ohana is in the name; they truly make me feel like family. This review is for anyone who is interested in joining a halau (whether it be for themselves or for their children.) Our family moved to Oregon from Oahu two years ago. Our daughter has been wanting to take a dance class and we figured that joining a halau would be a wonderful way for her to learn more about her ancestry and culture. We initially brought her to a free drop-in class, in which she did very well. Lisa Chang sought us out after the class was finished and praised her and said she did very well and would be a good fit, so we decided to register her for the summer session Keiki I class. We noticed that she was the oldest child in the class (she is 7 and most of the girls were clearly around 4-5 years old), but we thought it was acceptable seeing as how she had no previous experience. At the second class of the session, there was a parent meeting in which Lisa stated that in order to move up to Keiki II, we would have to pay for costuming (an additional $125 fee on top of the $240 charge for new student registration and summer session fees.) My husband asked if there were any other stipulations or requirements that would need to be met in order for our daughter to move up to Keiki II, to which Lisa said that our daughter was doing well and was ready to move onto Keiki II as long as we paid for costuming. The following week, we brought in the payment for her costume and she tried on another girl's costume for fit. Despite this, our daughter remained with the Keiki I class. At this point, we were evaluating whether or not wanted to continue with the halau. We felt the value wasn't there, both in authenticity and in the cost, but our daughter was enjoying it so we had planned to enroll her in the fall session. We felt like we were paying for a very expensive 30-minute once-a-week session of socializing. Our decision came down to our treatment, especially during the last two weeks of the summer session. We had been receiving emails speaking of a performance at the end of the session. At the second to last week, we were taken aback when our daughter came out after class and told us she wouldn't be performing. She had even danced with the Keiki II group at some joint practices so we saw no reason why she wouldn't have been able to perform. We had thought that by paying the $125, it meant she would be costumed and would thus be performing. We were very disappointed with the lack of communication and the overall experience so we told Lisa that our daughter would not be continuing with the halau. We emailed her to ask for her to refund us the $125 for costuming since our daughter never received a costume and was not invited to be in the performance. Lisa emailed back saying that we would not be receiving a refund for the costume (that we never received and was never even ordered as far as we know) because it was against their policy. This is completely unfair as we never received a costume and they never intended to costume her for this session. What was the point of telling us in week 2 out of 12 that our daughter would be able to move up if costumed. Lisa never communicated that she wouldn't be costumed during this session and we don't understand why she would need to collect money for a costume that would not be used during the session we had registered for. She also said that all children must complete a full Keiki I session before moving on to Keiki II and proceeded to direct us to their website. The website says that all children must complete Keiki I before advancing UNLESS GIVEN APPROVAL BY THE INSTRUCTOR. Flashback to the parent meeting at Week 2 where Lisa said our daughter was doing well and was ready to move on to Keiki II. That sounds like approval by an instructor to me. It is clear that this halau is seeking to capitalize on the Hawaiian/Polynesian culture and is more interested in money than educating people. Their practices are very shady; questionable at best. We were given the run around and much of what Lisa said was contradictory to something else that she had said. We have chosen to cut our losses and not fight Lisa over the wrongful costume charge, but we feel it is our duty to keep others from making the same mistake. We know many other families from Hawaii living in the area that have asked about our experience with Halau Ohana Holo'oko'a as they have young daughters themselves, but we have warned them to stay away from this halau and we have asked them to spread word as well. We have heard of another halau in the area that is much more authentic and much more in line with Hawaiian traditions and the aloha spirit, so we urge anyone looking for a halau to please look at other options before joining Halau Ohana Holo'oko'a. read more

FOR POTENTIAL STUDENTS Something of note, as you read this and other reviews - many of their 5-star reviews are for their performances, i.e. "they came and performed at my function, and they did great." I don't dispute that the halau may operate well in that capacity, so if that's what you're here for, then those reviews carry weight. I AM SPECIFICALLY REVIEWING THE HALAU AS A STUDENT, or parent of student rather. [Also, please read the older 1-star reviews, which may get buried because they're so old, but they are also from other parents... and I can personally attest that, contrary to what one other reviewer (Eliza) suggested as well as her silly comment about awareness of Polynesian culture, those are 100% still valid and very relatable to our experience!] For context, my family is from Hawaii - born and raised for generations. Prior to moving here in 2018, our daughter (who was 10 at the time) danced for over 3 years at a well-respected halau in Oahu - one that is committed, at its core to the traditions of hula and its dualistic role as a place to not just learn dance and some words but also to learn how to live as a representative of a unique cultural practice. It was important to us, after moving here, to keep her and her younger siblings connected to their roots in meaningful ways. Unfortunately, after being a member of Halau 'Ohana Holo'oko'a for almost a year (so believe me, we gave it an honest effort, as well as a good chunk of our money), this halau does not embody what we're looking for! Before we left Hawaii, we sought the counsel of trusted people we know in the hula community (our Kumu, other teachers, and dancers who have been dancing for decades) if they had a recommendation for us in this area. A halau in Vancouver, WA and another in Hillsboro came up positively a number of times. What we were warned about repeatedly, however, is that there are many halau's in the mainland whose roots are not even in Hawaii, that are more focused on capitalizing on the culture (some would say, exploiting) just to try to maximize profits. Halau 'Ohana Holo'oko'a never came up in our conversations - good or bad - so when we came across it, and the location was the most convenient for us, we gave it a try. Our daughter attended the free trial class, was clearly more advanced than the younger group, so she was even offered to stay and dance with the older group that day. We were told that she would likely be placed in the class with the older group once we signed up. When we signed up, however, she was placed in the Keiki I group (read as: the youngest group of beginner dancers). Much like the other reviewer's experience, she was in a class with what seemed like 4 and 5-year old's, most of whom have never danced hula in their lives - so it was an obvious disconnect in both maturity and skill level. We brought this up, saying that it didn't make sense for us to continue paying tuition toward something where our daughter was clearly not learning anything new. Only then did she get moved up to Keiki II and then, a few months later, to the Older Keiki class. (And I have all of these emails saved for reference.) To start her off in Keiki I with beginners half her age as if she had no prior hula experience, and then to keep her there until we finally complained about it, is not only disrespectful to her but also to her Kumu back in Hawaii. What ultimately made us arrive at the decision to part ways with this halau came just a few weeks ago. Our family was traveling back to Hawaii for two weeks through June and July, with the plan being for our daughter to stay there for the majority of the summer to spend time with family and friends back home. So we informed Lisa Chang that we would not be enrolling in the summer session. This was essentially Lisa's response - "If you don't enroll in the summer session, your daughter will have to start over at Keiki I and you'll have to re-register her (which means we'd have to conveniently pay the registration fee again!) You're more than welcome to continue to pay tuition through the summer to prevent that from happening." So she basically gave an ultimatum saying that we'd have to continue to pay or our daughter would be punished by having to start over (knowing how silly that was for her to be in that class the first time around!). There are other examples along the way (I reached the Yelp character limit, so I had to trim them out), but this was the most egregious example that THIS HALAU CARES MORE ABOUT MONEY THAN ANYTHING ELSE - including perpetuating the Hawaiian culture that it claims to embody. We shared our experience with folks back in Hawaii, and they were absolutely appalled by some of the nonsense with how this halau operates. They were equally amazed by how long we stuck it out, because most people - including parents of kids from our old halau - would have parted ways with Halau 'Ohana Holo'oko'a from the very beginning... which we should have as well!! read more

I guess with Hawaii being in the spotlight lately because of Mauna Kea, I've noticed a handful of friends interested in Hawaii "stuff", and have hit me up about my experience with this hula company. It isn't my experience, it's my nieces, but I was very involved with her then and I used to post about her hula adventures all the time on social, so people have hit me up to ask if she's still in it, how she's enjoying it, and all that, thinking about getting their daughters involved. So after all this time, I'm posting this, hoping that it reaches those people so I don't have to keep explaining it. My niece, who isn't a Hawaiian islander at all, has been fascinated with all things Hawaiian since her now step-dad came into her life. He was stationed there when he was in the military. This hula company's website touts their family naturedness. We brought my niece there were other Caucasian or mixed-Caucasian students (like me, my niece is Mexican-white, but looks mostly white), so we didn't feel outta place and immediately signed up. She's no longer at this hula company unfortunately, and she or her mom (my sister) didn't have a great experience at all. She opted not to post a review because my niece still goes to school with some of the current students. For that reason, I'll be a bit vague. But I'll start by saying you don't get what you pay for. Classes are about 30 minutes once a week, so you're limited in what you can possibly learn in that time frame. There seemed to always be new fees coming up, for costumes and rentals and sizing, and everything was a cash transaction. But the worst part was that it was very "cliquey". My niece never felt included or that she fit in, which is ironic because the company has "family" (ohana) in its name. And the "cliquiness" was present with the students, but probably even worse with the adults and the instructors. They clearly had their favorites. Those were the students they spent the most time with, they got all the attention, and everyone else basically got ignored or put in the back. Just pay attention at any of their performances and you'll instantly know who's in the "in-crowd." If your kid isn't, they get overlooked all the time. Their photographer's daughter dances in the hula, so it's no surprise that she's always front and center at every performance. It's not a welcoming environment. Most of the cliquey adults don't even say hi or greet you. The owner was attentive our first day until we signed up, then after that her or the other instructors rarely seemed interested in my nieces growth. Speaking of performances, I saw this hula group perform alongside another hula company from Washington at Umajiwaya (Asian grocery in Beaverton) a few years back for a Hawaiian festival, and the quality of the kids performance was night and day. If it was a competition, I lwould've felt so bad for my niece, because the other hula group went right after them, and they were so much better. But what do ya expect when you only hold practice for 30 minutes a week. Long story short, my niece hasn't been with this hula group for almost 2 years now. She's still very into Hawaiian culture. She even educated me recently on what's happening on Mauna Kea. So at least her experience with this hula company didn't make her lose interest. But I can't, with a good conscience, recommend this place to anyone who hits me up about it. In truth, I was in the middle between a 1 and 2-star review, and I'm prolly gifting them that second star by rounding up. read more

We found the studio online. It is one of only two hula studios in the Portland area, and the only one near Hillsboro. Our daughter has been in Hula for a year, and had danced two styles. Her instructor loved her, and we thought it would be easy for her to move into a new class here in Oregon. We were invited to come to a free class--classified as beginner, intermediate and so on. The teacher said she didn't know where to place her as she had not learned to speak the language--she was only taught the names of the steps. I had no problem with her checking all three classes. HOWEVER, when we arrived, no one greeted us. The class had begun and we had no idea because no one came at the appointed time to get us. We were expected to roam through a studio without permission to find the class. Then, we realized that the class is 3-5 year olds. Our daughter is nearly 13. These children had little blue flower stickers on their feet to help them remember right from left. This was obviously below what our daughter had done in the past. The teacher insisted that until she learned to count in Hawaiian, she had to take the beginners class. She said it might only be one week. Well, if you can teach it in a week in a half hour class, then surely, you can cover this to the side with her. I would not want a teen who may be much more mature acting to be with my five year old. I found it odd and our daughter felt totally out of place. She didn't want to go in. The teacher came out and insisted that she at least try. We walked in, but our daughter did not feel comfortably sitting in a circle with five year olds and I don't blame her. The classes are incredibly short --30/45 or 60 minutes for the price. It isn't worth the drive for a 30 minute class. The teacher acts as if she is the sole keeper of the Hula, and that it has to be her way...yet our daughter's teacher in Maricopa was highly certified, and got most of her education in Hawaii, not California. I wish I would have yelped it first and seen the previous poster. I hope I am saving someone else some time. read more

I am Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian), grew up in Hawaii, graduated from the Kamehameha Schools, studied nā ōlelo Hawaii for three years, and was haumana to three highly-respected hula masters over the course of 20 years (I do not have their permission to disclose their names). I performed on-stage in multiple Hawaiian reviews in Waikīkī, and performed with one of my hālau at the Merry Monarch Festival over the course of several years. I was at a Merry Monarch Festival in the early 1970s when a hālau from California performed. It was clear that their hula teacher (I would not call her a kumu hula) knew nothing of the hula. It was embarrassing; so bad that you could, unfortunately, hear the derisive laughter in the audience. The haumana (students) left the stage in tears. Immediately afterwards one of the judges took to the stage to scold the audience, to remind them that the haumana did their best to show what their hula teacher had taught them. Some years ago I enrolled my elementary school-aged son in Lisa Chang's summer session. I attended their end-of-summer performance (My Yellow Ginger Lei?). The performance was not what I had hoped for. Importantly, some of the "Hawaiian culture" that my son learned was absolutely incorrect. I had to review with him what he had learned so that I could correct the errors. I was also surprised by the lack of Hawaiian spirit demonstrated by Lisa or any of her assistants. It was clear to me that Lisa was no different from any other mainland hāole. Lisa Chang reminds me of that hula teacher from California. Lisa's lack of knowledge of the Hawaiian culture, and of the hula, is sorely lacking. It is egregious that she self-promotes as an expert on both. I don't believe that Lisa Chang is Kanaka Maoli, and it is eminently clear that she has NOT had any formal training in the Hawaiian culture or language, or by any respected hula master. In summary, as with many of the other reviews, it appears that Lisa Chang is in it for the money, without regard to the cultural or historical accuracy of what is teaching. read more

I am an online student who was brought to this halau as a result of a lockdown from a global pandemic. I have always enjoyed dancing but unfortunately never found the time to incorporate it in my busy life prior to the lockdown. So when tighter restrictions were imposed in my city (Toronto, Canada), I made sure that I was going to keep myself busy, happy and fit all at the same time. I had always wanted to immerse myself in hula dance and I was extremely lucky that Lisa has a strong online presence which gave me easy access to learn hula. Lisa is a beautiful dancer who inspires all of us who love to dance. She has beautiful technique and also dances from the heart, so it is such a treat to watch her move and express hula. It's difficult to teach/impart that gift on others (because any new dance can be intimidating) but Lisa has the ability to understand different dancers' bodies/techniques and how they can express hula's basic steps. I really appreciate that Lisa values diversity and not only welcomes but works with dancers with very different dance backgrounds. So despite the challenges of this year, I received the ultimate gift of dance thanks to this halau, connecting me back to my soul and reminding me of what matters the most. I want to say thank you to this halau for sharing your love, passion and knowledge of the beautiful art of hula. Lisa, you are a beautiful ambassador not just of hula, not just of dance but the enduring power of the human spirit that allows us to dance in the first place. I worked with Hula Halau 'Ohana Holo'okoa in June 2017 through a nonprofit organization. We wanted to add a fun surprise to our fundraising program and they were great. Lisa was easy to work with and was very responsive. The dancers were also very accommodating and flexible when the stage setup changed last minute. If I could give this business no stars I would. Basically I bought 2 Groupons for my daughters which included 12 wks (1x/wk) in the Tahitian dance program, receive 1 t-shirt, 1-skirt rental and 1 new student registration fee for $99 each. This is were it gets a little tricky and good customer service would have mediated the situation. I was told my daughters were not eligable for the voucher by the owner, Lisa, because they were not New Students. I was then told she wanted them to be able to participate, she just couldn't honor the voucher. I then asked since they were "returning students" would they still need to pay the New Student registration fee. I was told "yes all new students need to pay the registration fee". So which is it, are they returning students or are they new??? My daughters attended Hula (not Tahitian) classes over 5 years ago from a different location and under a slightly different business name! I left the facility stating that I would contact Groupon for a full refund since she didn't want to honor the voucher. Groupon contact her and asked that she reach out to me and try to mediate the situation. She contacted me via e-mail to let me know that she would be happy to honor the voucher and that I'd need to pay an additional $99/student immediately after the 1st class! WTF??!!! So she wants me to use the voucher I bought for $99 and pay an additional $99 per student. How exactly is this mediating the situation? Ok this is borderline insanity. I have never seen such blatant greed and such terrible customer service in my life. Funny thing is, she is 1 of 2 Hawaiian dance studios in the Portland Metro area so I would have continued my girls after the 12 wks and she would have made a crap load of money off me! Instead her business gets this honest but negative Yelp review! Groupon ended up refunding both vouchers in full...Mahalo to you. read more

I signed up for hula at this school as a method of excercise. Having had some knee surgery, I needed to strengthen my muscles in my thighs, and thought this would be a way to ease into it. Much to my surprise, I found that the class was SO MUCH MORE than just hula. The class prides itself on a "family" atmosphere, and it is so true. Part of the class is spent in socializing and sharing news. We also learn Hawaiian songs and some language and history. I was welcomed and made to feel part of the group, soon making new friends. I became fascinated with the Hawaiian culture, and have done some online searching to learn more about the islands and its history. The dance lessons are excellent, and our teacher is careful to take the time to explain any questions we have with the steps. I have seen the school in performances at the Rose Festival event and at the Performing Arts center, and also watched them perform in local parades. I am very proud to be a part of this group, and hope to do so for a long time. I give it five stars, as it is a complete culture experience. read more

My sister in law kept inviting me to try this hawaiian Halau about a year ago! I wanted to learn hula and Tahitian and I found it was really fun! Dedication putting our tahitian skirts together but building comraderie! Everyone helps one another and it's like family ..I have made alot of friends! Each person touched with Hawaiian culture in some way! :) you do pay for new costumes each year for the new dances but I learned that is typical in this type of dance! Or any dance year to year! This Halau needs more Aloha and less Attitude. As the class started the kumu hula promptly gave the lead over to Miss Teen Queen Attitude to work through their up coming performance routines, while those of us that were there for the first time were scrunched into a single line at the back of the class and left to fend for ourselves. This was not the experience I would have expected from a group claiming to instruct others. This was all about getting as many of us into the gym and telling us to "follow along as best we could." read more

The teacher disappeared into another room during my 30 minute class and was instructing another group of students, then came back in . There were assistants in my class but it still rubbed me wrong. It's double dipping.No hands on instruction. Just 30 minutes of " follow along as best you can" like the other reviewer stated. The class is ridiculously overpriced for what you get. I would like to thank Kumu Lisa for teaching me how to dance hula beautifully. Hula brings me lots of joy and fun in rainy Portland. I can't live without hula now. I arrived from Japan 7 years ago because my husband was transferred for his job. It was difficult spending my days without my job and since I can't speak English well I was in a very small Japanese society here. But now I'm in this lovely Halau (hula school) where I get to spend quality time learning hula and socializing with my hula sisters that are always there to support me.
