My husband and I were in the process of moving to Jefferson City with my sister (who was mentally challenged) and our pets. We discovered that my sister was terminally ill and I knew I would have to make funeral arrangements quickly. I remembered how wonderful they were when my father-in-law passed away two years ago. They made an unbearable situation bearable. They got to know me and sat and listened. It was especially hard because we had lost my mother just a year before. They truly cared and when the time came, they let me know that they would take good care of my sister. They were truly concerned with my feelings. I can't begin to say how much I appreciated their care and kindness.

I was given some very vague directions by a local, so off I went. There are a million dirt roads in Missouri, some lead to another road, some lead to a dead end, most are quiet and well maintained. I found this cemetery at the end of a dirt road, right before you hit the "W." As I was taking pictures, a very nice man came out to see what I was doing. My husband is writing a table coffee book on cemeteries and mausoleums and I have been tasked to find them and TRY and take pics. (I'm still working on that particular skill.) Anyhow, it turns out that Mr. Joe, bought the house across the street from the cemetery about 10 years ago. He told me that when he first moved in, he had no idea there was a small cemetery across the street. It was overgrown with weeds, tall grass and small trees, and by chance he saw a headstone one day. He decided to become the official caretaker and he began to clear, weed, cut down and clean up the property. He found out that many of the folks there were moved up from a cemetery near the bottom of Bagnell Dam, about 100 or so. Many of the headstones are of course, very old, some are handcarved and many are just stones. I found out the other day that many times, a rock or big stone marked the last resting place for a slave or, very poor neighbor. There are no military headstones that I could discern and many of the headstones are marked by official looking numbers. 5 stars, because someone loves this place and takes such good care of it. Mr. Joe, was kind, friendly and very informative. I will be back in the summer.
