My wife and have been a patients with the Shawnee Optical in Ashtabula for several years. We have both gone faithfully every year, getting every test recommended, and buying new glasses each time. Never had a problem, and everyone there has been very friendly. Unfortunately, I will not be a customer of Shawnee Optical anymore, due to the poor policy regarding refunds. I will explain: During my last visit for glasses the doctor talked to me about getting a pair of bifocal glasses this time. We had discussed that previously, and I was reluctant due to my tendency to have vertigo. The doctor explained that doing a lined bifocal is usually okay for that condition and doesn't cause symptoms in most people. I decided to go ahead and try that. The technician who was measuring for the bifocal said that if there was any problem and I couldn't wear the glasses that I could return them and they could make me a different pair. I called Shawnee to see how it works, as I am not able to adjust to the bifocal, and they said there is no refund, just a new pair...I had no idea that I would get no money back! The single vision glasses they will be making me to replace these are a lot less expensive than the over $400 I paid. Most places like LensCrafters and Walmart Optical will refund your money in full if you are not happy with your glasses, and I am totally disappointed and upset that this is not your policy. I cannot afford to pay $450 for a pair of reading glasses, which is essentially what I will be getting. I'm sure there's nothing Shawnee will do for me, but I just wanted to make everyone aware. We senior citizens cannot afford to go to places that don't take care of us. I don't know anyone of any age that can. read more

I have been a customer of Shawnee Optical for years. I always got new glasses there. Today, I had the worst customer service experience. I had a new prescription. The doctor indicated that it was close to my current prescription so I may not want to spend the money on lenses. Optician, Janet, helped me. From the time she sat down and began looking up my information, I did not feel confident. She didn't seem to know what she was doing. After the first quote, I asked for an explanation. She did not like my inquiry. She adjusted the the amount and asked if I wanted to pay with CC. I again said, I wasn't sure that I wanted to spend the money. She stood up, said "thank you" and left me sitting there. Very very rude. read more

the staff was very nice that's the plus. BUT after taken back to the exam room to wait for the doctor it took 45-50 minutes of waiting in the room. Was not a fan of that. No eye appt should be 2 hours from start to finish unless something was wrong. read more

As the owner of Shawnee Opitcal is now aware both prescriptions from Ashtabula, Dr. Fowler, aren't correct. $778.94 glasses. The Office manager who was there when I picked up the second lenses said they couldn't do anything else if this prescription didn't work. After 2 tries it wasn't the correct prescription. As I told Dr. Fowler that for over 35 years, I always had a curved lenses, but she refused to prescribe it and didn't listen to me. I even had my older glasses with me so she knew that the lenses had a curve. I may be old but not stupid as I was treated. I finally paid another $290 to another optometrist who examined my eyes and prescribed the correct curved lenses that I can now see. I have sent a letter and handed another to the Erie Shawnee office to the owners. So rude of them not to respond. They aren't the caring company as their statements address. At least have the decency to contact me and explain why Dr. Fowler refused my request. Even my ophthalmologist couldn't understand WHY my request for the curved lenses was ignored. read more

Perfect place to go if you want to overpay! Eye exam, 195.00 +80.00 for refraction. 275.00 total! Was asked, why did I care? Insurance covered it, well I do care! We are on a fixed income, have insurance through united health care, extra help for people on medicare. There is a yearly limit,This place wants to use it all for exam so not much left for glasses, quote for glasses 700.00 on top of insurance. We took prescription to Walmart, got glasses for under 200.00, Would have been 100% covered if shawnee hadn't hit us with the 275.00 exam. BTW walmart exam is 95.00 SAVE YOUR MONEY! read more

Before you struggle with poorly calibrated glasses, billing mistakes, and terrible customer service, do yourself a favor and ask if you can get your pupil distance on your prescription before you go in for an exam. They will not give it to you unless you order your frames through them. That has to do with profit, not healthcare. Dr Fowler is great if you can stomach the "10 minute oil change" approach to healthcare in the front office. read more

It's ironic that they say "open to all" because that is clearly not the case. I arrived for my appointment and was discriminated against due to a medical condition, and I was subsequently refused service. This is incredibly frustrating, although, I suppose it is helpful to know so I can spend my money at a place of business that has integrity and will respect my privacy and health conditions. I'm incredibly disappointed that this happened, and that it happened in the presence of my children. Although, I see the value in them seeing what discrimination looks like first hand. read more
