So this is a nice tribute to Velma Wortman. The library is nice, clean, well kept, and seems to have all the basics one expects in a library. Hopefully it will help give kids and others something productive and helpful to do.

This is such a pretty library. I lived in Greenfield when the new library was built, 1985. I don't…read morego in much anymore because I no longer live in Hancock County but on this day they had their Friends of the Library sale and we were passing by. The sale is over the course of a few days and is open to the public most of those days. On the last day it is a bargain day and you can take a bag or a box in and get a great deal on books. I was lucky to have been driving by on Saturday and yes I brought home more books than I needed. I love books. I use books in my art and if I find instructional books I cannot wait to devour them. Hopefully I will be driving by when it is time for the next one!

I've been to older libraries that smelled like history and legacy (that statement makes 100% sense in my head!). Yet, the main branch of Hancock County Library is the perfect mix of everything I want in a library. I am fortunate to call it my local library. I have fond memories of bringing my kids to the children's area (which is fabulous) to play, look at the salt water aquarium, or take part in a free LEGO workshop. Before we could stream any movie our hearts desire, we used to visit the library and let everyone pick out a movie for the weekend. When we first moved back from Alabama and lived in a small apartment in Greenfield, we looked forward to visiting the incredible Book Mobile that visited our complex each week. You can even request materials that will be delivered on the Book Mobile (a godsend when you have small children, like we did at the time!). When I used to do freelance writing and marketing, I would reserve a quiet room to get all of my work completed. It was the nicest office I think I ever worked in :) My son would even join me sometimes and play in the corner with his Hot Wheels. The staff is always kind, warm, and helpful. And the building is beautiful. I'm thankful for this library, and what it has meant to me and my family over the years. (I didn't even realize I had all of these memories until I started to write this review! I'm not crying; you're crying!) Libraries are one of the greatest contributions to society. Whether you are looking for a good book, need to get some work done, or just sitting and staring out the large picture windows... your local library is always there for you. And the Hancock County Library is among the best.

It was really quiet when I went in on a Tuesday afternoon, and I'm looking forward to coming in when I need to write! The teen section had several rows of books, which I love to see. There are study spaces right there too. I noticed a coloring station as well with option to ask for alcohol markers and fancier items. The children's area is a good size and full of fun! I brought my mini BFF with me and we played in there for a long time--and she would've stayed longer! They have a large wooden playhouse that they've made into a garden center. It has felt veggies, a gardening toolbox with plastic rakes and spades and such, gloves, an apron, seedling containers, fake flowers, etc. Other fun toys included wood blocks, plastic dinosaurs, puzzles, cars and trucks and a large town-road carpet to play with them on. They even had a felt "make your own pizza" station, which we loved too. All of this is on top of the computer stations and plethora of books for all ages of kiddos. There are also picnic tables outside under a small pavilion with a view of the birdbath and birdfeeders. I loved this library and will definitely be back!

Pei in 1969 with an addition by James Paris in 1987. What I noticed first was an incredible sculpture that stands in the Library plaza. The sculpture, known as Large Arch, was created by Henry Moore in 1971. Inside the library are high ceilings with a modern and spacious feel. There are large sections of adult books on the first and second floor. On the first floor are public computers, newspapers and other resources. There is a large teen area with skylights and comfy seating. In the basement are conference and a class room and an incredible children's library, complete with play areas and a puppet show stage. There is an outdoor patio off of the children's section. On the second floor is a indoor garden atrium that brings in natural light. The staff is helpful. There is a space where they sell excess and used books. There were several oil paintings by notable Hoosier artists. There is also a small veteran tribute near the front entrance. There is free parking on the west and back sides of the facility. I would put this library at the top of the Indiana libraries that I have visited.

And they've got so much more than books. I visited today and was offered a tour of their Digital Media Lab. Patrons of the library can take advantage of several 3-D printers and only pay for supplies. Cricut machines and software are available to create card, paper products, tee shirt transfers, mugs and more. A state-of-the-art video studio and several audio studios are available for aspiring performers. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and proactively helpful. I got inspiration for an upcoming project that I am working on for a family reunion. One of the staffers printed off information that I needed for my project. The children's area of the library is huge, filled with books, discovery lab, reading areas and an activity room. Toddlers were playing with a few toys during my visit. Upstairs, I found a massive collection of videos and adult books. Several banks of computers were buzzing with patrons taking advantage of the free service. The staff was friendly and happy to show where to find specific books. Comfy seating and work spaces are scattered throughout the facility. Several conference rooms can be reserved for community use. The building is beautiful with a modern architecture that lets in lots of natural light. There is a featured art wall in the lower level. A bookstore and coffee shop are available near the main entrance. There is a parking garage on the south side of the building complete with EV plug stations. Restroom facilities are upscale and immaculate. The library is an easy 5 stars and sets a high standard for libraries.

The library consistently offers free classes, helpful staff, and access to a wide range of resources that make it more than just a place to study or work. It genuinely serves the community. When I am there working or attending events, I always try to sit by the windows overlooking the courtyard. The view of the skyline is a bonus and makes long days feel lighter. They have periodicals, audiobooks, movies, tons of books, music, and even a seed loan. As in most libraries, it's very quiet with books on the racks and a number of computers around to look at the catalog. There are also a number of individual computer stations with online access for those who do not have their own available or want to use it for research. They have a big welcome desk in the middle that can help with customer service issues, as well as the checkout area with a few librarians there helping through the completely electronic process. I didn't even need to talk to anyone to check my books out. I scanned my card, scanned my books and printed out my own receipt. They have a couple of training rooms or public rooms that are able to be utilized by the public and run a summer book reading program for children, which was always very popular with my kids. I usually can find what I'm looking for. Sometimes things are checked out, but you can go online and check other local libraries in the system and reserve the books, have them sent to this library for pick up later, or just go pick them up myself at the other branch. Lots of kids in here today and activities going on all the time but they kept the kids quiet and did it in a way where the kids could have fun and learn all at the same time.

The children's section is the majority, it seems, which makes sense as most events here seem to be for kiddos, too. The teen section is limited to one of the shelves, which I find really sad. YA books are important, and having resources and "fun" reading material for teenagers matters. Plus, I myself enjoy a good YA read, so teens aren't the only ones missing out. The "adults" have plenty of shelves and they seem to divide out the content pretty well between categories. There are two small private rooms available for studying or working that would likely fit 5-8 people from what I've seen. Maybe a little more, even. The main library is pretty quiet every time I've gone, though, so it may not even be necessary for you if you need to settle in to study, read or work awhile. The hold pickup system and checking out is great! I can waltz right in, head over to the pick up shelves and find my items. Then the self checkout is so convenient. I've been in and out in five minutes before, which is so nice! Overall, it's a decent library branch! Things could be a little better, but I'll take it as is for now. :)

I stumbled upon the Carnegie Library while walking around downtown Muncie. I love visiting…read morelibraries when I'm in a new area, so I popped in with alacrity. First: It's oh-so quiet in this library. This is a nice place to just exist in silence. That said, this isn't your regular public library, with story times and such. This is a specialty library, and it's more like a repository for old things: old books, archives, vintage catalogues, genealogy information, local history and things like that. But they also have computers that you can use for free, and free wifi, and printers if you need to print something. I'm not from Indiana, so the ancestry records have nothing to do with me. But I think that's cool that if you grew up in Indiana, or have relatives from this state, that you might be able to find out some interesting information about yourself here. The people who work here look ready to help, but ultimately, they leave you the eff alone, which is nice. I got zero greetings, which is the exact number of greetings I wanted from a small, quiet library.

When Danville Public Library, also known as Danville-Center Township Public Library, was first…read morecreated in 1902, Danville was home to Central Normal College. Local businessmen felt that the community should also finally have its own public library. Danville received a grant from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie (the first of four Carnegie libraries in Hendricks County), and the library was birthed in 1903 with 1,000 books. Over the years, the library has grown with additions in 1979, 1999, and in 2016. Now, the library offers books, audiobooks, e-books, DVDs, magazines, newspapers, streaming digital services, and computer access/free wi-fi. While the library wasn't accessible in its early days, with each subsequent addition that has improved. While you still get the historic facade (and lots of steps), it's pretty easy to get into this two-story building now. As Katherine A. noted in her review, adult books (get your mind out of the gutter) are on the second floor, kids are on the first floor, and there are study areas and a classroom. There's a small parking lot and the area around the library is pretty good with access. I'm also a big fan of the Indiana Room, a source for genealogy (especially Hendricks county related) with cemetery records, court records, land records, church records, newspapers, and more. As an out-of-towner, sometimes you feel awkward when you go into a different town/city's library. I do it often when I'm on one of my Tenderness Tour events because they tend to be a safe place to rest, use internet, and use a restroom. Yet, I found folks here to be friendly and welcoming. I definitely would return when I'm in the area. Yes, this is a smaller library. If you're expecting to compare it to Indy's libraries, you'll likely be disappointed (except some of Indy's smaller branches like Spades). However, it's a lovely library with friendly people and even the patrons I met here were quite hospitable.

Danville Public Library began its roots as an Andrew Carnegie funded building which first opened in…read more1903. The original limestone neoclassical building stands as an entrance to the modern facility today. The facility has undergone three expansions and renovations over the years to modernize and accommodate the growing collection of books, audio and video collections and more. The most recent renovation was completed on 2017. Most of the historical features of the Carnegie interior were removed or relocated during the modernization . One of the original marble fireplaces was moved to the Genealogy Room on the second floor with some of the early paintings. A second fireplace mantle was relocated to the Children's play/work room. A new main entrance was added to increase accessibility to the facility. Adult books are stored on the 2nd floor, while children's books and a play area are located on the lower floor. A classroom and study area are also located on the first floor. Library administration has offices on the second floor as well. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and willing to describe the history of the facility. The library sponsors summer reading and other programs throughout the year. There is a small dedicated parking lot behind the building and street parking around the building.

Great chance to read books you might not have picked up otherwise and have some great discussions. Book Club meets the first Monday of every month. You can go to the library at anytime to pick up the month's book and there are bookmarks that show the books for the next couple months as well.
