Due to my past experience with church, I was extremely careful about which church I would be exploring. Reluctant even, finding any little reason not to join. After playing with our kids at Civic Park one afternoon, I literally saw the "signs". There were 3-4 Open Table Church signs setup at Civic Park providing enough information to pique my interest. Even then, I was hesitant to jump in immediately and wanted to research the church online before just walking in. The church was in its infancy, no over the top productions, a simple church that was there to put God first, to fellowship with other believers, and to study the Word. The church is open to those who are both new to exploring a relationship with Jesus and to those who want to continue to develop a stronger relationship with Jesus. The entire church plan and vision was laid out in front of me and I couldn't find any reason not to explore it further. My first day, I was welcomed with open arms by Ann Cooley. Pastor Wayne introduced himself to me and was interested in hearing more about my history and my interest in exploring Open Table Church. I was moved by the worship music lead by the awesome Wes Cooley, I was fascinated by Wayne's delivery of the message, and I fell in love with the OTC Community. God was telling me that this was the place for me to be. This was my new home where I can continue to develop my relationship with Him. It was also the perfect church to introduce to my wife and our kids who had little to no relationship with God and no history with a church. We have each found a home at OTC and it is now a part of our family.

Unfortunately that's not the case. A recent service showed that the pastor is using his pulpit to express his rather one sided political views. Thus both the lead pastor and associate pastors decided to focus, not on biblical teachings, but their own somewhat uniformed worldly views. It would be best to remember that Jesus refused to get into politics. He disappointed those who wanted him to lead a "revolution" against the ruling power: Rome. This church seems not to follow Jesus' example. It is eager to follow popular worldly trends rather than the Bible. Unfortunate given that they have nice facilities and location. But this type of world driven unbiblical claptrap is why "mainstream" Christian churches are losing members while Bible based ones are growing.

The church has a pretty large parking lot, but parking can still get competitive, especially for popular events. Inside, there are plenty of seats, and the stage is slightly elevated, so I was able to see most of the performance without any issues. However, there was a part with puppets that was a bit harder to see, even though I was sitting close to the front. Some heads were blocking the view, but technically, you could move to get a better spot. There's also balcony seating, which might offer a different perspective. If you're attending a performance here, it's a decent venue with good seating options, but you may need to adjust your spot for the best view.

Even though I'm Jewish, I occasionally end up at Mass or inside a Catholic Church. Gayle has a…read morecontinuing love-hate relationship with the Catholic Church, and I'm happy to tag along when the spirit moves her. My most memorable Catholic moments during the last few months were the Pilgrim's Mass at the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral (led by Archbishop Julián Barrio Barrio wearing a nice red kippah) and visiting Fatima Portugal. But perhaps the best example of religious Ying and Yang on that trip was visiting the Convent of Christ (Knights Templar Castle) and the old synagogue in Tomar during the same afternoon. Gayle's daughter-in-law regularly attends St. Mary's, although her son isn't a big fan of going to an occasional (and long) healing Mass in Spanish. So when we read on her Facebook page that they were going to Christmas Eve Mass, we offered to go along. We also went to Christmas Eve Mass at St. Cecilia (Ames Iowa) last year, but this time there would be no magical snow storm as we left. We arrived at 10 PM where we were treated to reflective readings and some pretty decent choir music (accompanied by cello, guitar, and piano). I particularly enjoyed a woman's trio singing Hallelujah. There's also a lot to admire about the architecture of St. Mary's, complete with a high vaulted ceiling, nice dark woods, good acoustics, and a main "welcoming" Jesus in the Sanctuary. And by the time the Mass started at 11 PM, this house of worship was full and festive. As it was way past my bed time, I had trouble staying awake during Mass. I enjoyed the style of the Senior Priest, but his homily didn't really inspire. However, I appreciated the warm and friendly nature of the congregation, the participative nature of the service, and that cute and smiling baby sitting right next to us. Best of all was leaving into the evening and enjoying that community Silent Night that you really only experience but once a year.
