Nice wine selection at competitive prices. Location is convienant for me and the store isn't too busy if you need help. On the downside, you should not buy your beer here. I purchased some Paulaner Oktoberfest today on 11/21/2018 at full price only to check the shelf date when I got home and noticed it was less than enjoyable. The shelf date (known as exp date to some) was 04/18. Although this is not a true "expiration date", shame on a business for selling this stock without making the customer aware of the issue. Nothing says they can't because beer doesn't technically expire, but there is a very discernable difference when the recommended manufactor shelf dates are not adheared to by the vendors. Sure, you can still sell it, but a customer friendly place wouldn't do it without your knowledge. Sorry, not in the habit of checking shelf dates on my beer. I give stores like this more credit than that, at least I used to before this experience. Anyway, if I can't trust them from getting over on me for simple beer purchases then I can't trust them for larger more expensive wine purchases without being skeptical. read more

Try this on your next visit - Ask them to help you take your favorite libations out to the car - THEY WILL! Sure, I can make 4 trips carrying out my beer, wine and alcohol BUT on my bi-weekly runs it's nice to back up the Tahoe pop the tailgate and watch the truck lower down on the wheels as my favorites get loaded. It's so easy to swing in to there easy-to-access location right off Justin road. Supporting Highland Village, ownership has options where they hang their sign and they chose the Village. It's my fault for going into this place thinking they would have lower prices. I think pride themselves in " convenience" . Good goody is relight down the road. Not one thing was at or under prices of drinks I have got before. Everything was marked up. We aren't in a alcohol shortage. We don't need to buy and scalp it. It's insane. Good luck staying here. If it was not a chain I would be okay with it, but this is not a "small business" trying to survive off of extra dollars per bottle. A very SHELLfish place. read more

A neighborhood liquor store in the most traditional sense: this smallish strip center enclave in the Highland Village area has a pretty distinct philosophy: stock things that most people expect to find, don't take too many chances with flavors or brands, wait for stuff to move off of the shelves. And by and large, seems like that's a pretty agreeable philosophy: they stock pretty much everything that MillerCoors or Anheuser-Busch are rolling out these days and watch the cash register light up. Which isn't to say that you can't get anything interesting if you're on the hunt for beer, you can - you just had better hope that the brands they have happening, such as they are, are interesting to you. 'Cause if they don't move fast enough, they're gone. I recognize of course that as a beer nerd this may be my cross to bear, and further, that most of the local folks are only too happy with the brands that they regularly buy. And I also get that perhaps they do just fine in the liquor categories (those are harder to jack up, IMHO), and perhaps the wine selections might surprise someone with an eye on vintages, but I'm going to guess not - I'm guessing they shoot straight for the middle. And while I could be wrong there (I kind of hope that I am, actually), I don't really know if it's the fault of the liquor store that doesn't challenge its public's palate, or the fault of the public for not demanding more variety. Either way, as long as this one's convenient, when I'm around this part of town I'll probably stop back in. read more

Very disappointing. I always try to shop at the local shops rather than chains but boy was I disappointed with this one. I went in and asked for a specific rose' wine and he told me, "oh that's been out for 3 years and I have never had anyone request it. I can order for you but you would have to buy the entire case." Surely... surely there was a better way to deliver that same message. I purchased some triple sec and didn't even look around after that and once I got in my car, I Yelped for another place I could get wine. I called them and they had it in stock. Very friendly and asked me if I needed them to hold a bottle, etc.... I just think it is sad that a locally owned shop would have an attitude any less than customer friendly and just plain old nice. I won't go back even though the outside was pleasant and they seemed to have a fairly nice size shop. read more

Jim Shellman is one of the nicest business owners around and he knows good customer service. He also knows his beer, wine and liquor and will make stellar recommendations based on what you like to drink. That Sweet Tea Vodka is fantastic! Jim has also been a tremendous help with quantity suggestions and stocking our events with tasty beverages :) The store is always clean and shelves are perfectly stocked all the time. I'd much rather go into a beer/liquor store with some friendly direction rather than aimlessly wander around a large chain store where the people behind the counter don't even say hello. read more

A decent full-service neighborhood liquor store, Shellman's keeps a consistent inventory of beer, wine and hard liquor in stock. The inventory is pretty static, so if you find a favorite there, chances are it will always be there. However, as another reviewer pointed out, if you're looking for anything more off the beaten path, look elsewhere as the selection will cater to whatever is "in". Not that there's anything wrong with that...but a little variety is nice sometimes. They also have weekly Wine-Tastings every Friday and my experiences there is the primary reason I won't be going back anytime soon. My wife and I used to attend them on a fairly regular basis, yet I always got the feeling we were crashing Jim Shellman's private party. There seemed to be an "In Crowd" of people that were friends of Mr. Shellman's. And if you're not one of them, good luck getting anybody to talk to you. Don't get me wrong...I'm not expecting a Red Carpet welcome, but one would expect a small store like this to value their regular customers. Local competition like Wine Styles and Crush offer a much more homey and adventurous atmosphere. And if I want the regular consumer brands, I'll just go to Goody Goody from now on. read more

No matter when I go to Shellman's I am greates with a smile, knowledge of choices and just a wonderful neighborhood store. They have a wonderful selection of wines and beers, it never disappoints. I love going somewhere where they remember you and what you chose last time. You just don't get that these days, especially at the larger stores in the area.
