Not only does it collect and sell the usual charity produce but it has a project called Starter Packs Glasgow. This project puts together packs of essentials household items for homeless who are aquiring permanent tenancies. They work through referals from housing officers, social workers etc. It's such a great idea and a very worthy project. Starter Packs Opening Times: Monday - Friday 10.00am - 4.00pm Please call prior to making donations by delivery. The Magpie Nest also run the Magpie Eco Fashion. Here they offer tution in dressmaking but using only reclaimed, vintage and retro materials. Not only do they have MEF but they have Fashion Workshop Classes too. They have a teacher/designer Annie who will help you in learning fashion design. The price for classes is excellent at £10 a head and they will supply the fabric and the resources. They also always have plenty events running from Rag & Bone Collections to Womble Up Your Scheme. Check their website for event updates. It's so close to the subway which is ideal if you end up coming away with loads of items! Stepping into The Magpie's Nest is like going into an Aladdin's cave of treasure - theres so much stuff! I love the amount of old crockery they have so if you love vintage looking teacups and saucers you will want to come here. They have two shops and both are really close to each other, the other shop has bigger items like sofas, tables and wardrobes and showcases handmade crafty items from local talented people. I remember being really impressed by the low price for things, if you're an up-cycler you will have a ball in this shop! The good thing about spending money here is that it's all going to a good cause as they give out starter packs to people who are struggling to afford basic but needed items for their homes.

I was in the area so made a point of calling in to see what stock they had in. It's not often that l see a modern well stocked & organised charity well this shop this one of those What did they have? There was rails of modern & vintage clothing with window displays that where thought out most items where vintage - retro & collectable small selection of jewellery in two display cabinets. There are shelves around the shop some had women's bags others had modern items but everything seemed like quality, there was no tacky ornaments or what l see as junk. Expensive? Well not really I've been to some charity shops and found others that I've been to very expensive and can source items that they sell cheaper brand new. The prices here where pretty good. I managed to pick up some collectable pint glasses at £1 each l also found a game controller for £4.99. This Bernardo's charity shop is a pretty good one and if you are looking for some good vintage items you would love this shop. Definitely be back.

So by default, I like Oxfam. I'm not one for buying vintage clothes, but if i find myself browsing in here I always feel I should at least buy something, leading to a shelf full of ornamental mice and ducks that cost about 50p each, and might prevent me going to hell come judgement day.

The Govanhill Oxfam is one of the many Oxfams that specialise in books. Because of their extensive…read morenetwork, they are very effective in terms of pricing: it is rare to find an old record or first edition at a bargain price, but it does have a very well appointed selection, with plenty of books arranged by specialism. After a few years where the shop struggled to open all day, they now have a team who seem to really know their stuff: not the cheapest, but usually fair, with lots of vinyl and even comic books, now and again. The specialisation of charity shops in recent years has made them less of a joy to browse, but this stands as something of a Southside oasis, almost compensating for the lack of a proper book shop.

In modern days they don't want your donations of clothing or quality items but to sign up to a monthly direct debit and as soon as they have your details your hounded on the phone for more money. This charity pays chuggers to patrol the streets and harass innocent shoppers day in day out to sign up to their direct debit scheme, l call it modern day robbery.

Even if you're not of the thrifty charity store type, it's worth keeping an eye on the window of this place as you pass by. They generally stick their best products in the window display with a great big fluorescent star stuck on it telling you the price. Recent such items include a nearly-new top of the range pushchair for £60 and a cute pair of Chanel pumps for £20. See what I mean? Worth keeping an eye out.

When l think of a charity shop l normally think of charitable donations from members of the public, but sadly charity shops have changed over the years and the number of items that are bought in brand new to sell outnumber the donations. With staff that don't talk unless they are demanding payment it actually sadly sounds like most other charity shops in the area. I do remember a changing room in this shop many years ago but they converted it into an office for all the managers & supervisors that they employ. This was once a good shop, now it's one that l deliberately pass to avoid.

During the bright sober light of day, it's very easy to mosey on past; but in the deep, darkness following several happy hours it is mesmerising. Their stock mostly consists of somewhat dodgy cloths; dog eared books and those strange ceramic ornaments that are surely not still being made but are seemingly forever multiplying. However, with this stock they manage to magpie out the shiniest items and arrange them in a pretty decent display in the window. So, the chances are your incoherent attention will be grabbed by the window display. Yet, when you purposely revisit the window of wonder, all will not seem as it did. On closer inspection, the merchandise is just as you'd expect in any other charity shop (if not worse). Good enough for a quick look and the window displays often show the best item so there's less call for you to rummage around. However, the true gems from here will be few and far between. Though, the drunken awe is always a nice experience.

I've found some nice little bits of bric a brac in here very cheap to decorate my home with, but unfortunately the clothes aren't so great - mostly primark - which is fair enough, considering it is, after all, a charity shop, but why would I buy primark gear second hand when I can get it for only a couple of pounds more brand new from the shop itself? The lady serving was all chat and gave me a run down of coffee prices in the area, concluding you get the best milky coffee from the church cafe across the road (80p). Apparently they'll also do you a bowl of soup for a pound. Still too much for me to reconsider my position on faith but handy to know should I ever see the light. Once we'd sorted out the truth about coffee cartels in Glasgow, the volunteer allowed me to leave my books for collection at a later time which was a nice touch. Good cause.

It's got the strangest mix I've ever witnessed in a charity shop - buggies, clothes horses, bic-a-bracks and the odd sink thrown in (literally). For this reason, I have a pretty big soft spot for this charity shop having lived just around the corner from it for a couple of years. I've bought a few teapots in here (mostly to then be used as plant pots - but still). As well as a rather horrible country lady ornament for last mother's day. I know it was a bad thing to do and not really in line with the mother's day sentiment but it was worth her initial response... Get trotting along.
