This was our final hotel that my family and I stayed during our Newfoundland trip. Not surprisingly with most Sheraton hotels, their upkeep here is excellent and it feels upscale compared to other hotels. After staying in various hotels across the province, it's nice to have a place in a large city (by their standards) where I can walk outside and have multiple choices for restaurants and bars. My room was large and brightly lit. Clean as well. Lots of TV channel options, and the TVs themselves were of excellent quality. A/C was a bit loud initially, but I eventually acclimated to it. Overall no complaints at all with the hotel. read more

I stayed here for several nights during a business trip and overall was happy with the accommodations. As some others mention, the rooms could use a little TLC and updating; mine specifically smelled quite strongly of mold when I first turned on the AC, but it eventually went away/I got used to it. The staff is really accommodating and pleasant, so no issues there. Location wise, within walking distance down the hill to Water Street, George Street , and a quick cab ride up to Signal Hill (unless you are interested in a steep hike). read more

Decent room to sleep in. Beautiful lobby and courtyard. But rooms are outdated and show wear and tear. Need updating to align with the facade of the lobby areas. Housekeeping did a fine job. Some guests seem to have difficulty with their reservations, and while we asked for a king bed-- we were given a queen, but with parking discount. A week previous we had confirmed with the Sheraton Newfoundland my reservation details and sent them a credit card authorization form to pay for my stay. Checkin was at 3, I arrived at 330 and the room wasn't ready so they were trying to put me into a lesser room. I said no I ll take an upgraded room if anything. So then, they tried to make me pay 1200 for the room when my company already sent the pre authorization form for our credit card to bill to our company. The front desk clerk Erin would not listen to me and insisted I had to put it on a card. I said no, I have the emails and she kept cutting me off saying it wouldn't matter. There was no customer service or conflict resolution for a loyal customer I asked for a manager - the manager comes out and wouldn't listen to me, I had to give him my phone and show him the emails. He took my phone from me, saw the emails himself - check the surveillance footage on this. He kept talking over me and trying to tell me to be professional when I was upset by this point visibly but not irate or profane. I was def louder but not out of line and they continued to act like I was wrong He ended up telling her to check me in, this all happened in front of other guests. He walked into the back office and said nothing else to me. He didn't say a word to me after but just huff's and puffed away and went into his office. It was 430 before I got to my room, it took them an hour of me standing at reception to get me into a room... not an upgraded room, the standard room I ordered. No apology, nothing. Take your key and here you are. I called Marriott corporate and filed a complaint and I'm waiting to hear from the GM. It's 1130 at night and still nothing - I went and had dinner at the hotel restaurant and signed my bill to the room. To make an already atomic situation worse, the same Erin called my room to tell me I must come down and pay for my meal because I could not charge to the room like any other guest. They said they had not seen the credit card authorization forms when they had been emailed and I physically showed the manager upon checkin. I updated this review after the hotel person Erin , the same one that I originally had the problem with called me again to tell me nothing could be billed to the room. It's 11:46 now , still haven't heard from the GM and nothing back from marriott read more

Beautiful but unprepared. We had reservations here as a group. We wanted to make sure to come check in and be ready to spend the night in town as we were here for one night only. we were tired and hungry at that point from flying to the location. all our group wanted was to have a room shower get some dinner and go ahead to rest To our surprise during our check in we all were told that an event earlier during the week had the guest use late check out and the rooms were not ready, they only had 5 rooms for 20 people. we waited over an hour to here they ended up giving us 2 rooms so we could at least change and go eat, NOW if you see that as a nice action on their part I would think again, everyone who came into the hotel besides us seemed to get rooms. Our group was the only on from the moment we came in that were in the lobby that had to sit around and wait for a room. Now, I see that if you have a large event things can get hectic but come on this is a huge chain of luxury hotels and it is unacceptable to not be ready for a reservation of whatever nature it is. even worse when you isolate the large group but keep giving rooms to all other guests that drive in the hotel, that means that our rooms were being bumped..... They tried to give us a complementary breakfast voucher (as they charge for their breakfast) to try to amend for their lack of hospitality to our group. however in the morning when we went for breakfast, there is an line, they do not let you just come in serve yourself and keep on with your day. they control the line of individuals that come in and they are so messy that some of our group didn't have time to come in and eat because of the lines. the rooms are pretty and the views are good that is the only positive I could gather from this experience. everything else was a let down for me, even the parking is paid! They should take a serious look at themselves and get their things together, the experience I had in this hotel was disappointing and I would NEVER recommend this location, It was so upsetting to have to go through all of this for this hotel that is not even CLOSE to the downtown, you still have a 15 minute walk if you want to go to the downtown area. NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY AT ALL. read more

This was a wonderful stay. Abarna was a great host with a permanent smile that makes the reception feel special. We were upgraded to an upper floor with a harbour view and free parking. The first morning we had the breakfast buffet and it was very good. The cleaning staff kept our room very clean. our room was clean but the bed was terrible. We asked for a different room for our last two nights and the hotel staff were very helpful. The bed was like we were sleeping on a box spring with a couple blankets on it, terrible. We moved from the third to the sixth floor. The bed was marginally better. probably due to the bed being newer. Also the water pressure was better on the third floor than the sixth, strange. Also the pillows in both rooms were terrible. Another issue I have with hotels and this one was the same is there was only one comfortable chair to sit in. One person either sat on the bed or the office chair. The location of the hotel was excellent and the amenities were good. $10 a day to park at the hotel was also cheap. We won't be staying here again nor do we recommend this hotel. read more

I am writing specifically about the bar in this hotel. Plump, flavorful fish and chips. Cod is in season! Chips were just right, served wth malt vinegar. Local beer on tap. Service is friendly and efficient. Our bartendress told us 'We are more Irish than the Irish here.' And I believe it. Everyone in St. Johns sounds wayyyyyyyy more Irish than Canadian. The little fishing town is a mix of Maine meets Key West meets Dublin. The atmostphere is waterside streets, pastel-coloed houses (that's where the Key West comes in), hills, and great seafood. I am sad that my layover was so short. Others who had longer did a whale watching tour and a puffin tour. 12 hours here is really a tease. At any rate, don't miss the bar food here- you would be amiss not to let that succulent cod melt onto your palette. read more

My second time staying here at the Sheraton Newfoundland. I would declare this the nicest hotel in St John's (i've stayed at the HI on Portugal Cove Rd + Delta previously) and has some awesome harbour views (if you are lucky enough to get a harbour view). Alas my room was $179 but in the summer this hotel goes for roughly $300 a night. The lack of hotels in St John's and the high demand in the peak summer season makes for a precarious situation for travellers. If you book late you will either pay the top end of premium for rates or may be forced to stay in something below your comfort levels. The room is your typical Sheraton comforts. Wonderful bed with lots of pillows and very very comfortable. Room size is decently generous and I appreciate that the washroom isn't your usual "open the door" hit the toilet small! The hotel is well located for all the shops and restaurants just a short brisk 10 minute walk away from all the action on Water Street of the shops and restaurants. Just be prepared as it's a good walk uphill on the way back. Good exercise after eating a good meal! Service from the front desk was courteous and pleasant. Overall a very good experience. Some parts of the hotel could use some more refresh but it's close to up to Sheraton standards. read more

I stay in many hotels. There are some small things that make a big difference to me. Friendly staff: They've got em. Good 'ole Newfoundland hospitality. Comfy bed and pillows: Yessssss! I get an amazing sleep here. Fridge AND microwave in room: Check and check. It's always a nice bonus to get a microwave in the room. The fridges here are huge! Deluxe size. Location: Love it. Smack dab between downtown and Signal Hill. You can walk downtown easily in 10mins. And the start of the walk up Signal Hill is just 1 block from the hotel. Bonus: The VIEWS! If you get a city view, it's really pretty and nice with all the St. John's charming row houses. But if you get a harbour view... WOW, you can't beat it. I usually stay on the top floor and I wish i could look out on a view like that all the time. Also, one gloomy day ordered room service instead of venturing out for dinner. I got the salt cod croquettes and a bowl of french onion soup. Both were delicious and hit the spot perfectly. I'd order again for sure. Only one con to this hotel would be the water pressure. Although the bathrooms are really nicely renovated with beautiful fixtures, and they also have nice toiletries, the water pressure is definitely lacking. It's a bit of a bummer, but not a deal breaker at all. A great place to stay in St. John's! read more

My stay at the Hotel Newfoundland was pleasant. Front desk and bell services from (I believe her name was Valarie) were outstanding and above industry standards. My room was clean and well taken care of, even though we didn't require any daily house keeping. Sadly our arriving flight was delayed and the airline lost our luggage so we were without a few items. Valerie from bell services provided us with the amenities we required. Sadly the services from the restaurant left something to be desired but I will highlight on that in another posting. The only downfall during our stay were the prices of parking. At the price we paid, you'd think parking would be included. Unfortunately it was $15 a day. Other than that I'd say we had a great stay and would recommend the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland. read more

This hotel is simply just adequate at best. Reasonable rooms, extremely noisy hallways and walls and ceilings. Hopefully your neighbours will not be noisy. Bathroom smells mouldy. Breakfast was included with our stay but there's about 45 different rules that I wasn't familiar with. You get a breakfast voucher but apparently that's only for the buffet. It depends who your server is whether that's actually the case. Serving staff appear as if they're serving 100 people there's maybe 10 people in the restaurant. The buffet may not be reasonable to serve two dog. Coffee is five dollars it's worth five cents. Front desk staff are clueless. read more

I always look forward to staying at this hotel. The staff are always gracious and helpful and the location is fantastic! This building itself is quite old but it is slowly being renovated - new carpets in the hallways, restaurant facelift, etc. Most of the room I've stayed in have 2 double beds, each one stacked with 4 fluffy pillows and a luxurious duvet. This is one of the obvious "Sheraton" hallmarks. There are lots of plug outlets throughout the room - I think most recently I counted 5 in the room, one in the bathroom, and one in the vanity/coffee area (x2 outlets, that's amazing for a hotel room!). That and the free Wi-Fi makes any tech-savvy traveler very happy! Each room has it's own coffee/ tea maker with Starbucks coffee and Tazo teas. There is an empty mini fridge under the TV - very important if you want to chill your own beers (it is St. John's after all!) or stash your groceries. The bathroom is spacious and clean, with Bath & body works products (Mandarin Mint scented products). There is lots of counter-top space for your makeup bags/ shaving kits, a proper blow-dryer (not one of those stupid things attached to the wall) and if you're not a fan of using hotel glasses, there are also a couple of individually wrapped plastic glasses. There is a great fitness center in the lower lobby with a pool. I hesitate to call it a "basement" since the hotel is built on a hill and the lower lobby has an exit out to the street. My only minor complaints about this hotel is the very old heating/ AC system. It's a loud fan on one side of the room. I find that when I get in I usually blast it to heat up or cool down my room and turn it off for the night because it's just too loud to sleep with it on. Second is the mark-up on their room service menu. The menu hasn't changed, but the prices have gone up compared to the rare occasion I ordered room service when this hotel was still part of the Fairmont chain. That said, it is always presented beautifully and delivered by a friendly face (even at 5:45 am @_@). read more

It was a beautiful hotel with a giant gym and a nice pool and great rooms, we didn't have breakfast there due to the price but that was okay. My wife and I recently stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks during a move. Check-in was relatively quick, with Stephen (the check-in agent) getting us a newly remodelled room since we were there for so long. On the first floor, but no big deal. After check-in, I was surprised to find there was no DVD player in the room, as our confirmation stated that there would be. I contacted the front desk, and got Stephen, who informed me that none of the rooms had DVD players, and that since Sheraton had just taken over the hotel, it was probably a glitch. He said he'd comp 3 movies to our room for the inconvenience. He then called back about 10 minutes later and said that he had managed to find a DVD player, and that it was ours for the full 2 weeks of the stay. Awesome. The bed was the same as those in any Sheraton, amazing. My first words getting into it was "It's so fluffy I'm gonna die!!" This was a huge plus, as the last place we had stayed in St John's (the Extended Stay Deluxe) had a horrible bed. Many times throughout our stay, we were still in the room when housekeeping came around, with the Do Not Disturb sign still up, so they would leave a note saying to call the front desk to schedule cleaning. This worked great most days, however there were a couple of days that we had no housekeeping at all, even after calling the front desk. This wasn't a big deal for us, but I put it out there for information. Over the course of our stay there, we ate in Bivver (the bar) twice for a late night snack. Quite possibly the best fish and chips I've ever had. The dessert was also amazing, and huge. Considering that we were in a hotel, prices weren't bad either. We also ate in The Narrows twice, once for breakfast/lunch and once for supper. While we were there, there were renovations going on in the main restaurant, so The Narrows was in a temp location, and food had to be brought across the hotel from the kitchen to the dining area. This didn't seem to cause any issues, as food was still brought quickly, and still was still hot when it arrived. Again, good food, and not ridiculous prices (although probably more than you would pay in restaurants outside of the hotel). Overall, we loved the hotel. Staff was all very friendly, and many of them went way out of their way to try to help us. Location was great, we could walk to most restaurants downtown, and it's not far from a lot of tourist areas like Signal Hill, The Rooms and the Basillica. I'd definitely stay again if we had a reason. read more

Stayed in Aug 2016, expecting a decent hotel. Not so. Overpriced and very shabby rooms. Unbelievably, the bathtub and tiles were outlined in mould, the sink was clogged, our curtain was torn, TV remote didn't work, and the carpet was stained. According to the manager (who just laughed off my complaint) the hotel is due for a complete "to the studs" reno. Maybe. But I won't be back. read more

Loved this hotel!! City view is better and cheaper. Rooms are very clean. Beds are like nests. Complimentary coffee next to the main floor elevator early in the morning. Reservations Not Honoured !! Our family reserved 2 rooms for 5 nights stay at this hotel. Reservation confirmed, 2 Rooms, Water View, 2 Beds Per Room. We arrived at 11:30 pm and were given rooms with 1 bed, and were told that if we didn't like it we could go to another hotel. This was at 11:30 pm, having just arrived from the airport after a long flight with my 4 year old son. We didn't have a choice but to sleep in the sub-par rooms the management deemed suitable for us. I slept on a cot. The adjoining room partied all night and we did not sleep. The following day the Director of Operations, Derek Hiscoke, has the nerve to tell me that I backed into the valet parking sign with my vehicle in the middle of the night. The hotel Management, Sharon Casey, Derek Hiscoke and Dennis Davies have all proven to be incompetent, arrogant and they could not be bothered. Never have I seen anything like this. The hotel did not charge us the first nights stay and they seem to be under the impression that they have done us a favour. Truth is that we would not have flown to Newfoundland had we known that the Sheraton St. John's did not honour reservations and couldn't care less about the well being of their clientele. read more
