Angels Hotel

We went for a wee trip to meet my dad, and chose Uddingston as our place to eat. I picked Angels…read morefor its reputation amongst locals. It's a bit of a tardis, it looks like a old Victorian sandstone house from the front, but it expands back and to the side - a lot. We walked through the nicely-appointed and bright housey bit, the bar, and into the large, smart, dimly-lit restaurant. We were greeted pleasantly and shown to our table. The A la Carte menu looked pretty appetising and I went for Scallops with Black Pudding to start and the Chilli Chicken & Chorizo Stir Fry for the main, Miss Nibs went all old-school and had a Classic Prawn Cocktail and Beef Stroganoff. The scallops came quickly and were extremely creamy, almost slightly undercooked for my taste, but good, the plate covered in a honey, lemon and chilli glaze in a lattice pattern. Pretty good start I thought. My partner's prawn cocktail was nice also. The mains came in good time too, and she enjoyed the beef stroganoff. She eats quickly and this leads on to the next point. Both my dad and myself eat less quickly, and by the time I was even close to finishing my plate the food was cold, why, well because the plate it was served on hadn't been warmed. Bit of a cardinal sin that! As father said the sign of a disorganised kitchen? The stir-fry itself was served with too much rice, and to be honest given the fact there was chilli AND chorizo in it, it lacked zing and was a bit insipid, it was not unpleasant, but not the fire-breathing torture fest I was hoping for. We had a nice pint in the bar afterwards. Would I go back? For sure. Was it great? No it was pretty decent. Gotta be a three overall.

My starter arrived which was beef satay and straight away I spotted a hair in my meal but as I was out with some good friends I hadn't seen for a while I just asked for the serving staff to take it away and let my friends finish there starters. The manager came out and asked if he could get me anything else and I tried to be understanding and told him it was fine and I would just try my main meal when it arrived and when it did it looked great madera chicken with mash and veg and so I started to tuck in and if the first instance wasn't enough r there at the bottom of my plate was another two hairs stuck to my plate. This is the worst experience I have suffered at a restaurant ever and my friends all stooped there meals also. I strongly suggest you avoid this restaurant for your own health and safety as this to me is just scratching the surface of the real issues in the kitchen here. If I could have give the place negative stars I would.

The locals claimed that it normally wasn't needed for the climate. But I thing the management here needs to consider offering more than just a small fan. Each room has a heater, so I would recommend this hotel in cooler weather without hesitation. I had a clean, comfortable and QUIET room considering the wedding. Scottish breakfast was very good. I tried Haggis for the first time. If you ever watched the movie Highlander, Christopher Lambert describes Haggis as "meat and barley boiled in a sheep's stomach". MMMM doesn't that sound good? (NOT) Well, I found it to be a bit like corned beef hash, but much less salty. Not my _favorite_ breakfast food, but I am glad I tried it. They also offer roasted tomatoes, sausages, scrambled eggs, custom omelets, yogurt and fruit. I only ate breakfast here, so cannot rate the lunch or dinner menu.

The food served is of a high quality with a special mention for the mixed grill - the amount of food is so huge, rumour is no one has ever left an empty plate, I can confirm that! I have never stayed here so wouldn't dare comment on the rooms or the service and so this review is off the bar alone, which itself is pretty good - small quiet and cosy, with an excellent beer garden. The Bothwell Hotel is a real homing point come a sunny day. Literally everyone ends up here, drinking cider on the grass, swatting away the bees and wondering how on earth we can be bothered with the wind and the rain we are normally lumbered with here in Glasgow. It's been here for years too which gives it a real sense of itself. It was formally known as the Country Club - most people, including myself, still call it this.

Now that I know it's here I'll definitely visit again if I find myself in the area. I should probably say that we were here for dinner and drinks. We didn't stay in the rooms but, if my experience is anything to go by, I suspect that they're lovely. My partner and I arrived a little early so got some drinks at the bar and then spotted that they have seating outside on a small balcony area. Since it was sunny we decided to sit outside while we waited for everyone else. Its a beautiful spot. If you're local to Uddingston and you're after a nice beer garden to relax in on those rare summer days - this is your place. Soon the others arrived and we moved to a private room that we'd booked for our party of about 30 people. Drinks orders were placed but they already had wine and prosecco on the tables for us. The set menu had apparently changed a little from when the booking had been made, but everything sounded delicious so that wasn't a problem. They ran a separate menu for the younger children too. I chose the tomato and mascarpone linguine, the steak (served pink with chips and peppercorn sauce) and the berry pannacotta. I was very happy with my choices although the soup of the day and the game pie also looked brilliant. Everything I tried was delicious and I was pleased that my steak was as pink as I was promised it would be.

Reservation maybe required as most places seemed to always be booked and full. There was tables available when we arrived but it did filled up as dinner went. Menu wise, plenty to choose from. As well as the drink menu. Didn't go to crazy this time as I was only craving a salad. We did share some mussels between the table. Everyone meals did all look amazing. Service was good with our waitress. Everyone who was working all was quite friendly and attentive. Downfall, they don't know anything or heard of Yelp. Even though they have a page. Dinner is unbelievable, a full three course meal for £10 - I dont know how they do it. Good choice too. Ok not haute cuisine, but very acceptable. Would have been at least £20 anywhere else. They could possibly go up market a bit with the food, and might get more locals coming out for an evening meal it could be they don't bother because its so cheap ! In otehr words, maybe counter - productive. But what a let down at breakfast. Not many hotels do a hot buffet successfully and this was one of the worst. Too much bacon in the tray meant all the stuff on top was cold, and its was poorly cooked , anaemic, fat not cooked at all , and also horrid sausages, which seemd to have no meat content, and be primarily filler and monosodium glutamate. Egg was gelatinous scrambled stuff. I realised too late that a fried egg was possible only to special order, but then it would have been a wait , and I already had a plateful of stuff. Why didnt the breakfast receptionist mention fried eggs were available ? The fried bread was also the worst ever, the crust around it was so solid it couldnt be cut without the table shaking so then your coffee (mediocre) spills over . What a pity , a good breakfast would have meant a 5 star rating. I can barely bring myself to score it with 3 stars
