Considering the church was erected shortly after the US became a country, I'd be hard pressed to say this wasn't in amazing condition. The older the church, the worse the ventilation. Summer time can be brutal here, even if the fans are running the crowds definitely keep the temps up. Evenings are another story in church land, barely anyone is around to disrupt the tranquil vibe. The interior is well kept, clean, and the pews aren't too hard on the knees. Whew. If you find yourself here early on a Sunday, enjoy the impressive choir and cheeky priests. Parking is limited in the area, but then again, it's DC. Park a block around the corner and make the walk to the front steps.

Pastor Donna is dynamic and preaches solid, Biblical, life-applicable sermons. Members are truly interested in getting to know new-comers and helping them feel at-home. There are opportunities for ministry and mission in the community. As of this review, the congregation averages around 110 in Sunday morning worship .... and growing. This includes an expanding childrens program for the little ones. MVP is excited to be a Reconciling Congregation ... meaning that ALL persons are welcome!

They offer free concerts from classicist musicians, such as in honor of Earth Day or Mother's Day. The Spanish mass will have special ceremonies, even marches. One criticism has to do with some loafers who hang out on the steps, the same pair always panhandling. The last two times I ignored them, and one of them hissed at me and followed me inside with a threatening stare (as if to ask who the hell I thought I was to not say hello back). I don't say hello because then they want me to give them cash. They leave from the steps after mass, but they time their visits to the church for mass times and then don't even come inside for mass. Maybe the church can put up a sign on the steps saying "No Solicitors Please."

They use to live in the ghettos of Boston where there were as many funerals there as there are wedding in DC. They opened their house to the neighborhood children who often didn't have enough to eat or needed a safe place. On a side note regarding the post on Chinese New years, all the Christians I know in China and Taiwan celebrate Chinese New Years because it's a time to connect with family and friends and to share and tell them how much you love them. It's not easy being Christian in China and some of them have given up professions, suffered persecution, and are barely scrapping by, but they celebrate Chinese New Years....maybe differently from others....like with prayer and church services along with visiting family, feeding and helping the poor and witnessing to them. Chinese Christians definitely celebrate and share Christ's love during the two week national celebration!

The first thing about these Candlelight Concerts are, literally, the candles: hundreds of candles scattered along the floor, then out came the string quartet who cycled through both ABBA and Queen's greatest hits. Lots of fun! One observation - Bohemian Rhapsody sounded like any other classical music piece when performed by a string quartet. If I have another opportunity to see a show at National City, I won't hesitate. You shouldn't, either - the venue is great!

The church is another example of all things DC from the architecture to its practices. Great historical building to visit whether religious or not. The church was built in 1930 and is considered a landmark. Architecture consists of lovely stained glass windows with a neo-classical design element. They offer weekly Mass on Sunday, a food pantry, and more. The church is welcoming to all regardless of race or sexual identity.

You get a cut of cornbread, a slice of white bread, a choice of dessert ( strawberry, vanilla, chocolate layered cake ; cookies; ice cream) that was extra. Then you get a drink like fruit punch. Cash was cheaper since it was a $10 minimum when you charged on your card. You would go through the line and get it for dine in or to go. Well... that all changed 2 years ago and they had to close because they became too popular. A good reason to close, but sadness came upon the land. Fast forward to the year 2019 and now they are open the second Tuesday of each month to serve the homeless and community for free. Yes, that's right. I found out by walking by to get lunch and since the answering machine was full, I could never get through to the office to ask. I walked in when I saw them open! They even still have the menu on the wall. Bless the Lord and these sweet souls, they fed me a nice plate of chicken ( baked or fried), greens, Mac and cheese, rice with gravy, a cube of cornbread, a slice of white bread, a dessert ( cake, cookies or ice cream), and slamming fruit punch spritzed! They cook with love and bless others with it. They also have a clothing closet for those in need. I plan to make a donation because of how they serve their local community. I hope others do too.

With a deep history being the congregation of many U.S. presidents, the modern building was dedicated in the 1940s. The church itself has a long history of activism and coming alongside the city's residents in need, a tradition they carry on today. The church was where Lincoln rented a pew and attended service while president. Outside the church is the old hitching post for his horse. Inside are busts and paintings of Lincoln, his actual pew, and a handwritten copy of a bill that helped inspire the Emancipation Proclamation. If you go inside, the staff are happy to show you around.

The first time I brought my friend who was struggling with a drug addiction hoping to introduce him to an environment for spiritual health. The last time I went with my partner. The church as become too political. I am surrounded by politics constantly and for me, church should be a place to escape and to address my relationship with God and my spirit. Even the emails I receive are consistently about political matters. The church seems to have changed from a place that is Jesus focused spirtuality to political activist focused. I really loved this church but as the leadership has changed, the environment has only become political.
