By the time I got there it was hour before it started. I saw the cassette tapes on there worship service and try not to spend all my money. After worship we all when down to the fellowship hall for desert. I was going to Calvary Baptist Church and gone to First Baptist Church on Sunday worship service. I found that Calvary was worshiping like first baptist church years ago. Enjoying the service. I part my time between church and go a part of a member ship. Only thing I can't vote in meeting. Five year ago I join the church. An getting a temp pastor Randy Lee Ashcroft and enjoy his service for one year and left to received the new pastor. Three year later we are looking for a new pastor. Over all the new pip organ. Plus the new parking lot. And the new building next door. How know what next. I still enjoy this church and have many friends. Looking word in coming back to the church

As…read moreI seat down to listen the wonderful teaching from the Pastor about turning life around to Christ, to reconcile, to reconstruct and rekindle the relationship with the Holy One. My heart was touch and I began to smile. It brings back the memory of how the first time I found this Church on Christmas eve 2004. The same excitement and peacefulness I feel today while listening to the message of God through the Pastor sermon with what I feel back then. Of how at that time I feel that God has speaking to me through His servant during the sermon, I experience same way today. God has reveal His love to me through the message I hear today to restore my life and to bring me back closer to Him. It is so good to be back after sometime missing attending the sermon at this Church. It is a good feeling to be in the House of God and to see some familiar faces. The First Baptist Church of Washington DC has done a lot of good deeds for the community around it. This Church has been involved with helping the unfortunate, such as homeless people by providing food and clothing and has provide shelter to them. And the most important thing is every time I come back to this Church, I feel home. I feel I am among my family. I can see their beautiful soul embracing my presence at Church. As I usually do after the sermon, I go mingle with some of the Church member at the fellowship room to have a fun conversation and enjoying my cake and yummy coffee that been poured into those fabulous china tea cups. Those pretty cups, my favorites! :) From time to time, I attend the Church splendid luncheon, as well as attending the classic but fun concert at this Church. And within the next two weeks, on October 24th at 4 pm, Thomas Pandolfi, the classical pianist, Juilliard music school graduate, will held his concert here. And I am planning to attend. :) As much as I enjoy and love a modern mega church, the same feel I have about this Classic and elegant Church. I feel home. Giving me this wonderful feeling, and remind me of this lovely worship song... As for me God came and found me As for me He took home As for me He gave me a family And I never walk alone God is in the house, there is no doubt God is in the house, can't keep Him out As for me and my house, we're gonna to serve the Lord! :)

We love Community dinners--they are an excellent way to bond with a diverse group of people within the community whom you never may have met. We met folks of different ages, ethnicities, talents and even churches. The food was potluch shared by community members, while eating we were treated to lovely piano playing (and riffs) by a member, during dinner the children out together a puzzle game of World counties. After dinner we roasted marshmallows over a huge fire pit and enjoyed s'mores. It's important to note that this church is a generous one, practices what they preach and serves a connector to some of the homeless in the community--a few of whom I was happy to see joined us for the dinner.

Everybody is generally friendly & welcoming here. They don't use musical instruments or have a choir. Everybody sings 'a capella'-style. They have prayers, sing hymns, do announcements, sermons, full-water-immersion baptisms, take communion(bread & juice), and take up a collection. Women aren't allowed to preach to men here. I've never known any LGBT people here, but I don't think they would feel comfortable being "out" at this church. The pews(benches) are cushioned. You can dress up or go casual, nobody will hassle you about it. The sermons are usually boring, or they spend too much time focusing on minutia details of scripture, essentially beating water out of rocks. They interpret the Bible pretty literally and strictly, at least to the extent of not violating state & federal laws. There are Sunday school classes for all age groups, but they are very boring usually. Sometimes the teenager classes are fun when they are run like a discussion group. There's no playground on-site, but it's right behind the new movie theater. There's no daycare. They do VBS(Vacation Bible School) every year and they have 'Ladies' Day' events. During sermons, they also have "Children's Worship/"Primary Preaching" classes targeted at toddlers through about 6th grade. They have a puppet show in the Children's Worship. This is a really small church (200 people) in a really big space (seats 2000). The sermon today was…read moreamazing. Pastor Kasey Jones was inspired and inspiring. With such a small congregation you wouldn't expect the very high caliber of music that was provided. Although this is a very old African-American church, they welcome all comers. Parishioners come from all walks of life - young and old from all ethnic origins can hear great advice about how to best get along in life. The message applies to us all... But again, did I mention how phenomenal the music and the pastor are here?? This might be the best show in town, and you come out of it a better person having participated in it. Whatever led me here today, I'm glad it did. I'll be back. PS: Keeping it real, what led me was the fact that I realized I was walking by a lot of churches to go to church. So I decided to keep my walk short. Church #1 had it's gates closed and I couldn't figure out how to get in. Church #2 was Unitarian. Mom's Unitarian. That's not a Christian church. This was church #3, and their door was open. Now I usually go to a 5pm service downtown as I hate mornings, but today Ray Lewis is in a playoff game at 3, so schedules needed to be adjusted. The point is that this is a great church that just might get me up in the mornings on Sundays. Bible study's at 9:45 in Werner Hall, and the service starts at 11.

The music and liturgy can be said to be tailored for people of color, but really it is for everyone. The issues are relevant from yesterday to today and there are numerous support groups for those who would like to get to know more folk. It is at least as friendly as another non-Catholic church that I have visited and was so surprised at the nonpretentiousness. When the atmosphere allows different groups to help with worshiping such as at the Children's Mass Service, it really expands one's awareness of how committed the parents and community can be, which in turn helps deepen one's faith and love in community. If you are very poor and shy there is also the evening mass which is broadcast online, which is also another ample demonstration of local talent by nonmarginalized women of color. As one person stated, it is the only church where I remember getting more hugs and handshakes than anywhere else. Kudos to the church and all the parishioners who create a hidden gem out of DC. One star deducted for insurance: anytime I post something as terrific, especially in DC, some field operatives might be sent to sow dissent.

The first Sunday I missed due to having an engagement after college football playoffs. But I've been back the last two Sunday's in person and it is the recharge I needed! Thanks to my Yelpies for posting your check-in's at your churches, your dedication allowed to me see this was missing in my life. God has been so good to me! Literally has always had his hands over me. My old cadence was watching sermons on Monday's but to come in and feel the presence of God with others is special! Sunday's it is! Pastor Battle always teaches the Bible and makes you understand it where you can apply the teaching in real life. Highly recommend this down to earth, relatable Pastor! With all the job losses, deaths, chaos in 2025 we need to be more focused on God. Be better people, partners, friends, colleagues, and overall just be better versions of ourselves.
