SDM's trademark 'Do Not Enter' swinging door has been installed to the right of the entrance. This means you gotta go left, fools.

I normally head…read moreinto a concert or sporting event with a handful of items, such as a credit or debit card, my phone, and my car keys. I realized that I needed mints. I saw this Shoppers Drug Mart (SDM). It was perfect to get some. This SDM used to be Friar's Tavern. I grew up knowing that it was the Hard Rock Cafe. It shut down a few years ago. It is now a drug store. It's also a heritage Toronto site. Its location is decent. It's across from both CF Eaton Centre and Yonge-Dundas Square. There is a Green P parking lot under the latter, so you could technically park and casually shop here. This SDM has two floors. It does have an elevator to get you between the floors. Sadly, it was out of commission when I dropped by. If you require an elevator to get you between floors, you are out of luck here, unless it's now fixed. I walked up the stairs. I liked that it had a mini grocery store. I saw fresh produce, salads, and more. I found my mints. I got some peppermint Excel mints. Yay! There was a single human at the cashout area. I ended up using a self-checkout. I only had mints, so the transaction was simple. I paid with a debit card. I had my PC Optimum barcode scanned from my SDM app. Done! I'm glad that I got mints. They came in handy while watching the concert. I didn't really need a drink, so I saved a bit not getting one at Massey Hall and having minty-fresh breath. This SDM is cool. I like the location. The only downside is that the store closes at 9 pm. As a result, you can't get groceries or snacks after a show. (483)

Canadians know what Rexall is all about…read more As ubiquitous as the Maple Leaf, Tim Horton's, or hockey, Rexall has almost 9,000 locations across Canada. In downtown Toronto (with more than 40), it makes it seem like there's one on every block. For Americans, the closest comparison is Walgreen's ... but think how much more you'd like Walgreen's without the rip-off prices on non-sale items. That's Rexall. So with that in mind, what would make the the location at 48 Yonge Street -- which is more officially known as "Store 8197" -- special? Well, let's start with location: The corner of Yonge and Wellington. On my journey, I was at the famed Hotel Victoria ... putting us less than a block from the Rexall. That also puts you in a few blocks from the East Bayfront, ScotiaBank Arena, Berczy Park, Union Station, Sony Centre for the Performing Arts (soon to be Meridian Hall), across the street from the Hockey Hall of Fame, and very very close to about a zillion other things you'll want to do and see in Toronto. Are all Rexall's the same? Pretty-much. Each (or at least most) have an excellent pharmacy for all those good drugs you get with that freeish healthcare Canada gives its lucky citizens. Pleasant service. A whole bunch of candy selections. It's the best place for fellow travelers to pick up those health, hair, and beauty items they forgot at home ... and at actually very reasonable prices. I was gobsmacked to pay $5 ($3.75 US) for a 6-pack of 710mL (24-oz) bottles of Diet Coke ... a great deal, especially in a major metropolitan area. Every day on our trip, we either started or ended our day at the Rexall. And we return to Toronto, we'll be back for more!

Another disappointing thing is they close at 10pm. After the renovations, the interior is a lot bigger and spacious and looking more like a traditional Shoppers. The used to be a lot smaller. They have added 2 self-serve checkouts. I don't know why the outside signage is in black unlike the customary red. They sell lottery tickets here (some Shoppers don't sell lottery tickets).

I think I've calmed down enough since last week to finally write this review…read more I went to the cash out and I had 10 items. After ringing them all through, I watched to see which items would display a sale price -- at Shopper's, the sale prices only appear once the total bill is calculated (so they ring in at full price, and at the end they drop to sale price if on sale). I saw that one of the items didn't go on sale, so I informed the cashier Saada that I didn't want one item. I figured she'd do the simple void, and I could be on my merry way. This is assuming she knew how to void an item. After clicking some random buttons, she said, okay it's done - but I could still see the item listed, and the total bill price hadn't changed. It's still there, I explained, pointing it out to her. It's not there, she told me again, and she was already getting frustrated. 100% sure I was correct (I can add up ten items in my head and could tell it was still in there), I just said, "Ok, let's just see what happens on the final receipt when it comes out," and went to pay -- but at this point Saada decided just to delete ALL the items. "Starting again," she said, and started grabbing items to re-scan them. At this point, a line was forming behind me. Each time she ran in an item, I put it in my reusable bag -- again, we took away that one item I wanted voided, so I just had NINE items -- and then the total was $4 less than last time BECAUSE THAT ITEM WAS MISSING. Upon seeing it wasn't the same total (and still convinced she had voided the other item), Saada reaction was to ACCUSE ME OF STEALING. "Where are you hiding it? Where's the other item? Is it in your hand?" etc etc for about five minutes, grabbing the items out of my bag and counting and recounting....this is the worst customer service I've ever had in my entire life. My decades and decades of life. Time spent in Europe. Times when people didn't even give me service at all. ANY OTHER TIME WAS BETTER THAN THIS. Finally, after this 15 minute-so-far transaction, I just said, NEVER MIND and left the store with nothing. Worst part was I WANTED THOSE NINE ITEMS. The next day I called to speak to a manager. I relayed this story to him. He said, "Okay, I'll talk to her." .... "Have a good day!" and that was it. Never again. This time I mean it!!
