One party store had bobbleheads of famous American TV characters and super heros. Another had multistory wooden dollhouses and fun toys any kid would love. This also houses several live theaters spread out on the second and third floors and a movie theater on the fourth floor. They have a variety of good quality restaurants to choose from (Xi Bistrô, Balada mix). There's a convenient taxi stand in the front of the mall for easy transportation and a parking garage on the top floors. Plus the bus lines run a block away towards PUC.

It's as though shopping is the sideshow here, with plays, movies, a gym, and great restaurants being the main attraction. There are plenty of stores, but for the most part they aren't chains. The stores also don't focus on clothes. Instead, you're likely to find something unique for your house, maybe a gift for a friend, or something completely unexpected. The most unique attractions for me are the theaters and restaurants. Every floor has at least one live-action theater, both for adults and kids. It's common to see costumed princesses or pirates walking around and taking pictures with kids. I haven't personally seen a play there yet, but I have heard good things from friends. The movie theater is unique too. Smaller than the typical theater, it offers more of a feeling of community for those watching the film together. We also saw an advertisement that they will be showing old-time movies with live piano accompaniment in the near future. The restaurants are all top notch. Lunch, supper, ice cream, coffee, chocolate, whatever it is you are looking for, they have a place in Shopping da Gávea that will meet or exceed your expectation. Definitely give this place a visit, just don't expect anything like you've seen before in a mall.

It's like one stop shopping here. Clothing, shoes, refrigerators, housewares, mattresses, barber shop, nail and pedicure, etc. Several international labels like Nike, Zara, Lindt truffles, and Daiso. And Havainas, the Brazilian flip flop store. We did mostly window shopping. Our two little purchases - 1) two Portuguese egg tarts from a small vendor and 2) Lindt truffles by weight. You have the main floors with handfuls of normal stores, but there is one particular corner of the building where you enter, and it's a multitude of stalls and kiosks for a good 3 floors, with any range of whatever you need: screen repairs, cables, phone cases, new merchandise...I first got to know it when I was looking to get my iPod screen fixed, but now place it in my mental filing cabinet for anything I need. If you're getting something repaired and have some time to kill, head downstairs and grab a burger or a beer at any of the variety of other businesses that occupy the building aside from electronics stores. Beauty and spa services, souvenir shops, clothing stores, a cafe and restaurant, and other businesses I might have missed. I only wanted to buy a few bathing suits, and was almost overwhelmed at how many swimwear shops there were. They can be found on every level. Some were selling sets for ~300 Reias, but a few had great mark downs for 70-100 Reias. It's definitely worth it to take time looking through this mall. There is an elevator on each level, but I found the stairs easier to explore the entirety of the building.

Full disclosure, I really had anxiety about the whole bathing suit thing coming from the northern US where I've only ever seen full coverage bottoms at the beach. Based on recommendations from other yelpers (Gabriele J and Mitzy R) I came here and not only did I get 3, that's right 3, bikinis but I'm a convert! I will never go back to my full coverage suits. My fav place was La Ariea on the 7th or 8th floor. They were the only place with bikinis with a "G" bottom. Yes the "P" or "S" weren't going to hold this bumbum. But the place has more than just tons of bathing suit stores, they had plenty of options for workout gear (yes I got several one piece suits to bring back), a store full of sarongs for $R13 (not the 25/30 on the beach) and a great place called Pado de Sol with tons of souvenirs. The prices vary throughout the floors. If you see something you like but don't like the price I'm sure you'll see it on another floor for a different price. Definitely recommend coming here. Note bathrooms are only on floor 12.
