In 1961, the ship was recovered from the seabed, restored, and put on display. This museum charges an admission fee for adults but not for children. I visited this museum one time, and my favorite part was, of course, viewing the Vasa. The ship sat on the bottom floor of the building, and I viewed the ship from different floors. It looked large and beautifully adorned, despite not having its original painted colors. I could still admire its joining planks, cannon holes, and carved sculptures. I also viewed other exhibits such as James Cameron's "Challenging the Deep." The museum also has a restaurant and a gift shop where I purchased a few souvenirs. The Vasa Museum was one of my favorite places to visit in Stockholm, and I recommend that others visit it.

The museum has several levels and well layout and organized. Staff are everywhere and friendly. On top level, there is a restaurant overlook the city. The view is just amazingly breathtaking, service is great. Foods and drinks are also good too. On street level, before you leave the museum, a small but plenty of variety of shops for shopping. There are several exhibitions throughout the year and they're all fantastic. Love this museum.

The museum has some sort of huge tubes outside and kids were zooming down the tubs having a fabulous time. We are a really delicious lunch in the museum cafe and I recommend it. I had a wonderful vegetarian lunch that was delicious and my husband had a salad with some really good smoked salmon. A lovely place to look at art and have lunch.

When we visited last week, I was really blown away by an exhibit made up of works from their permanent collection: "Pink Sails: Swedish Modernism in the Moderna Museet Collection." I wasn't familiar with too many Swedish artists, so it was a pleasure to explore this exhibit and experience art that was new to me! The museum is open late (until 8pm on Tuesdays and Fridays), which was great for us - it let us tag on a visit to the museum at the end of a full day of touristing around Gamla Stan. The museum is gorgeous, very modern, with a great gift shop, cafe, and restaurant. A really beautiful museum and well worth visiting if you're interested in modern and contemporary art.

It is one of Europe's oldest museums, dating back to 1792 (though this building did not house the collections until 1866). Tickets to the permanent collections are free. When I visited, the temporary exhibit was not something that appealed so I did not purchase a ticket for that one. Most of the paintings are Swedish artists I have never heard of but here and there were some names that I did recognize. Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet and Paul Cézanne. There is a large Asian exhibit, a display of jewelry (brooches, bracelets and rings), pocketwatches, and much more. Expect two hours at minimum, a half day if you truly want to see everything. The first floor is set up as a nice house (plenty of lace, not the everyday fisherman's life). The glass fishes brandished by the guide are in the shape of the local herring. We spent quite a good time looking through the Viking exhibit. She had loaned me a Viking book to read during my stay which I did during my down time. With the reading and the visiting, we had a great week of discovery! We spent so much time just in the Viking exhibit this day, that we ran out of time to visit the rest of the museum. Put this on your list of MUST DO!... along with a visit to the Viking Island Birka by ferry from Stockholm... see my previous reviews...

Currently, admission is free for children and 180 SEK per adult. My husband and I visited this museum one time. We walked through an exhibition of Swedish history from the 1100s through the 1900s. I learned about Sweden becoming Christian, about the monarchy of Gustav Vasa, and much more. Then we viewed the Gold Room, which showcased gold collars from the Migration Period, silver pendants from the Viking Age, and reliquaries from the Middle Ages. Overall, I think that this museum is worth visiting if you want to learn about Swedish history.

If there were a Nobel Prize for effective merchandising and displaying history, this museum would not even be in the running.

Construction took twelve years, from 1911 to 1923. Nearly eight million dark red bricks were used. The Blue Room was supposed to be covered with blue marble, but the designer liked the bricks so much, the marble brick facade was never installed. The staircase to the organ and the balconies are made from a beautiful green marble from Sweden. The floor is a light grey limestone, and the columns are made from a red and green marble from Sweden The Golden Room has walls that are covered with more than 18 million pieces of gold and glass mosaic, created by the artist Einar Forseth. The mosaics contain approximately 18 kilograms (40 lbs) of 23.5-carat gold leaf. As of today, that's 2.25 million US dollars worth of gold. The mosaics represent the history of Sweden, as well as Swedish values. It's hard to describe what this banquet room for the Nobel Prize winners look like, so I recommend viewing the photos I've attached, or better yet, go to the City Hall's website and view this movie: https://stadshuset.stockholm/stadshuset-play/stadshusets-salar-en-digital-visning-av-stadshuset/. It's in Swedish, but you'll get the idea. A visit to a City Hall sounds boring, and many times it is. However, this is WELL worth a visit, when you are in Stockholm. I promise you will be impressed.

We reserved a…read moretour of the interior and purchased tickets that allow us to climb up to the top of the tower for the views. But the architecture of city hall? Incredible. Completed in 1923, it seems so much older. And each space in City Hall is so different, with different architectural styles, inspirations, and decor. This is the kind of building you buy books about. A 45-minute tour just isn't long enough! If they had a two hour tour, I'd have taken it. They release the tickets either the week of or the week before, but they still fill out. The tour groups are large, which limits the spaces you can see, but I'm still so glad we were able to get tickets for a tour of this amazing building! You learn about the building, the architect, the building's connection to the Nobel Prize...! And it's just incredibly stunning, too. One of the highlights of our time in Stockholm.
