Our kids started jiu jitsu at Silanoe earlier this year, and they absolutely love it. They attend classes 1-2 times a week and look forward to every class. The coaches Ivan and Lisa are amazing - incredibly kind, patient, and so good at working with young kids. They create such a positive, encouraging environment that our girls have grown more confident each week. Their front desk, Maria, is also fantastic. She's knowledgeable and super thorough in answering questions. One of the best part is that she often jumps into class to interact with the kids and participates in activities. Before joining Silanoe, I had tried out 3 other gyms and while those other gyms were good, Silanoe really stood out because EVERYONE here is super awesome. From the office manager to all the different coaches and even to the other students, everyone cares about your learning. First off, the coaches - I can't say enough good things about the coaches here. When I had tried the other gyms, their coaches would throw out terminology as if everyone automatically knew what they were talking about. And then they would proceed to show the moves and simply tell you what to do. The coaches at Silanoe take the time to explain the terminology as well as WHY you should do each move the way they're taught so that you're not only learning the moves, you're also understanding them. They are also extremely patient so I never feel hesitant to ask questions. Next up we have the office manager. I always feel welcomed when I walk into the office because I'm always greeted with a lovely smile and all my questions are always answered with that same smile. When I have questions and am not on location, I simply send an email and I'd get a response almost immediately. I truly feel taken care of. Then there's the other students, which makes up a large part of the overall experience. All of the students here are friendly and very approachable and nobody here has an ego. The students treat each other with much respect and nobody is out to prove anything. We are all here for each others' learning and we have fun. Finally, there's professor Gino himself. Professor Gino is the nicest and most down to earth instructor you'll ever meet. You can tell he truly cares about the students and community he has built. The best decision I've ever made was enrolling my 7 year old son here as he's very high strung. In 2020, my 7 y.o. daughter participated in Park Rec Karate and it was a good introduction into martial arts, then COVID happened. In 2021, I wanted to put my 9 y.o. daughter into a formal type of martial arts - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but was concerned it might be abit much or too early for her. I drove by Silanoe Martial Arts many times. The white/black and clean interior drew me in and I decided to bring my daughter in for a free trial that they offered. I like what I saw and how they interacted with the students, boys and girls between 8 and 11 y.o. Professor Gino who is a black belt, mentors his students with a soft spoken voice without yelling or barking commands. He is an effective communicator and I see how his students listen. He even incorporates games/exercises to build up their cardio and muscle memory. I like how Professor Gino and the coaches emphasize discipline and end the session with some form of life lessons and how they can approve. Silanoe & the coaches provide a safe learning environment for kids of all ages. In the 2 1/2 years, I've seen the student attendance have grown for the kids, teens, as well as the adults. They're even added Muy Thai which I currently have my daughter in as well. My daughter recently entered her first DREAM Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition last March. Where she won 2 and lost 2 matches, but seeing her compete against some seasoned competitors made me super proud. She put everything she learned in 2 years all together. I've been coming here for about ~6 months now. I've had no prior training, and this the first gym I've been to. I have been at Silanoe Martial Arts since 2023. I've done trials at other academies around the area, and hands down this is the best place to be for learning self-defense and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Whether you are a competitor or recreationalist, the curriculum here provides a solid foundation for both groups of people. You will be learning the fundamentals of BJJ, while staying up to date with the current modern day trends. Both Gi and No-Gi classes are offered here. I joined Silanoe 3 years ago as a blue belt and Professor Gino awarded my purple belt two years later. This review only covers the intermediate/advanced BJJ classes, because I do not go to the fundamental or muay thai classes. What I LOVE about Silanoe and are very important to what I look for in a BJJ gym: * Classes are run in a professional manner. Classes start and end on time. * The Professor is focused on teaching or coaching and not on his phone on Instragram. There is zero politics/religion talk in class. * Laid back vibe. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. * Open to hobbyists and competitors. * Safe (no spaz) In short I'm a hobbyist who goes to the gym for jiujitsu. I have a full-time job and kids at home. So I need the classes to run on time and then come back home safe. I have not seen a single major injury in my three years there. What I love but are not as important as list above: * Easy parking. I live and train jiu-jitsu at Next Level Martial Arts (Zenith) in Tigard, Oregon area, but grew up down in LA. Went to 9th grade at Alhambra High...so I still visit family back home. Over the years, I've done several drop ins at Silanoe. I reached out ahead of time and was pleasantly surprised (the first time) by the quick response and the warm welcome. I started here about 1.5 years ago because of my interest in the Muay Thai classes mainly. I have practiced BJJ before for a short period of time. I truly believe culture and environment are taught from the top down. My son and I have been training here at Silanoe Martial Arts and are excited about our transition. From my experience, I feel most gyms are categorized as competition gyms or hobbyist gyms, and often difficult to find a gym that can balance both well. We believe we have found a gym that has the ideal balance. My son wants to compete (winning Gold and Bronze in his tournament this month), while I, on the other hand, do it for cardio and well-being. Perhaps my aspirations to compete will come back again someday. I have trained at other gyms and found that while the quality may exist, the quantity of time with your professor is almost obsolete. What I mean by that is, at most gyms, the professors are not as accessible or willing to give their time unless it's your trial class. However, Professors at Silanoe are eager to sit around to chat with you, coach your tournaments, review your matches, and be available when you are stuck in a move and looking for an answer to the problem. More often than not, I have the professors suggesting an alternative to an action I had done incorrectly before I even asked. The team and the members of the gym are immediately welcoming of all members. What I appreciate the most is that everyone fist bumps and greets each other and introduces themselves, and this practice is done daily. It helped an introverted individual like me to become quickly acquainted with everyone. The instruction combines traditional, modern, pressure, and mobility types of game are taught, including different types of guards, which I appreciate. I believe Silanoe Martial Arts has both quality instruction and genuine care for the well-being of the students. As someone who was interested in Brazilian jiu jitsu but never really mustered the courage (or time) to join a gym, I finally gave it a shot when I joined for a trial class at Silanoe Martial Arts. There, I was welcomed by a tight-knit small-gym atmosphere where I could really feel that there was a sense of community. Professor Gino knows everyone by name; exudes positive, charismatic energy; and his attention to detail when explaining techniques and concepts exemplifies his knowledge and passion for the art of BJJ. Now having joined, I know that this culture persists throughout its members too: many of my training partners have been friendly, supportive, and also conscientious of safety. I joined at 24 years old with little grappling experience, and training BJJ with Professors Gino and Paul in the adult fundamentals and all-levels classes has been a great mental break (and workout!) from my irregular work schedule as a graduate student in science. I believe they encourage a good balance between the fundamental and competitive aspects of BJJ, which I enjoy and keeps me coming back. The gym has also been a great match for me because of its reasonable pricing, class schedule, and cleanliness. This isn't even mentioning the muay thai classes that I still haven't taken advantage of! I joined this gym back in June to try out Muay Thai. They do offer a trial class for Muay Thai and BJJ, professor Gino will let you borrow the necessary protective equipment during this time. Bring your own mouth guard. My experience is primarily based on the Muay Thai classes although I have taken a few BJJ beginner fundamentals classes. Mon/Weds classes (7-8pm) with Coach Priscilla are challenging: high intensity warm ups, jump rope, punch/kick drills. You will get paired up with another classmate for the drills. She will walk around and provide tips for your form and movements. Tues/Thurs classes (6-7) with Coach John focuses more on drills, you do a quick warm up beforehand. He will walk around and provide tips as well. Sparring might be offered for these classes, usually towards the end of the class. If it's your first day and you feel like you need more experience before you spar I think it's fair to remind your instructor at that time. You don't want to hurt your partner or have them hurt you by accident. If you're just starting out you may be paired up with a more experienced person in class who will help you out during drills and sparring. And if you get super tired on your first couple of days just try your best. I was super out of shape when I first started but I feel that my cardio has gotten better and I'm more confident in what I've learned. BJJ fundamentals classes on Mon/Tues is fun! It can seem like a lot of information at first (the movements and techniques) but give it some time and you will understand. Overall, a cool and fun place to learn. Started with no experience, little over half a year into training now and honestly the best investment I've made for my health & wellness. First off, the Covid protocols from day 1 have been enforced from the strictest guidelines (training outside in the parking lot, mandatory temperature checks, hand sanitizing, and mask on at all times) to current guidelines. Most of the students here are fully vaccinated and STILL wear mask as advised. Second, the cleanliness of the academy is grade A. Mats are swept and sanitized daily. Bathrooms cleaned daily. Floors and chairs cleaned daily. Also proper hygiene etiquette for the students is not only written on the board with steps but also highly encouraged. Muay Thai/Kickboxing classes: healthy mix of beginners to advanced students. Not only is the coach constantly walking around to correct technique and form but beginners are encouraged to pair with someone more advanced so they are properly learning without getting hurt by another beginner. Open and honest line of communication between sparring partners are also highly encouraged to prevent injury. Proper gloves, shin guards, and mouth guards are also highly recommended. Jiu-Jitsu classes: Professor Gino's ability to teach, explain, give scenarios, and breakdown BJJ and grappling is next level. If you don't understand, he will find a way to teach you. Coach Chris with the kids class not only instills respect and the ability to listen as a student but also keeps a good rapport and encourages them. Bottom line, this academy has became my second home. Every student, coach, professor, here is only trying to make each other better, on and off the mats. It's my first time engaging in any sort of martial arts and BJJ/Muay Thai can be quite intimidating...especially as a girl when youre rolling around on the floor with the guys. I have been training at this gym for the past 8 months and have had the pleasure to meet people from all walks of life. I've also had the privilege of being taught by a highly knowledgeable teacher, Professor Gino, who is attentive to each student and is always there to answer your questions. I am always excited to come train here and it makes me wish I stopped overthinking about going and just started sooner! (This was my first time doing anything martial arts related) So if you're reading this and you're debating, just do it, even if it's for a day, just come check out what this gym is all about! I am incredibly grateful for the people I have met at this gym; they are honestly some of the kindest and most patient people I have ever encountered, which helped ease my fear of not knowing a technique or move. As a woman as well, I was frightened that I might be walking into a very macho gym but I never got that vibe and the ratio of women to male is fairly leveled, especially for it being a male-dominated sport.
